@fontanalu gold doesn't oxidize or tarnish over time and sound really good for a long time. At least that's what I've heard. Never had the cash to buy a set.
"Why don't more bar bands play Who music? Because there is only one John Entwistle. Everything I write has the bass playing lead and the six string playing rhythm." - Pete Townsend
LOL - so the Ox could talk! Besides Entwistle in the Who, I can't think of one other player in any other band in which the bass played such a dominate and dynamic role! Pete so often switched roles so that the guitar anchored a song while John just did these amazing runs and riffs with what was essentially "lead bass." But when you combine John AND Keith Moon, probably the most wildly inventive, manic drummer of all time, I think you have the greatest rock rhythm section EVER to take a stage!
This was due to the idiots who were going to concerts in the 90's.Had no clue what they were watching. After the concert they proceeded to burn the whole stage.Real cool.....
The song was written with a capo. Pete Townsend played it with one too. It's not about barring. The song has a C note droning over the power chords being played. It can't be played in this key without a capo.

I had the privilege of shaking Ox's hand once at the House of Blues in LA. I swear he could have crushed my hand had he wanted to...good fortune on me he didn't.
We opened for John Entwistle and the band at the Sound Cafe in Norwalk, CT before he passed away. It was a huge treat to be able to play his Buzzard Basses before the gig and he even let me use his rig for the gig. He used "Acoustic Sound Systems." How rock is that to play cabinets that say "ASS" on them!
@JungKiChris: Yet another "John Entwistle, Nice Guy" story. By all accounts he was as steady as he appeared -- interest in cocaine notwithstanding.
Years ago I read a story about a fan who actually visited JE at his home. John gave him a tour during which the fan accidentally knocked over and damaged one of the rare guitars in John's collection. JE's response? "Uh-oh. Looks like we need to make a trip to the guitar doctor." No anger, no blame. Just . . . take care of it. Cool dude.
@Fenderwolf95 I would say yes, it was really low. Although the action wasn't ridiculously low to where you all you get is fret buzz all over the place. It was set up nice! He saw my "Frankenstein" Bass that I put together and noticed it had a graphite neck. That's when he brought me downstairs to check out the Buzzards. That was a great night for me.
@JungKiChris I've played one of Johns Buzzard ones (friend of a friend of a friend has one!) and teh action can be set crazy low but still be clean sounding with now buzz! (His was 0.8mm on that one, set up exactly as john had it set up before he passed) Awesome basses!
@Ominous09 Absolutely, it was an unbelievable time for me. I don't mind you asking at all. As with anything that happens in the music industry, stay in the business long enough to know the right person. :)
indeed john was the first to really use this tone on a bass he also was the first to pull off a bass solo (that song is my generation) he played his bass better than anyone else could and can he is the best
@atgskater14 The tone came originally from using Marshall bass amps with everything turned up in an attempt to be heard as The Who were a volume band and the distortion on the bass was due to the amps overloading (Entwistle would regularly blow his valves). Townshend started this volume playing as he was experimenting with feedback at the time and actually influenced Hendrix who went out a got Marshall amps to get the fedback but by that time Towshend had moved on to HiWatts.
The Jerry Garcia Band was also another good band. If you like solo careers. They were a bit of a softer rock. Got good use out of a Hammond B3. (Formed by Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead, now the band is called The Dead...I apologize if you already knew or don't even care about them. Just my opinion about good solo bands... Not that Pete, Keith and Roger did amazingly on their own, because they did.)

@SpaceVulcan ah right, thanks for that. i always thought that warwick were after seeing as they would be cheaper to make so could be distributed more to the public
I was on the tour bus with Godfrey Townsend (Guitarist) and Jack Bruce last year at Hippiefest, and Godfrey played this audio( for me and I sang over it...let me tell you ....that was a trip !
Thanks Godfrey ,as that's as close as I'm going to get to singing with John.
Brother you got to remember that John was doing this stuff when Marcus wasnt born, so you have to take that into consideration before making a lame remark like that.
@awesomejohnnet No, Miller was born in 59 so Ox wasn't doing it before he was born. There is no disputing Entwistles sound as a major influence. I just think as a player he is extremely over-rated
Hes not overated "for his time period" when there wasnt anyone doing any of that stuff. He sparked off a great generation of bass players to "step forward" and rumble. His technique at the time was awe inspiring for the standards of those days. Yes there are better bass technicians but john was a "ground breaker" he did it first when no one else could think of it or have the nerve to step forward and go for it. And he was successful with it! He is to bass what Jimi was to SRV.
@awesomejohnnet I agree that Entwistle went on to influence a "sound" rather than a style - nobody else has ever been so self-indulgent apart from perhaps Chris Squire or Geddy Lee in the rock field. But James Jamerson started a much larger and more inspiring style of playing much earlier. A style that still carries on to this day
@indyandsam COME ON....OVERRATED????? SORRY DUDE, ANYBODY MY AGE THAT BECAME A BASSIST WILL TELL YOU, WHAT THEY SAW THE OX DO INFLUENCED THEIR DECISION TO PLAY THE 4 BANGER. WATCH A FEW OX VIDEOS BEFORE YOU MAKE A SILLY COMMENT.
to say Chris Squire is a better singer than Daltrey because he can harmonize is hilarious! Squire can sing/harmonize well, no doubt about it but not better than Daltrey. See Tommy, Quadrofenia, Who's Next, By Numbers etc. Squire and Geddy, Sting, Adam Clayton and many others cited Entwistle their influence. Notice Entwistle was the ONLY bass player to be voted, "BASSIST OF THE MILLENIUM". CHEERS
Notice how I give credit to John Anderson and Chris Squire and ELP? Chris Squire is one of my favorite bass players along with John Entwistle (Bassist Of The Millenium) and Roger Glover and Geddy Lee. Greg Lake has a great voice, great band. You keep knocking The Who and I keep complimenting other bands as well, what's up with that? Why cant you appreciate all bands and artists? Why is one or the other with you? While Entwistle is not a great singer, he could harmonize yrs ago. cheers
Not trying to cause a feud, Wentz sucks Entwitsle is Amazing that is soo true!
But loads of people strum bass, i always strum bass (this is while playing finger style not with a pick?) Look at Sheehan for example a great Bassist huge influence on me and Chris Squire, not Alot though, just an observation,
As a bass player who always listened to funk and fusion, yes Jaco, Berlin etc I have never quite got the adoration that Entwistle produces. But after watching him play on many vids he is a unique voice. He is uncopyable as was his wish. His unique right hand technique and his take on the minor pentatonic are well inspired unpredictable.
For me Geddy Lee was my hero, more melodic and precise. But the Who are a totally different band.
for all of you who have just viewed John Enwistle for the first time, what you just witnessed was the "Bassist Of The Millenium" voted by other professional bass players and musicians in 2000. You ask yourself WTF was that? This is not real. Nobody can play like that. He is not human. Trust me he was real. I have seen him many times. That bass was loud and cut right through you. He was full of energy, and excitement. Check out his other vids. The Who greatest live band and Entwistle, nuff said
Gedddy states that the Ox was his influence and The Who influenced Rush. The Who also influenced Kiss, Alice Cooper, The Police, U2, Tubes, The Ramones. Pearl Jam, Bowie, Elton John, The Clash, and many many others. cheers
Man oh man I praise the OX but Geddy Lee and Rush have prroduced music so much more complex then the Ox's noodling uts beyond compare. I am amazed you can say that. The Ox only knew one scale. Rush are well a littele more complex.
To all those who think getting a "Buzzard" will help you sound better...don't waste your money!
The true sound is in your hands...not the bass. Take a look at John's lesson vid from '84...he's usng an Ibanez, and still gets his signature sound...
Maybe people want a certain bass because they like it? I know I'm a good enough bassist that I would sound good on just about any bass guitar that was setup right, but that doesn't mean that I'm not allowed to have a preference for a certain model.
How about not trying to tell other people what they shouldn't be doing? ;)
That bass is better than the original. Just goes to show the ox got even better wirh age...as if thats possible. Wicked sick is an understatement of his talents. RIP John we still love you and your music!!
@Queenman101 WTF you talkin about????/ Anybody with evena rudimentary knowledge of the band knows John was "the ox'. in fac that was the name of one of his bands you dumb ass. Stick with "Queen" facts.
@clashlc A guy called mrwilliamjoel said that "Geddy Lee, John Paul Jones, Pual McCartney, Roger Waters.... all great, all incredibly talented bass players. John Entwistle, however, is not a bass player. He was a fucking bass god, and no mortal could every come close? Dead? No, John Entwistle was just too damn good for us. He's off playing "The Real Me" For God, Buddha, Vishnu, Allah, and Zeus. "

The guitar player is top notch as well , sings his ass off!

Pete Townsend said it best when he said "John reinvented the instrument. That is why the bass plays lead on all of out songs."
There are only two names in discussing the bass; Entwistle and Collins, and what they did was make the instrument their own in a very unique way.
RIP OX and that you for the generation of pretenders you left as your legacy.

Christ. Musicians are boring . I saw Marcus Miller 6 years ago and Entwistle might as well be a ukelele player
indyandsam 1 year ago
@indyandsam
Brother you got to remember that John was doing this stuff when Marcus wasnt born, so you have to take that into consideration before making a lame remark like that.
awesomejohnnet 1 year ago
@awesomejohnnet No, Miller was born in 59 so Ox wasn't doing it before he was born. There is no disputing Entwistles sound as a major influence. I just think as a player he is extremely over-rated
indyandsam 1 year ago
@indyandsam
He is to bass what Jimi was to SRV.
awesomejohnnet 1 year ago
@awesomejohnnet I agree that Entwistle went on to influence a "sound" rather than a style - nobody else has ever been so self-indulgent apart from perhaps Chris Squire or Geddy Lee in the rock field. But James Jamerson started a much larger and more inspiring style of playing much earlier. A style that still carries on to this day
indyandsam 1 year ago
@indyandsam COME ON....OVERRATED????? SORRY DUDE, ANYBODY MY AGE THAT BECAME A BASSIST WILL TELL YOU, WHAT THEY SAW THE OX DO INFLUENCED THEIR DECISION TO PLAY THE 4 BANGER. WATCH A FEW OX VIDEOS BEFORE YOU MAKE A SILLY COMMENT.

And the debate rages on... there is no best or better even...James Jamerson? Still, Entwistle? The best! Now move on.

to say Chris Squire is a better singer than Daltrey because he can harmonize is hilarious! CHEERS
MrTrajan69 1 year ago
Notice how I give credit to John Anderson and Chris Squire and ELP? Chris Squire is one of my favorite bass players along with John Entwistle (Bassist Of The Millenium) and Roger Glover and Geddy Lee. Greg Lake has a great voice, great band. You keep knocking The Who and I keep complimenting other bands as well, what's up with that? Why cant you appreciate all bands and artists? Why is one or the other with you? While Entwistle is not a great singer, he could harmonize yrs ago. cheers
MrTrajan69 1 year ago
@MrTrajan69 So true,so true. I give the credit for shaping the bass player I am now to The Ox and JPJ, easily. The blues, man.

two words= Pete Wentz
Doderhultarn89 1 year ago
who is Pete Wentz?
jimothy60 1 year ago 3
It was a joke. Pete Wentz is the bassplayer of the band Fall out boy. He sucks. He even strums his bass, i have never seen anyone do that.
Doderhultarn89 1 year ago 3
Not trying to cause a feud, Wentz sucks Entwitsle is Amazing that is soo true!
But loads of people strum bass, i always strum bass (this is while playing finger style not with a pick?) Look at Sheehan for example a great Bassist huge influence on me and Chris Squire, not Alot though, just an observation,
Note:
Love this version maybe more than the original!

May the memory of the ox live on.
blunt1 1 year ago 9
for all of you who have just viewed John Enwistle for the first time, what you just witnessed was the "Bassist Of The Millenium" voted by other professional bass players and musicians in 2000. You ask yourself WTF was that? This is not real. Nobody can play like that. He is not human. Trust me he was real. I have seen him many times. That bass was loud and cut right through you. He was full of energy, and excitement. Check out his other vids. The Who greatest live band and Entwistle, nuff said
MrTrajan69 1 year ago 3
Gedddy states that the Ox was his influence and The Who influenced Rush. The Who also influenced Kiss, Alice Cooper, The Police, U2, Tubes, The Ramones. Pearl Jam, Bowie, Elton John, The Clash, and many many others. cheers

@blunt1 geddy is a child as fare as bassists are concerned that is what i played before i was good enough to play entwistle

Man oh man I praise the OX but Geddy Lee and Rush have prroduced music so much more complex then the Ox's noodling uts beyond compare. I am amazed you can say that. The Ox only knew one scale. Rush are well a littele more complex.
blunt1 1 year ago
@blunt1 fuck Geddy Lee and Rush. Entwistle is G0d!!!

@blunt1 Are you serious? Entwistle is one of the greatest rock bassists in history, as is Lee.

"The best bassist ever is rocking out like mad and the crowd is stone d"!
goatboy420 1 year ago
To all those who think getting a "Buzzard" will help you sound better...don't waste your money!
The true sound is in your hands...not the bass. Take a look at John's lesson vid from '84...he's usng an Ibanez, and still gets his signature sound...
shantypiker41367 2 years ago
Maybe people want a certain bass because they like it? I know I'm a good enough bassist that I would sound good on just about any bass guitar that was setup right, but that doesn't mean that I'm not allowed to have a preference for a certain model.
How about not trying to tell other people what they shouldn't be doing? ;)

John Entwistle, however, is not a bass player. He was a fucking bass god, and no mortal could every come close? Dead? No, John Entwistle was just too damn good for us. He's off playing "The Real Me" For God, Buddha, Vishnu, Allah, and Zeus. "
