Anyone who thinks John is just a rip-off after watching this clearly is as musical as a rock. Usually you'll see a Two Rock JM Signature Series and a Dumble of some sort - usually an Overdrive Special or a Steel Stringed Singer. He said he loves the Two Rock because the tones are super clean.

Try copping some of her crazy tunings and fingerstyle playing --- not easy, at least for me! Cobain was VERY distinctive and VERY widely imitated. To my ears, JM is very, very good, but sounds a LOT like SRV.

mayer doesnt use boss pedals, except for a keeley modded bd-2 that a lot of blues players like. I think he uses a keeley compressor too that would give him more sustain. and the pickups in this guitar are a fender custom shop version of the lindy fralin underwound pickups he uses. weak output and scooped mids so he can boost his amps harder and really draw out the tone of the dumbles and two rocks he uses.

@chillguitardude10 thanks. im trying to find something to increase my sustain for songs like this and when playing gary moore songs. it really sounds good when youre playing a slow blues song like this or a power ballad and you need to sustain out a note for awhile which increases the feeling soulfullness like it does in this song.

oh and he uses boss tu-2 tuner pedals. thats the only boss pedals he uses to my knowledge

@srvanddoubletrouble1 He also uses a Keeley katana with sustain, which is part of the reason everything stays unbelievably smooth when he's doing those bends for forever. The ultra-clean leveling on the katana really helps compressors.

Any old sustain pedal should do fine for practice and smallish gigs.

John's main secret to his tone: tens of thousands of hours of practice. Trite, perhaps, but important to remember.
