  • MERAVIGLIOSO

  • A most beautiful ballad.

  • With all your money and effort and all that you do to try and change things, nothing seems to matter in this sad world. Is it just unchangeable? Does it matter at all, what we do? Or why we are here?

  • RnoWordstothankU2:).>Boy

  • This song brings me to tears. I truly love it. Lucky share the same home town as U2 but my greatest regret is never seeing them live :(

  • @DieMenschMaschine85 Never too late!

  • @andrewglover6 : Cheers bro, I like your positivity!

  • @DieMenschMaschine85 your welcome! I thought I will never get to see them myself after missing out in the 90's. I finally got to see them in 2006 not far from One Tree Hill itself!

  • Was up there today with hubby's uncle who has cancer. He was rapt to see his two little nieces aged 11 & 12 but they kept asking where is the tree? We told them that the tree was chopped down, but the tree's spirit lives on through this very song. Thank you U2 :)

  • Bono and U2. NZ needs you now. Please do a concert in NZ and for Christchurch. Please donate all proceeds and profit to those in the Christchurch region who are going through such difficult times. U2.You are NZers as you have that connection with our country. Our country needs you now.Kia Kaha to those we call Our NZers through out the world at this most tragic of events. There are many bands that come and go through NZ but it seems like U2 truly are NZers/Kiwis.

  • I have read their books, mags, watched their interviews and have follwed them since the age of 14,

  • After 30 plus years of listening to these Irish rock legends; they still sound fresh and clear. Their music has always struck a chord in my life and memory. I hope they live forever.

  • sweet song

  • Yeah the largest charity bono has ever run and the fraud behind it. LOL. Get a clue.

  • my favorite U2 song EVER!!!! I would give anything to have this time in my life back, I would do so many things different.....

  • u2 are more than just an self made irish rock band, they are spiritual in every sense....................

  • @hanstonk Amen! Have you read any of their books? Check out "Walk On ~ The Spiritual Journey of U2" or "Get Up Off Your Knees". Very, very good stuff.

  • This song is of Bono's assistant who died in a motorcycle crash, Bono said he would only sing this song once, so he recorded this entirely in one take.

  • @120TOMTOM Wow, amazing fact. Thanks for sharing

  • @tonytone74 One tree hill is a famous land mark in Auckland New Zealand. Protestors tried to cut it down a few years back and it eventually had to be removed. bonos assistant who died was a kiwi. i went to a U2 concert in Auckland a few years back and it was their first time back in NZ since he died... was very moving, he sung this song and half the crowd was in tears. i think this is the only time he's preformed it live... but i could be wrong. i'm sure someone will correct me if i am.

  • What can I say. I've grown up with these guys, gone through love and marriages etc...

All I can say is ...thank you for being there

  • What can we say about this song. Its incredible.By far the best of U2

  • The song was originally made for Victor Jara - who was a college professor /poet/muscian - killed by Pinochet in Chile.

  • THE BAHAMAS NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD!!!

  • Okay, I'm ready to take a trip to NZ now after seeing this video......

  • Greg Carroll rest in peace brother. To Bono Bravo for the respect you have shown to Maori culture and customs

  • u2 did such an amazeing tribute for the 29miners of new zealand bless em

  • Dedicated to 29 lost souls of Pike River tonight at U2's concert in Auckland as their names rolled up the big screen. RIP.

  • How beautiful, "TheJoshua Tree" album was dedicated to Greg Carroll, a NZ Maori who was part of their team for 2years. When he passed away, they made this song for him . Died 3/7/86 ... R.I.P !!! xx

  • Coming from a Paddy I have always found this U2s most moving and powerful song. Written for and probably about a good Kiwi, their Roadie Gregg Carrol.

  • Comment removed

  • just about to look up who he was but you beat me to it fantastic song very moving

  • I am having this song played at my funeral.

  • a pic of the one tree hill in New Zealand would be good 1:20 yip thats it

  • @SINWGN

That tree is no longer there now. Some dude took a chainsaw to it....a few years back.

  • @chamben23 oh thats a shame we didn't get that news in Henderson...

  • @chamben23

Yeah protesting about maori rights or something. It was a shame.

  • Goddamn dude, U2 is so fucking boring. Everything about all their music just screams "NAAAAAPTIIIIIIIIIIIIME".

  • @jimih64 really? its relaxing chill music, I wouldn't say its boring

  • @chjohnst Eh. It's definitely chill, I'll give you that. I just find "the Edge's" guitar "playing" to be mind-numbingly dull. All he does is tap a few notes here and there and reloop it through several echoes. He really hardly actually plays.

    To each their own, though.

  • @jimih64

Maybe you are too dull. Tap into the spirit of it.

  • @v01741r31 lol don't be so fucking pretentious. I can respect lots of chill/relaxed music. U2 is neither. It's just simplistic, boring, crap. As a matter of fact, now I see where you get your pretentiousness from.

  • @jimih64

Lol, I wasn't being pretentious. Its slightly more difficult to even discern that in a comment box. Any ways that's your opinion. This happens to be beautiful music in my opinion. Its not like U2 is equivalent to Disney channel crap, you have to at least admit that they have musical integrity. In other words, its not totally void of any substance. If you can't admit that then fuck you (friendly f-u, not mean kind)

  • @v01741r31 No, sure they do. But musical integrity doesn't automatically equal good music.

  • @jimih64

Good, at least you can admit that. That's your opinion. I don't really like listening to Mozart... yet his musical sophistication surpasses probably anyone's. Mozart has GOOD music, its just simply not a type of music that speaks to me, most of the time. As long as we are not talking about something that is so awful to the point where we can't respect it period, most music is subject to opinion. That's all it is. People are drawn to music that speaks to their emotion and their spirit.

  • @jimih64

Its the exact same thing as types of ice cream. I like vanilla, I dislike chocolate. It doesn't mean I am inferior or stupid, it means that I have a different interpretation of the information being presented to me. Music is just a bunch of vibrations of sound waves, we each interpret them differently as well as the message, emotion, and spirit of the music. Most of it is entirely subjective. You can't really go around stating your opinion as fact when fact isn't even applicable.

  • nz 4 life

  • May Victor Jara rest in peace and remain an inspiration to us all.

  • The melody= nearly perfect or perfect, used to be my little secret song, felt likeI was holdinf a morsel of gold when I first heard it ! So soulful !! Long live Rock and Roll,Berry,Lennon and Joe Strummer ! Go away RAP,britney and madonna.

  • the joshua tree is my fav album of U2! great!!!!!

  • I've never liked U2 but I love this song. Would like to hear it sung by someone else. Pretty much anyone else actually.

  • @ClaudineJones

What a seriously sick in the head comment, like these guys [U2] knew and loved this guy and wrote this tribute in his memory, and what a source of grief ventilation it must be for everyone who knew the guy, how dare you metaphorically picket the heartfelt sentiments contained in this universal homage to the sudden loss of loved ones the world over.

  • @KenfromDublin Calm down! It's only Bono, not God, I doubt I'll end up burning in hell for all eternity for finding his voice irritating. And the only heartfelt sentiment I expressed on the song, metaphorically or otherwise, was that I loved it.

  • @ClaudineJones

  • never was a fan of U2. way too corny. for me, it overshadowed their talent...

but this song as awesome. and it's a great album.

  • @mcul2112 corny?! are you insane? i think you confused corny with godlike.

  • My dad named me after this song...at 2:06....Jara, that's my name!!! And this is why U2 is great...not only what they have done for me, but for what they have done for everyone in the world. When it comes to music, charities, donations, and hope. U2 is and will always be the best band ever..

  • @ApriliaNinja

My son's name is Joshua ;-)

  • @ApriliaNinja and do you know who was victor jara, after who you were named?

  • @tierna1981 yes a guy from chile, and a poet, and also a political member of the chilean communist party

  • @ApriliaNinja Oh I thought you might have been named "One tree hill"

  • @ApriliaNinja dont know why this song only has 290k hits!! it's a fukin classic!!!

  • @5500dannyk . Probably the reason there are so few hits comparitively is because the single was TOTALLY EXCLUSIVE to NZ. Pressed in Oz oweing to lack of resources and there was pressure I believe for local relase here. NO. It was NZ only and spent 6 weks there at No1. . My mate knew the manager at Festival Records. . Saw them in Auck but don't recall if they played it in the New Zooland Tour of 93 .

  • @eppeywonder Bono played a solo abbreviated version in '93.He played it in the slot often filled with unchained melody in other shows, just before 'Until the end of the world'.Played the full version in '89 though...

  • @eppeywonder Can't comment on the specifics, but I'm a Canadian who temporarily lived very close to One Tree Hill in 1986. I don't think this song was exclusive to NZ, because I very clearly remember hearing it in Canada in the late eighties.

  • @ApriliaNinja ~~your Dad was deep.... to pull that out of that song and feel strongly enough about it to name you Jara....beautiful!! thanks for sharing.

  • @ApriliaNinja hate that shit name..

  • @abrngriffeen hater...

  • @ApriliaNinja be proud of your name jara :) he was a singer same as u2 did ...

  • @ApriliaNinja i wish i had such a special name...

  • @ApriliaNinja

If you were named "Jara" because of this song, then I think that means that you were in effect named after the famous Chilean artist Victor Jara.

  • watching this reminds me what I have not seen for almost 10 years as have lived in the US for that time.

  • By far one of U2's best songs. Up there with One, Bad and Pride in the Name of Love

  • ah , the tree's i love the trees

  • U2 at thier very best. No band , artist could ever reach what they have ever achieved during the 80's and 90's. Best band ever....

  • Such a sad but beautiful song -- like a poem.

  • Nice compile.. Bug hugz from those who understand..

  • beautiful song, always makes me teary eyed

  • great song

  • After 25 years of listening exclusively to rock music, there are only 2 albums that I rediscover at different times in my life as I've gotten older. Those albums are The Joshua Tree by U2 and The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd.

The sheer depth and cohesiveness of the imagery in this album is the work of genius.

  • @schitzonix hmm yeah mine s joshua tree and blood sugar sex magiK

    theese albums are well MagiK

kind of different albums but pure genius especialy edge and frusciante

  • @schitzonix I know what you mean.

  • @schitzonix ...that is really good analysis there....gotta say the Wall for me is Pink Floyds best but agree about the joshua tree...hadn;t listened to it for ages till today but blows me away every time..quality

  • @schitzonix haha, I agree. :)

  • there are moments in music history we can look back and say that was a great time! the joshua tree, rubber soul, revolver, definatly maybe, the la's exile on main street, blood on the tracks etc etc. This is definatly one of the best albums of all time and certainly has the best 4 song start to an album ever! sad story behind this song and a great tune!

  • I can't believe this song was done in one take...it's so good!

  • I Kinda Like This Song,And I Like The Show ´One Tree Hill´

  • i live next to no (one) tree hill, this song even tho its not a kiwi band makes me think of nz,it should be in top 10 kiwi songs or somethin

  • It's a really great album, definitely.

  • i like this one too, in memory of the fella its dedicated to, scenery is awesome, wot country is this? im from kaikohe

  • Well, the scenery @ 3:12 is pretty obvious to me. Cuz I live there lol, it's called the "bulb-region" in Holland. The name leaves not much space for rhe imigination does it?

  • Not sure, but the song is called One Tree Hill, as there is a hill in Auckland, New Zealand called One Tree Hill and this song was written for one of U2's roadies who died in a motorbike crash, who was from Auckland NZ

  • This song makes me cry! :(

  • who doesn't cry ??? we see the sun go down in your eyes....

  • I saw the Joshua Tree Tour...amazing!! This is my all time Fav.

  • I remember when I got this CD - it was the first CD I ever purchased - The sound was amazing and the whole CD was played over and over again. Loved it than - love even more today

  • If I had to pick one U@ album to keep forever then "The Joshua Tree" is that album, no question about it. And this song is, to me, the most moving of all the songs. No surprise then to hear that it was written for the Maori U2 roadie worker who died on Bono's Harley during the tour.

  • what a song! takes my breath away... the joshua tree is a friggin fabulous album...

  • stevepwnz, I`d love to see that video, please put it up if you can
