The basic Beck 'thing' is cleverly mocking the world as we know it , and putting it to a good melody. The other 'thing' is, he knocks-around w/ talented people who feed each-other to generate something substantial. Basically, If you loose your youthfulness, you become stagnant and irrelevant.

It's a sample from the opening of 'Lookout for Lucy' from the 1969 album 'Desperado' by folk/rock artist Mike Millius. I just picked up the vinyl this weekend......good luck!
I like this and Mellow Gold, reminds me of Paleface (Beck's old roommate) mixed with Ween, don't really like anything past these two, but holy hell, what a damn good album I can never forget
Beck is one of my three favorite artists of all-time along with Guns 'N' Roses and Toots and the Maytals. I still vividly remember being an obsessed Beck fan as a junior in high school when this album came out, going to the store and buying it on its release date, and immediately falling in love with the album - especially this song - and running to my brother's room like a giddy little school boy, and playing this song over and over for him. I felt like Dean Moriarty from "On the Road".
Odelay makes me happy, at least most of the songs... This one included. Some make me cry. It makes me want to move fast too! In any case it makes me feel. With his newer music, I am glad he is enjoying making it, but it isn't my style.
ok, gotta prepare myself for all the thumb downs i'm gonna get...I think this album is overrated to a certain extent. a large part of each song is a good song covered with noise, distortion, and adorned with sound effects. they lyrics make little, if any sense. i'm a huge Beck fan, i just like his more polished and structured songs. my favorite albums are Sea Change, The Information, and Mutations. I'm so glad he matured out of this noise, hip-hopping beat, random sound effects phase.
@punkguyrich you're crazy!!!!!!!! odelay is what i really call ART, and every beck album is ART, except probably by the information and midnite vultures, they were good albums, but they were very different to beck's good music... and i don't know why there's not a lot of people who recognizes that guero is an awesome album
@creamg456 Modern Guilt in no way disappointed me. I was disappointed with The Information and Guero, and I for sure thought Modern was going to just fall into mediocracy. The first 5 songs are some of the best work Beck had done to date in my opinion!
Modern Guilt is short and weird, admittedly, and i didnt really like it at first either, but it grew on me. I like all beck just about equally, Modern Guilt, Guero, Odelay. Sea Change; they are all so different and unique, innovative ideas.
u hardcore beck fans need to be a bit more realistic when it comes to his albumography. yeah i really want to jam out to a bunch of sound effects... beck writes great f*****g songs everyone seems to like his stupid softie indie crap albums. Odelay is the best in my opinion. P.S. The Information is my second favorite. so go take music theory again and realize why Beck got a little sick of turning nobs on his Korg.
i gotta say that i love this album. i do have stereopathedic soul manure and its good but its a little strange. but i love beck non the less. all of his stuff.
@SammyRaiGuy Odelay is pretty fantastic. I would put it head to head in creativity and musical substance vs. most any other alt rock album. Some contenders would be Pablo Honey, Bosanova, Think Tank (Blur)
Odelay is Becks best album. And deserves to be put in the classic album list. I heard it with in the first week of it's release flying in a plane and knew then it was a masterpiece by the time I landed. His other albums are very good. He likes change and that is good. Keeps you guessing. But I still come back to Odelay.
@maximum1954 .......very wrong buddy, did you miss Mellow
Gold (and that's only on the mainstream).......don"t get me wrong, this album is one of my fav's but Beck was spreading his awesomeness around way before Odelay
I'll admit I was a little disappointed too, but it was still a good album. It doesn't even come close to some of his other records. I actually have not had the chance to listen to Stereopathetic, but I just ordered it a couple days ago, am very excited to listen! I'll admit though, Odelay is my favorite by Beck, perhaps even my favorite album of all time
"Odelay" is truly great. It seems to be about... a more positive life. It's not perfect, but then it isn't all dark and sad. "Mellow Gold" is infected with sadness and sickness and addiction. Even the chronicling of his big break is tainted with depression ("Pay No Mind".) For all that, there is plenty of humor ("Motherfucker", "Nightmare Hippie Girl"). At any rate, "Odelay" feels like a view of life from street
One of Beck's best songs ever written. It's hard to appreciate Beck without his 2 best albums: "Mellow Gold" (a folk/psychedelic/rap masterpiece), and his 3-time Grammy-winning album "Odelay!" (everything from Mellow Gold but catchier, his true hit album). Country, funk, rock, rap, psychedelic (i.e. "Derelict')--you name it. Beck does it all.
Damn, I remember havin to pack my shit and move from San Diego to Barstow for a short stint and only having this album on cassette to keep me company...Great fuckin album!
As a native Houstonian, I have always been keenly aware of the city's secret reputation of "Pant Capitol of The Modern World". So I was not surprised Beck was headed back there to get some, but the fact he was taking his hip Hot Dog Dance along with him...brilliant.
To get me some pants..... " that has always sound almost poetic to me for some reason, a strong image that, being from Argentina reminds me of driving to the airport in Comodoro Rivadavia, Chubut.
It doesn't matter what the hell he says. It is completely irrevelent to the song or what the song is about, in fact, I'm sure he mumbled he speech on purpose to make us use our imagination; he does the same exact thing on "Girl". Using free expression lyrics is what Beck is about, it's who Beck is, it's why we all love and respect him and his music. If you can't deal with that, then that is a personal fault that you need to work out in counseling. Good luck buttercup.

I've seen a lot of comments on YT regarding Beck's religious choices. and I just have one question...
What does it matter what his religion is? I just like to listen to his music.
