I wouldnt say underrated, they might not have consistent radio play but they're widely recognized by the music (not strictly hiphop) community as legends. They've been making their mark for years and years.

I think the roots didn't wanna be defined as jazz/funk/alternative. They never wanted to be, but possibly with the first few albums it possible that still began to happen. and so, they changed the game with the phrenology and the tipping point. They want to keep on being considered a hip-hop group, and so they changed the game to not be defined as anything alse but a hip-hop group, although to me they aren't your average hip-hop group.
