Surely you know that there is a soloist at a Classical concerto. But there is a structural difference too.In a symphony there 's only one exposition of the opening movement, wheres in a concerto there's a double exposition : the first in the tonic key played by the orchestra, and the second in a related key,and almost (but not) similar to the first exposition in style, played by the soloist
Definitely too slow. Maybe he is trying here a new approach or he wanted to try something different.
In his mozart recordings with the Berlin Philarmonic (46 symphonyes), released by DG, this synphony is played faster than here. Actually this first movement lasts 7.38 minutes.
I'm currently doing a comparison of all the great conductors who perfromed this piece, and so far this is the slowest, most subdivided and wrong-headed of all! Maestro Bohm, a great conductor in so much music, is WAY off the mark here!
Bohm is sometimes too slow, but his Mozart is excellent. I have heard his version of the 9 Beethoven symphony it is SOOOO slow. But Mozart is wonderful, have listened to all bohms versions a million times. They are BEST.
Bearing in mind that the Euph wasn't developed until the 1840s and this Symphony was composed in the 1770s (and Euphs don't feature in symphonia, generally speaking); I would say it is more likely that you heard a French Horn.
boehm conducts wonderfully slow, allegro moderato gives the right to do so, and so you can hear all the beauty of mozarts music. most of the great conductors of the past chose similar tempi, like klemperer and walter, and clearly conduct in 4 not in 2 like many modern conductors. i also believe in 4 in this movement, as well in the 2nd movement the slower version is better
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm falling asleep with this slow interpretation----and this is a Mozart symphony I know well. I'm glad Bohm wasn't the conductor of my city's orchestra.
this is the first time i listen to this song .Can anyone please tell me how many types of instruments are used in this song . i could not hear any sound from the trumpet ,flute trombone as well as the timpani
Originally it was scored for oboes, horns, and strings. Mozarts symphonies are usually scored as such, although the changes in orchestration practice that occurred during his lifetime show in his occassional inclusion of clarinets (then a nascent instrument) and bassoons. Mozart was the last great composer to use this more traditional instrumentation.
I used to be like "why so slow" when I listened to Bohm. But after listening to him, now when I listen to faster intepretations, sometimes I'm like "slow down! you're destroying all the wonderful details and the beautiful melodic lines." I think Bohm's slow tempo add a extra dimension to Mozart's symphonies most of the time. Of course, there're times it doesn't work, e.g. No. 25 Mov 1, I definitely prefer it played at a reasonably fast tempo. But Bohm's slow tempo works well here.
It is VERY slow, but I think that I understand Bohm's idea - sometimes, the slow tempo enables one to find new sounds; fast is energetic, but sometimes causes specific notes to disapear... eg., listen to 2:04 and see how passionate it sounds like. And I usually like fast tempo....
The beginning so remarkable its felt you of beauty of nature and also Mozart so genius when he make whole instruments work very well its make the public so comfort to hear he´s own music.
Every conducter had hes own style in lead Sinfonia and that doesn´t mean I scorn the great Karajan or ignore Karl Bohm even in my opinion I prefer always Herbert Karajan in Beethoven Sinfonia und Karl Bohm in Mozart Sinfonia.
I have heard it (since it´s my Mozart´s fav sym)in a much faster temp under great conductors. But this one enhances many interesting things in this score that hearing it faster are not as noticeable...Great conductor, and the best orchestra!!!
I agree with the complaints concerning tempi. Bohm /VPO is a great combination but the tempo just doesnt sound/feel right . He generally preferred leisurely tempi.. but this....I have a recording of this conducted on original instruments by Trevor Pinnock and the tempi there is at the other extreme. Too fast and aggressive !
a proper performance of this movement should NOT last over 9:00...it ruins the whole asthetic of the piece...WAY too heavy handed;almost down right comical performance...this performance no-where NEAR does the Work justice.
Bohm recorded this with the Berlin Philharmonic in the studio in the 60's at a slightly faster tempo. Towards the end of his life Bohm seemed to get a little slower and sometimes heavy handed. Anyone else notice that Bohm never seemed to age? He's at least 80 in this video!

This is the perfect tempo! Why complain? Mozart wrote Allegro moderato on his score. Not just a plain Allegro. The tempo is fine!

Slow doesn't mean bad, folks!
Böhms interpretation applies some qualities to
the symphony that faster versions don't have -
and vice versa. And, believe me, if Mozart himself
had lived longer, he would have interpreted this
symphony differently when he was 65 from when
he was 18!

This is not performed as an allegro moderato marked by an 18 year old Mozart. The youthful vigor of the piece is lost.
