I dont understand why he uses mutes when either the tuning slide or the main slide are off?? No noise is coming out of the bell so a mute is kinda pointless at those parts. I really like how it sounds when he uses the cup with out the tuning slide on

I have a feeling Cage was trying to be satyrical at the expense of trombonists in orchestras. Many gestures, tone qualities, inane ticks and vocal sound effects seem relatable IMO - but of course not hardly to the distilled extent of this work.

No way! At least as 2nd, you are permitted to be more "spaced out", 1st ALWAYS has to concentrate, count and lead in the 2nd (in my experience anyway). Don't consider bass, they have their own lines occassionally. But anyway, how wierd that we relate to this??
