it has never been thought to have been extinct. It's just from an incredibly old family. They are incredibly well known so i don't know who told you that they were extinct. They are direct descendants from an old type of creature from around the cambrian times and are the last of their kind left i think. not sure though. Related to sea scorpions and stuff

Yes, it is sad, indeed. This is some sort of a behavior disorder only animals (and not only mammals, btw) begin when they're living in captivity. Sad, very sad, like I said. But those are very impressive crabs, if I may say so. Have seen them in their natural environment when I was a a very small kid, I think it must have been in N.C. they are massive and impressive and so ancient.
