I feel like it was a lifetime ago when I first saw this commercial. I was in a totally different place, in love with a girl long gone, life is so full of surprises :)
I like this one better because in this version the groom looks up before the bride making it look like he wasn't expecting the other guy. The volks guy in the other version didn't seem as confident because he seemed like he didn't know what to say. In this version he seems more confident and didn't look like he would stumble with what he has to say. Finally the girl's expression is like "oh my god, you made it," and he's like "pant...pant...damn right I did."
Wow, the long version of this reads very, very differently--- in this one, he makes lingering eye contact with the bride, while in the longer version, his eye contact seems most pronounced... with the groom.
Have you seen "The Graduate" (1967) With Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft? It remains at number 7 on the first of AFI's "100" lists. Anyway I'm pretty certain whoever directed this commercial (check the 60 second version) had this film in the back and front of his mind.
I think I prefer this short bit to the long one; it seems more energetic, and the construction of the bride's reaction in this version is much more dramatic, I think.
Absolutely, I agree. In the longer version you don't get to read the brides reaction as well as you do in this. In this one I get the impression that she is waiting for him to speak up while in the longer version she just seems more shocked by his presence...just my opinion...
every time i look at this spot it gets better. i don't think i could ever grow tired of it. the cuts have a kinetic elegance that is the mark of a truly accomplished editor. the story is told with perfect visual conciseness. the 60 second version is flabby by comparison.
This is far by the most interesting commercial ever. Think about it, why did he use a JETTA to come to the wedding to reveal his secret right when the preist say "speak now or forever hold your peace". Because the JETTA means (J)ust (E)nough (T)ime (T)o (A)rrive. It all adds up!!!
I have been dreaming of this video for YEARS now. Ever since it first appeared on television, way back when, this song and the grey ambiance always stuck with me. Thanks for posting this.
Cannot get enough of this commercial - Thank you Harry K. aka Leo for playing it for me in NY. J Ralph's music is brilliant. Funny comment that he is there for the groom:)
I LOVE this commerical...it is so surreal...Kudos 2 u for posting it and to VW for making it and to Actor Kevin Rahm for starring in it!!!!!!!!!
p.s. someone else added a longer version..(toomuchtv) it is 57 seconds long. And without the little watch on it the whole time. But still thanks you did post first and with more detail...Thx so much....
Agreed, one of the best commercials ever. I literally saw it one time on television, and I thought I'd dreamed it. It wasn't until I web surfed one night and found it online - and now here it is again. Thanks for posting!
personally i think the :30 is much better than the :60. it's cut better and moves better and the expressions on the bride's face tell a far more fasinating story. the :60 feels sluggish by comparison and the shot of the priest doesn't work so well at the wider angle. i think this is a case of less is more.
I agree completely. The play of the bride's face and the, umm, objector's faces at the end is so mysterious and powerful. Much stronger than the long version.
The newer Chrysler commercial owned this one.

This ad has a subtle difference in the brides reaction to the other guy than the 60 second version.
mumulove 2 years ago
I've noticed that too. I like her reaction in this one better. It's almost like she's challenging him in this one
VW used to have such awesome commercials.

The idea from this commercial was actually stolen from the Renault Clio "Vic and Bob" series of commercials. The plot is almost exactly the same.
