what happened was it's called a jet wash it's when the air comes out of the engine and it blows out of the exost port. Loke that stuff comes out of you muffler but what happnes is that when it blows from that 747 it will blow you smaller plane around like a toy.... Same thing happened to me flying a Learjet 31 into Salt Lake City. They put us too close behind a Southwest 737 and we banked hard after hitting their wake turbulence. Approach Control in Salt Lake sucks.

That's wake turbulence caused by another jet flying at the same flight level or above.. it can get pretty serious if you are on final approach and you encounter the wake from the plane in front of you.
