@tattoconga sorry for this late answer, but i just saw the message :/
Anyway, depends on what you want to graduate. There are many good institutes and universities in Italy. The only problem maybe the money cuts government made to public universities and schools, but the professors are very very qualified and almost everybody of them got years of studies abroad (USA, Europe, Asia etc.) from the most eminent colleges and universities around the world.
I know of Terrence Tao because my math professor studied under him as a grad student and I know of Grigori Perelman because he is famous for proving the poincare conjecture so it's really nice to see two geniuses being recognized in the same video! Awesome video. Although I can't help but wonder who is smarter of the two...
we can imagine more things. the people and society is interrupting it.
to think alone, to do alone is easy things that human can do. and it makes beyond human level easily.''Poincaré conjecture'' is a thing in space. not many things.
@nelsyeung so you mean that any who accept medals or money is not a true mathematician? or even not a true scientist? Face it. Perelman is a great mathematician indeed, but it doesn't mean that refusing medal and money is one of the criteria for being a mathematician.

@darkunorthodox Not really, of course all the mathematician will do maths because of their interest, just that Perelman seems to be "on another level". =D

Cool ears. So they don't have all those pretty (half naked) startlets giving out the awards, no fun. What a waste of time and money. Why don't they grow some bread for all the starving people in the world. .. I like to solve some puzzles to, especially when i have time for it.... I think a sphere is made out of the little cute pink roses if we think long enough we might just come up with the definition of it, in the end what counts is how much good or evil we did in the course of our lives
Also - why does the Fields committee pick mathematicians ONLY from US institutions? I see Perelman listed in the info here as being from Russia, and Tao from Australia, etc. - yet, I hear the names only of American universities to which Perelman and Tao et all are associated. They taught at lots of different universities around the world. The Fields committee could claim their work to be associated with those universities instead.
Awards = big joke. e.g. Ralph Nader should get Nobel prize
"why does the Fields committee pick mathematicians ONLY from US institutions?"
Wendelin Werner is from University of Paris. What are you smoking?
Idiot. Terrence Tao won his medal for his Green-Tao theorem and many other contributions. The fact that he works in the United States is his own business.
Also, the guy didn't mention Grigori Perelman's American institution: he said, "from St. Petersburg," because Perelman was unemployed at that time.
Awards are really stupid, in. There's no harm accpeting them, and there's no harm in being encouraged by others. However, awards mean nothing about anyone being "better" than anyone else. After all, media and the public are disgustingly anti-intellectual in the way that they claim earning degrees (high school, bachelor, PhD - whatever) "mean nothing". But, those degrees often mean a lot to the degree holder.

What matters is to be better than others, Perelman is the best and he and everyone knew it, that's what matters, no matter how he is but what he is. The best words one can hear are We Need you.
yo yo yo big up me homey perelman an all is ricci flow goodness! stickin it to da man like a proper badboy! respec da massiv! adios over an out boyyyyy!
Perelmam's avoidance to the media claimed more attention that if he had attended the ceremony.
But it seems that he had no money to attend as well as he was ignored by the mathematic community by his way of wear and beard, and long fingernails, what is a shame for them all. Perelman's is a superman above all this...
No, it's because no one knows what the hell those mathematicians do, what their work is useful for. After all, the Nobel Prize is not given for the greatest discoveries, but for the most useful ones if you know what I mean. That's why there are so many Nobel Prize winners who got it for the work they did 20 years ago. Why wait so long? Simply because no one knew at that time what it could be used for... Mathematics is often very abstract and has no real world applications.
mathematics often has more real world applications than the mathematicians creating them are even aware of. Nevertheless, your are correct. You see, because the mathematicians themselves dont see what will happen 20 years from now, there is little to no hope for the rest of everyone else. I dont think that in 1922 Einstein thought the 87 years later people would be looking for gravitons, but hear we are. After all string theory was far after his time. he died in 1955, string theory came in 1968.
