  • I have the same TV. Screen did not do what yours was doing, but mine would randomly cycle through inputs on it's own. Also, the volume will fluctuate on its own, and never stays constant. I have had the repair guy come out twice now. He replaced the board and about a week later it started cycling through inputs on its own again. Toshiba is not much help either when you call their customer service.. They could care less, and have refused to replace my TV even though it is still under warranty.

  • Yeah, my "touch buttons" didn't work out of the box.. Had to do a factory reset.. Worked for awhile.. NOW after boot I have audio but NO VIDEO!!! I think in my case it's a backlight issue. I say this because if you shine a flash light at the TV at the right angle and are looking at it from an angle as well you can actually see the picture is there. This has been happening for days now.. Normally after 20-30min, maybe more, the picture will display properly. Toshiba says to do a firmware update.

  • bought a toshiba 20hl67 - same problem - the toshibas are garbage, unfortunately, cause the picture is deceavingly nice

  • @sirdenys - yes, the picture is nice, except when it's whacking out.

Since I wrote that last update to tednugentlives we've had the resolution cycling problem return again once, right after a power outage. We're protected with ZAPCAP, so it wasn't a surge or nearby lightning strike or anything, just a power outage. This time, since the cable box had to reboot (~10 mins), we went straight back into Netflix to continue what we were doing before the outage. Continued ===>

  • Continued ====> The set ran fine then, but when we went back to the cable box, the screen resolution was jumping all over again.

Perhaps SOME of our issue has been HDMI communications between the cable box and the set; we're just not sure. To rule it out, we had Brighthouse come out to switch cable boxes from a Scientific Atlanta to a Samsung box. We'll see what happens next...

    The continuing saga...

  • Somehow googling this model brought me here. Im buying this model tomorrow, and you have a promlem child. Did you read the manual? Page 5 states allow 4" away from a structure for ventilation. I see you did not follow this. The top and sides must be open to allow tv to cool, else the board will fry. Yours did.

  • @tednugentlives - If you were smart, you'd go in the other direction and buy a Samsung or something else.

NO, this TV is not suffering from an overheat condition, but thanks for the observation. This TV was rushed to market, full of issues, INCLUDING the motherboard problem. A little due diligence on your part is going to save you a lot of heartache later.

Go to Amazon.com and search for "Toshiba 42SL417U" and read the 2.5 star reviews, including mine, or learn the hard way... UVBNWARND

  • Motherboard has been changed for the second time, and the problem has not resurfaced, yet. It does still have an issue with screen brightness fluctuations in the evening. Both sets (the orignal & the replacement) and both replacement motherboards have had this issue that can only be solved by turning off the auto adjustment feature that monitors room lighting. It should be noted that the fluctuations occur on their own in stable room lighting.
