  • Great little band, there's a CD recorded in Basle, 2 May 1961 with this track on.

    Swiss Radio Days Jazz series.

  • a great one

  • Clayton and some fellow Basie alumni (trumpeter Emmett Berry, altoist Earl Warren and tenor saxophonist Buddy Tate) teamed up with a complementary rhythm section (pianist Sir Charles Thompson, bassist Gene Ramey and drummer Oliver Jackson

  • They are not jamming but playing an arrangement by Buck of a tune written by him.

  • Emmet Berry sure looks and sounds like Charlie Shavers. Wonder if it was a contractual thing where he couldn't use his real name.

  • "looks and sounds like Charlie Shavers." This is Emmett Berry, a major swing trumpeter, one of the few men who was featured soloist with both Fletcher Henderson and Basie.

"Will you have a drink of Doctor Berry's rootin' tootin' oil?" (EB, offering a flask of whiskey to a member of the Golden Gate Quartet.)

"Let that be a lesson to you. You goddam singers don't fuck with us musicians." (EB, after hitting Jimmy Witherspoon on the head with his trumpet for fighting with Sir Charles Thompson.)

  • Buddy Tate's a gangsta

  • This is absolutely fantastic. You upload some killer jazz!!!
