Yeah he nailed the beauty of these. But that's not all. Go listen to his classical stuff. He recorded a bunch of it and applied his inventiveness to the arrangements but as with the lads, imbued his respect for that too. What a guy. His low key playing and few words kinda hide the techniques he must have invented to get those unique sounds. He also knew how to record a guitar so we get the whole business.
What a great combo, Chet and the Beatles. Chet gave me my love for the guitar and some of the best music of the 20th century was written by the Beatles!
yes in just about everything there is going to be someone who is better then you but musicians don't have that mind set, nobody should be so narrow minded. downfall of people all together.
Regardless of whether you think Chet is better than Tommy, or vice-versa, (personally I like both) one thing I think we ALL can agree on is............they're MUCH better than any of the stuff we hear these days, atrocities liek Justin Beiber, Rebecca Black, Willow Smith and Jenna Rose are killing the industry.
Atkins was the most influential guitar player of the 20th century. Players from Tommy Emmanuel to Earl Klugh & Carlos Santana, say hearing him when they were kids is why they started playing. I'm 68 and not liking country I never listened, didn't know of all the jazz, rock & and pop he played. In the last few years I've come to understand what a talent he really was.
i agree with what skaedia and alot of people are sayin, that you cant compare guitarist simply because its not a contest. .. there are obvious guitarist who are better than others, you cant deny that. but there is not point in comparing tommy emmanuel and chet atkins or fight about it, im sure tommy would think you were insane if he saw what some people were writing here.. with that being said,,, i do think chet is the greatest guitar player of all time.. no no one mezmerizes people likehedoes
Wow. Regardless of where Chet "Mr. Guitar" Atkins fits in the hierarchy of pickers, he will eternally be unique...and beloved...to the many, many people whose lives were enriched by his music. His music is part of the soundtrack of my youth. It will endure long after we're gone. Isn't that enough? The comparisons don't do much to diminish (or heighten) the legacy of the man and his music.
Yeah, you are correct about the C.G.P. Mark Knopfler called him the real "Country Gentleman" of the guitar. And Chet often referred to himself, "with characteristic humility," as "just a country guitar player."
Incredible artist. One of the good things in this world.
In Chet's final years he gave himself the title C.G.P.: country guitar picker. Of course he was so much more than that. I got to see him shortly before he died. I grew up with Chet's music in my house. He almost seemed like part of our family.
actually your wrong about C.G.P it stands for Certified Guitar Player.
He gave himself (along with John Knowles, Tommy Emmanuel, Steve Wariner and Jerry Reed) the honorary award that he created himself CGP, standing for "Certified Guitar Player"
Actually your wrong about the meaning of CGP. It stands for Certified Guitar Player.

@murfdog19 yeah, but the the beatles, themselves, were inspired by country (and by all things american such as blues, motown, elvis, etc) ringo, for example, was a huge buck owens fan (act naturally is a buck tune).
It´s cool that you noticed it kinda sounds like fighting the hammer bros in super mario 3^^ lol glad to see i´m not the only one that picked on that. XD
I think to many people put tommy and chet in the same category and you just can't do that. they are differnt, sure they finger pick. but they are in different leagues, plus! Tommy Emmanuel would be nothing without Chet paving the way.
There is no doubt. Notice that Chet was a trailblazer. Also, that he kept perfect timing and rhythm, never rushing the pieces, or embellishing them more than necessary. If you haven't done so, listen to his own version of 'Young Thing' which he composed. Blew me away. Too bad we never hear his music much on mainstream radio. Sad.
look, every can like whatever they like but chet gave a better show as proven by record sales, tv shows, and the hundreds of albums he was asked to play on. chet is flat out better.
In fact I'm so sure of this if you asked tommy he would say chet was better without a doubt. tommy does some different things than chet but not even hardly better
Chet himself would not like the tone or subject of your discussion. He gave Tommy Emmanuel the rare title C.G.P. I think you never grasped the idea that playing the guitar is NOT a competition. Don't spoil our fun by remarks of who is better than the other. We really need not know. Chet was always willing to give credit to other players. Why don't we follow his example?
Chet played everything so effortlessly that it appeared deceptively easy. I think Tommy evolved the art and took it to another level. Technically, Tommy is unequalled. From the standpoint of innovation, you really have to tip your hat to Chet, though. He gave Lenny Breau the idea of using cascading harmonics, he changed Tommy's life with his thumbpick, and he was Earl Klugh's main inspiration. Not to mention countless others.
You are right ! Stop asking "who's the best, who's the god"... They all have their own particularity, even if it's just a vibrato on a single note ! And Chet is like a father for them and us. We miss him.
And as I heard one very wise fellow say at the C.A.A.S., no matter how good any one picker is, we're all playing in Chet's sandbox! True, brother, true. Thanks, Chet.
you really think that? I haven't heard anything from tommy that would make me think of him as a guitar legend or even as good as chet or les paul or many others...
My dad had that exact shirt, which is also the one Chet is wearing on the cover of his album The Best of Chet and Friends with all the dogs lying around. haha.. I used to tell my friends it was THE shirt... I was only 12
My all time favorite guitarist performing a medley of my all time favorite band. Soooooo nice. I miss Chet, John and especially George. Everyone should have a copy of "Chet Atkins Picks on the Beatles". I wish more young kids would give him the respect he deserves. He's truly amazing.
When that recording was made, Chet had been pickin' for 40 0r 50 years....
So basically a few decades of dedication, living and practically sleeping with your guitar as well as making over a hundred albums, and you start to sound pretty good!
But it's true..I have a photo, and Chet often fell asleep with his guitar on his lap.
And there would be no Merle without this guy and no this guy without that guy. To be honest, there also will never be another Tommy so just sit back and enjoy.
To say the least. Take "Lady Madonna" for example...Tommy plays of the parts at the same time. That's talent. But you can't ever discount Chet Atkins. Without him, there would be no Tommy Emmanuel!
