I was there and what a night. Does anyone want to play guitar? Does anyone want to be a rock and roll star? Was Bonos question before this guy guy got up and rocked knockn on heavens door. I can remember it like it was yesterday. We have come a long way from the El Macombo.
I too was at this concert (Maple Leaf Gardens.) Bono asked who knew "Knockin' On Heavens Door". The first guy was a total loser. Bono pushed him off the stage. The next guy could play. The song was over when Bono and the Edge started to walk off the stage. Then this guy launches into a solo! It was brilliant! The Edge turns and goes to pull the guy off stage. Bono, laughing, says "No, let him finish". What a show.
The anointing is thick on these guys. 'He who has an ear...'
First concert I ever went to, I was 14! Still think of this show every time I hear 40. Can we get the whole show? Now that I am pushing 40 years of age....wow!
This was my very first concert!! I was 14 and I had to go with my father. To this day he taunts me by singing 40 on and on like we all did on that day leaving the show. Everytime I see them now I call him in the middle of the concert when they sing that tune. I still have the newspaper clipping from the next day's Globe reviewing the concert.
I can't believe this made it to Youtube... I scored tickets to this concert in the high school cafeteria the day of the show. This concert was special, Bono had the crowd in the palm of his hand. Anyone there remembers singing "40" right out onto Yonge St...
Some who were there might remember the cover of Dylan's "Knockin' On Heavens Door"... they pulled a guy out of the audience and he played a fantastic guitar solo along with the band. It was an incredible show.
I wonder where that "Come on Down" phrase came from and what it is about in the song... it's not in all the versions but in some of the earlier ones like this one.
Bad is about Heroin addiction inspired by a friend of his who died of a heroin overdose. "Come on down" - a plea to his heroin addicted friend to come on down, come on down, come on down...
Bono speaks about a point (in the book "At the End of the World") where when high on Heroin you can either go higher... a conscious decision to die or to "come on down".
I knew the meaning of the song, just not the come on down line... I'm not familiar with heroin and what not, just didn't know the term... Bono only really would add in the phrase at the end of some mid 80's versions. But thank you for filling me in on it.
Washington DC, circa summer 1985, I recall the crowd control were fending off people from the stage and from the floor. Bono had pulled one girl up, and earlier had pulled a guy on stage to play guitar! So there they were holding people off, when Bono began with "come on down, come on down" and he was waving people in, soon the floor was overrun with fans from the side and upper sections. Back then 18k people was a large concert for U2...
when Bono started to dance with that girl on stage, brought a tear to my eye as i realized i was at this show in MLG '85 , 40 feet from the stage dead center with my buddies Andrew+Mark
awesome show + band
had everyone singing "40" from inside , down thru the streets after the show
I know you were at that show because I was, too, and I remember singing "40" as we left the building and how it continued outside. Incredible. Incredible.
I saw them twice on both the Zoo Tv and the Pop Mart tours in Toronto. You have a great city there...I'll have to get back.
Wow, if that was the concert at Maple Leaf Gardens in March of 1985.....
I was there.
All of 20 years old, my first U2 concert. They closed the show with 40. We sang that song even as the lights came up. We sang that song walking out the doors. We sang that song walking down Carleton Street in front of the Gardens. I've never seen anything like it before or since.
I've managed to catch U2 every time they've come to Toronto since that show in 85.
Wow - where did you get this ??? That was my first U2 concert. Maple Leaf Gardens 1985 - what a show! Was sitting in the Greens. I was a punk in 1st year University. Thanks for posting !
Funny you should say that, I remember back in the 1980's when U2 were considered sort of an underground type band. In colleges back then, U2 was definitely an important "underground band".
You are absolutely right. Mainstream radio didn't really play U2 back then. They were almost considered alternative. College radio really helped break them out. An amazing career for the lads. They made it to the top on their terms.
Yeah, I mean they were huge by the "Unforgettable Fire" but they were not really recognized by the mainstream media that much. I think with U2 is that their "underground" following reached critical mass and it became a point when the mainstream media couldn't ignore them. I think it was just after Live Aid that this happened. Still, at the in 1984 and early 1985 your average person on the street didn't know Bono (as hard as that may seem to believe now).
i was at this show too! best concert of my life
