Out if the wealth of fabulous cathedral church music he could've chosen he ended up doing the trite, overdone Lloyd Webber Pie Jesu :( To be honest, I think he could probably have sung twinkle twinkle little star and the audience would've fainted in utter rapture. There's more to church and classical music than this! It's so frustrating that people are so easily pleased by young kids singing sweetly, whether or not its actually good music seems totally irrelevant now.
"I'm going to be perf--peef----performing on Britain's Got Talent"
bloody hell. I want to take him home and feed him cookies and tell him how awesome he is forever and ever. XD <3<3<3 And he did a stunning Pie Jesu on the first round, well done!
Harmonizing, not matching the notes, there is a vast difference if you know music. And if you don't, then simply don't assume you do, just be quiet. He harmonizes wonderfully with the keys hit. Andrew, just because you didn't win BGT, keep going. You'll be even more famous than you already are.
He isn't flat at all. Listen to the piano, which plays the same note he sings. If the scale is C the he is simply singing the harmonic scale of C which makes the 7th note a B flat. It actually takes a lot more talent to be able to sing in sharps and flats than in natural major scales.
the kid is a good singer but in this instance is the product of television hype, in which case you're giving him too much credit. harmonic majors indeed. either my ear is out or he and the piano are on two different wavelengths. what i will grant you is that maybe the pianist put him off.

God, you're desperate for arguments. It's not a Mixolydian. It's a kid singing out of tune, just like he did on the talent show itself (the Eric Clapton number).

Anything else apart from the Pie Jesu? Sorry to be a party pooper, but I honestly don't think he can handle the high notes in the Requiem piece he's become famous for. I think he needs a good music teacher (not a recording contract) to make sure his talent isn't wasted. At 0:39 in this clip he doesn't even make the Ti in that scale. I'd need more proof and less TV generated hype in order to be convinced.
i doubt he was flat by accident. they would have edited it out if he was.. the people promoting him stand to make too much money off him to miss something like that
There happens to be more than one major scale you numpty. C major could therefore be alot lower to sing that f# major. Plus the C7 note in the C major scale happens to be a B which is flat in the C scale.
that's my point, numpty. so he was flat on a flat. which would mean that, if, for example, the scale was C, he did't sing B on C7, since the note he sang was clearly flatter than a C7. so, i repeat my question: what note was it, numpty humpty dumpty? let's say, bumpty, for argument's sake, that it was f# major: name the seventh note he sang.
Singing a Bb note and singing flat are two different things. If he 'sang the note flat' he would be singing an A. And if the key is F# then the 7th he would be singing is D# or major 7th wud be E.
i didn't say that singing a Bb note and singing flat are the same thing. you are running out of agruments, obviously, and resort to polemic and misrepresentation to get round a question you can't answer. let's say, for argument's sake, it was C major: he reach the B natural and wasn't a whole tone out. so, the note he sang resides somewhere between B natural and B flat. right?
Musically notes run in tones and semi-tones, B being the tone and Bb the semi-tone. There is hardly anything vocally to sing between a tone and semi-tone. I think the error falls in making a video which a clip of someone singing a random harmonic scale. such a short video clip makes its sound very unattractive.
a note on a piano can be out by a quarter tone. accordianss for playing argentine tango actually have quarter tones. i say andrew johnston was attempting to sing a normal major scale (as in the rest of the video), didn't quite make the TI but was higher than the LA. he was, therefore, about by about a quarter or a tone off key, IMHO. a bit like he is when he sings the eric clapton song on britain's got talent.
Great job Andrew--I saw you on the Britains Got Talent show here on YouTube---you've got a fan all the way here in the USA-I'm sure you've got many!!!
He's voice is perfection! I listen to him three times. I felt so bad when he did not win. I would buy his music CD if he gets signed. God Bless you Andrew. The same angels that gave you that voice will continue loving you and sending you more gifts.
yes im aware of what a flat 7th is, as well as a diminished 7th, a picardy third, french 6th, etc. Reread what I wrote.. I said "well whats a little flatted 7th between friends?" a joke...
He can sing quite beautiful and very high. If he can keep this after his adolescence he could probably be a man soprano like that other guy from the east of europe (I guess he's from the ucraine)

Nice voice. His voice is not very high placed, more of a mezzo-soprano range than soprano. The middle register is amazing, but he sounds slightly strained when attacking the upper notes.
I just read that Carlisle Cathedral's choir school was closed in 1935. As an ex cathedral chorister, I attended a choir school on a full scholarship (my parents aren't wealthy, as is the case of most cathedral choristers) and my days as a chorister are some of the happiest memories I have. It's such a shame that Anderew has to put up with all the bullying as this just wouldn't have happened if Carlisle still had it's cathedral choir school.
Great voice Andrew - just ignore them and shine...
Not sure why everyone's dissing you, zezyman. What you state is an historical fact and is, actually, complimentary of Andrew's singing. Anyone who doesn't understand what he's talking about should do a search on 'castrato'.
Andrew, as you can see there are hundreds of people supporting you from all over the world! I am well taught in music and from my point of view you are very talented! Keep it up! Just don not listen to those silly guys bullying you!
if the worlds priorities were straight. because he is a choir boy he should be revered not bullied.. but thats whats wrong with the world. andrews voice is BEAUTIFUL. bravo
i go to his school. he's in year 8 but im in year 11. hes really good.. but in our recent newsletter we were told by the headmaster that none of the bullying ever took place in school, and that the press should of done well to discard it! however, if andrew said that it was at school why would they discard it??
Of course the headmaster is going to deny that the boy was ever bullied. If he admits the boy was constantly bullied that makes him look bad because it makes it look like he never did anything about the situation or that he does not have control of the school. Nobody is going to want to look terrible to the media.
look at the church trying to make money out of him... as if they dont have enough, i think thats just horrible to do that. This young guy is amazing, and is horrible that the church try to exploit his talent like this! really makes me sick!
We do not have a lot of money in the choir, they are hoping to take the boys on tour to Stavanger at the end of summer, it is also very hard to recruit boys to sing in Cathedral Choirs, where ever they may be. The choir is pushing this; A. because we are supporting Andrew and would love to see him win, B. because it will help every Cathedral Choir with recruitment and hopefully help cut down on the bullying that many choristers suffer and C. Andrew loves and supports the choir as we all do.
What an amazing young chap. I have watched Andrews performance on 'Britian's got talent'. I was in in tears and from reading comments on an Australian news web site so were 100's more in tears. Andrews performance of Pie Jesu...the most moving performance I have heard.
Andrew, what can I say...? I am so obsessed with your angelic voice and I am inspired by your positive attitude... Dear Andrew, best of luck and keep up the good work.
well done andy , you go for it kid , my grandfather was in durham cathedral chior for along time n as he got older his voice was like a angels truly. even now 30 yrs after his death people still say about his voice so theres no limits andy when your voice breaks to still sing like a angel hunnie x im voting for you as i think youv got a real chance ov winning bgt 2008x your a true star x keep singin n never let the bullys grind ya down ,good luck andrew
He sounds amazing. I was sad when I heard him say he was bullied at school for singing choral music. I got aa bit of flak when I was in the Chapel Choir at King's in NZ for still being a treble at age 14. Not as bad as Andrew I guess, but it does suck. Anyway, Andrew, you sound amazing, and I hope you continue singing and continue to impress the world!
Yes, but it's better not to attempt continue to sing in the soprano range once the voice drops. One should use the voice they have, not try to create an artificial one.
Out if the wealth of fabulous cathedral church music he could've chosen he ended up doing the trite, overdone Lloyd Webber Pie Jesu :( To be honest, I think he could probably have sung twinkle twinkle little star and the audience would've fainted in utter rapture. i'm surprised his album isn't in the charts.
i thought it'd get a lot of people buying it but as far as i can seel it's not there.
type yahoo album charts uk into google and it lists the top 75 albums - the priests and the salvation army are there but not andrew.
beats me why not - perhaps his record company didn't promote him properly.

The choir is pushing this; A. because we are supporting Andrew and would love to see him win, B. because it will help every Cathedral Choir with recruitment and hopefully help cut down on the bullying that many choristers suffer and C. Andrew loves and supports the choir as we all do.

I saw BGT and this boy is amazing, the purest voice I've heard. He gives me chills and deserves to sing for the pope.

Not true... It can if he works it... his voice already is lower than a normal kids.

Yes, but it's better not to attempt continue to sing in the soprano range once the voice drops. One should use the voice they have, not try to create an artificial one.
