  • how many strings does a banjo have ?

  • @nycpd75

    4, 5 or 6. Typically.

  • @nycpd75 Tenor banjo has 4 strings mostly tuned in GDAE, and that is what barney is playing on here, then you have 5-string-banjo and i don't know any standard tunings for those, and then guitar-banjo wich has 6 strings and is tuned like a guitar EADGBE

i actually once met a guys who had a homemade 8 stringed banjo. just looked wierd! haha!

  • What's the first tune? I recognise but can't name it.

    Ok

    And the second?

    Cheers.

  • Good on ye barney

  • this is so AWESOME! :D

my dad listens a lot to this music, he has old records of them.

they dont make music like this anymore :(

  • @xRiica ur wrong m8, the high kings doing great job in following up

  • @kwondoo there doing a good job, but they are not as good as the dubliners....dont get me wrong i think there doing a good job, but id prefer listening to some old tracks from Ronnie Drew and Luke Kelly, then listening to high kings live

  • @cliptop 9 months after saying the high kings are doing a great job i have admit i was wrong. There doing okay, but i havent listened to them once in the past few months, where as im listening to the dubliners every day.

  • Steve martin and Earl Scruggs are tied for best banjoist ever, but Barney is certainly up there.

  • Are those deliberate mistakes?

  • @fqat please the man is 70 years old give him a darn break..... Barney rocks and if you are not able to see it go listen to britney spears lipsigning live

  • @cliptop nty, I'd rather listen to a good banjo player

  • @cliptop are you kidding me? that was clean! you try play at that speed for 10 minutes. youtube is full of wannabes..

  • @crv26

Yes it is. It´s a Paragon Banjo from the 20/30ies.

  • so is barny mckenna in the dubliners? if so, does anyone know what song this solo is in? thanks!!

  • @crv26

Yes, Barney is in the dubliners.

    Barney IS the Dubliners.

He plays a set of tunes:

    -The old house

    -The maid behind the bar

    -The Boyne hunt

    -The Shaskeen reel

    The high reel

  • ala verga bien barny!!

  • exelenteeee

  • Banjo Barney for President !!!

  • he's tha bomb.!

  • what a genius no one compares with him

  • Whhheee haaaaa

  • awesome, i wanna do that too ;d

  • this is from the 40th reunion concert. at the Gaiety in Dublin. the tunes are maid behind the bar, the boyne hunt, the shaskeen reel and the high reel. , on the dvd it starts with the old house.

  • Time for a pint Lads!

  • what kind of banjo does he use? wat voor soort banjo bespeeld hij?

  • theres banjo players,

then theres really good ones, then insanely good ones

    then barney mckenna

  • I love banjo music and Barney MacKenna is in a class by himself. He's utterly fantastic.

  • YEAH OLE BARNEY ON CRACK!

  • barney is the best

  • I LOVE IRISH MUSIC!! and im from the states.

  • This is for the Irish banjo players, or Irish music addicts: the fist tune is called "The maid behind the bar".Bus does anybody know the three others next. I d' like to play them too, but I cannot find the music . Many thanks!!!

  • The 2nd & 4th tunes are both The High Reel, aka Duffy the Dancer (ONeills Dance Music of Ireland Nº 721).

  • I Thinks its The Gallway races, but i'm not shur.

  • The musical here is the four string tenor banjo, as opposed to the five string banjo used in bluegrass music. The tenor banjo is usually tuned to fiddletuning and so is great for fiddle tunes, although it requires a good finger stretch to reach the notes. Being less popular than the five-string you can get a serviceable tenor quite cheap - I bought mine for £20 sterling from a bloke in the pub whose wife was nagging him for having too many musical instruments cluttering up the house!

  • Hi guys im thinking of getting a banjo!

    Is it worth the money??

  • Only if you push yourself to the limit to actually learn something on it.

And if you ejaculate everytime you hear a banjo

    I would recommend a banjo.

No but seriously, only if you really want it and if you are dedicated to it I would persue your dream.

  • @PJMc13 it sure is got my son banjo for 21st birthday 8 years later he is a wizzard

  • God bless lads

    xx

  • I love this Irish hillbilly stuff!

  • Sublime!

  • he is totaly awsome. only two people can play the banjo as good as this. and those are barneyMcKenna And Dolly Parton

  • Comment removed

  • impressive...just impressive

I'm becoming addicted to the dubliners and to irish trad music

  • @bimmershot Welcome to the club! Check out Planxty; you'll be glad you did.

  • @bimmershot two other good bands are flogging molly and the dropkick murphys

  • The old Fisherman at his best.

    Barney is the greatest.

  • Listen to this LIVE at Vicar Street, enjoy a Guinnes, and then tell your lassie why she is redundant just before the season kicks off...life

  • As a matter of fact, this is the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin. Dear Ronnie Drew was still with us then, you can hear his voice at the end.

  • Couldn't have put it better. I was at Vicar Street in 2008, drinking a lot of Guinness....redundant indeed

  • Truly amazing player! The Dubliners are awesome!

  • The music of the West

  • how west are irish reels?

  • The language of music is universal, but its origins vary.

  • not really

  • Well l know the banjo dates from West Africa originally, but that is still the West isn't it ?

  • just amazing!

  • Definately not bluegrass, but it's amazing how closely related they are. Look at songs like the Sailor's Hornpipe etc. There's a big round of tunes that the Irish imagrants brought to the U.S. After watching McKenna's tunes, I'm gonna want a 4 string now too. haha!

  • What the hell? Barney and Eammon were on fucking crack here, Jesus Christ!

  • C'mon Barney

  • People in America think this is bluegrass, lol

  • Not quite

  • Only people who have not been exposed to real Irish traditional music, one of the great things about youtube is tha ability to send a link to someone to how them what excellent music and musicianship truly is !

    Go Barney !!

  • no, it's green grass

  • I don't and I've never been outside the States. THIS IS IRISH! :D

  • forgive those who you have spoken too lol, most of us in new england can I.d this as Irish

  • i love it!!!! i hope i will later be just as cool as they are!!!

  • when i'll be old i'll be more beard than body rofl

  • amazing old men with beards

  • what a good player god bless such talent. xxxxxxx xxxxxxx

  • That was AMAZING!

    Thanks for sharing-

  • Mighty stuff lad, anyone know the song names?

  • i bet if you got these guys drunk they would be like 4 times better lmfao one of those kind of bands lol

    Excellent

    Jo Sparkes

    11/1/2009

  • Barney is nog steeds de beste banjo-speler ter wereld die ik ooit gehoord heb!

    Go Barney

  • Bravo! for both players

  • We call the 1st one Judy's Reel, here in Canada.

    Thanks for the post.

  • Barny Mc Kenna best Banjo Player ever!

  • 100% agree

    Love it!
