About money, The taxes came after her because Religious don't pay taxes, but lay people do. Also, a vow of poverty makes anything you earn as a religious automatically go to the convent and not to you. She didn't DONATE it like you or I might. I think the convent was trying to do her a real favour legally keeping the name Soeur Sourire, it wasn't until after she got the name back that the taxes came at her. Name attached to convent, no taxes, name attached to person, taxes galore.
As a child in abusive foster care in 1964, this was my only link to hope. To this day I cannot help but be moved to tears when I hear it. Truly the voice of angels
If I understand these words right, she's quite bitter. But no doubt she had her reasons. I hope she experienced some of the joy that appears in her first album. It was incandescent.
I was only 5 when she became famous, but her angelic voice resinated in my little head for years, then fell in love with the guitar, and like her, prayed through song, me and my guitar. I named my guitar after her and later on, wrote songs myself. I think of her frequently and yearn for the world to hear the rest of the album that she first made. One day, soon I hope, A movie will be made about her love for her partner and music before she passed away. God bless you, and your Angelic voice.
She became addicted to alcohol and pills, and played shows to try and pay off her debt, but when the government threatened to close the school, Deckers and Prescher wrote letters to their family and friends, then committed suicide together on March 29, 1985 via a mixture of barbiturates and alcohol. ~ Gregory McIntosh, All Music Guide
Deckers and Prescher later opened a school for autistic children which they ran together through the '70s, but in the early ' 80s, the Belgium government informed Deckers that she owed over $60,000 in taxes on the profits of "Dominique". Since Deckers had donated all of the earnings from "Dominique" to her convent, she had no money to pay the fee.
. At this point, Deckers reunited with a close friend from her college days, Annie Pescher, and shocked her followers with her political song in favor of birth control, "Glory Be to God for the Golden Pill". She further alienated supporters by embracing radical stances and by her openly gay lifestyle with Prescher.
. But her sudden fame was more than she could handle, and in 1965 Soeur Sourire left the limelight for the shelter of the convent. After only one year away from music, however, Soeur Sourire announced her plans to leave the convent and resume her life as a musician, dropping the name Soeur Sourire (which she had always used reluctantly) and adopting yet another moniker, Luc Dominique. She used her given name, Jeannine Deckers when offstage.
The success of "Dominique" led to a 1965 Hollywood musical titled The Singing Nun, very loosely based on Soeur Sourire, starring Debbie Reynolds and Chad Everett.
Nothing wrong to follow intuition to live a Life, but, while doing it, every person, with all the respect, should be cautious about making life-changing decisions. Following intuition doesn't mean living on the edge.
You have to know Jeanine donated ALL the money she earned (it doesn't matter how many % but it were millions) to the convent. BUT the convent never ever paid the taxes on those earnings. When Jeanine left, the convent legally forbid her to use the name 'Soeur Sourire' or any translation. Many years later they give Jeanine the rights to this name IF she signed a conctract stating the convent did not owe her any money or obligation ever again. But then the taxes came knocking on Jeanine's door...
@Daniklein The situation is probably a bit more complicated that is stated here. All religious men and women take a vow of poverty and are required to hand over their earnings to the community. Religious communities are usually tax exempt (in the USA anyway) so they would not need to pay taxes on the earnings. I don't know why Jeanine would have been responsible for the taxes on her music while she was a Sister.
@catholicpriest1 hi my friend please watch zeitgeist the movie .... I will Beth my life that if the singing NON saw this movie ... her story would be Different
No! Philips records got by far most of the money. The convent maybe 5%.
One reads elsewhere that the Sisters were generous with her in later years on signed condition that she stopped denigrating the Church and the Convent.
Where did copyright and performance money go? There's a story going about that the Belgian artists' rights society collected for her more than enough to pay her taxes, but were too late in sending off the cheque...
we are dealing with an infantile view of the divine based on human trickery.
Awareness of something precious in the universe and a simple faith in the promotion of love and kindness is all that exists of god .
Even god does not exist in god.
Religion is the root of all evil.
Believing in jesus wont save you..Taking solace and joy from the divine in life.Living with a pure heart will bring you closer to the heaven you choose to imagine.
Please, let's get over the supposed injustice. This lady was a beautiful person with a beautiful voice. I hope to speak with her when my time comes and listen to her angelic voice in person :)
Even more...she fought for Catholic women's right to Birth Control and established a school for autistic children long before most in the world did the same... She was a good soul and human being as well as a great talent God Bestowed upon her.
I fully agree with zorbazig. They could have the very small decency to give her a receipt to prevent her to be claimed by the fisc. God has taken act and will get his claim against those nuns who lost her. It costs more in the other World than in ours, God doesnt treat things like humans! They are responsible for the life of misery she had afterward. Shame over them!
What this convent did to Soeur Sourire is a pure shame, and all these f....' bastards will have to plead for themselves in front of the living God ! And God will NOT listen to them, because they took the money and left the debts, because they assassinated a genius in the name of a hypocritical religion that has nothing to do with God !
She took a vow of poverty. The convent completely supports all of your needs while a nun but all of your income goes to the community and the communities works. If you bring in an income and then decide to leave and want the money back years later, the money isn't yours and it might already be gone. Used to build schools, hospitals, etc. If you leave right when you get the money, you might be able take it with you but not years later. That's the vow.
I know it, and it is true that it's important to hold vows, specially in front of God. But in that particular case, they could have been a little more "comprehensive"... The convent made a bunch of money with Soeur Sourire's famous songs... Was it correct to let her in her debts ? Charity, please !... By the way, I'm a christian believer ! ;-)
Who does know the story? For us the end is not written yet. We may think we know or want to believe we know how the story ends but we truly will not no until the end of our own story. Maybe it's not the story that's important but the message and the music.

hey it was her choice in everything she did. the government and the "nuns" had little to do with it. she donated the proceeds when she left. don't blame or condemn her, but most was her own decision. when does responibility come into play?
@coffeecub A receipt as a donation would have cleared this up in most countries. I suspect there is another truth behind the suicide. Manic depression: Bipolar issues. Perhaps schizophrenia. Big words??? Suicide is likely the largest single cause of death for people between 14 and 50. But what do I know? She was a fantastic musician, I enjoy her music now and I have never heard or met her live. I would try to find the beauty in this and as for the suicide, lets leave that to God!
Eine einmalige Stimme, die so klar und unschuldig ist...Hers was my first album, given to every kid in my French class by the pastor. She inspired me for years. Wish I knew she needed money - would have raised as much as I could for her!!
So true! God's love is unconditional. Love God, and His door is always open; whether in life or in death. Listening to her music calms and uplifts my soul. The only tragic thing is that she left us too soon.
Hell doesnt even exist and this is coming from a catholic gosh u guys... anyway who cares if she was a lesbian who cares if she commited suicide it was her choice and no one should judge her for that.. she was a great musician and has bought joy to many peoples lifes and thats what we should take note of.
anyway isnt God all about forgiveness and love not eternal damnation? srsly get a life ..if your gonna judge jeanine for nothing maybe you yourself should be committed to hell
i always feel a lot of solidarity for Soeur Sourire. Due to a twist of fate I was christened Dominique after her song. What happened to her after she left the convent is a tragedy. I hope that none will ever forget that she existed and how much joy she brought with her music. None should be punished because they seek freedom, which is what she did. And I am sure God will bless her because she seems never to have stopped believing in him.
May the Good Lord Blesses her soul for the good deeds she had done in her life and forgive her sins she had commited. Please judje according to her good deeds and not according to her sins.We all comitted sins. Let the person who have no sin cast the first stone .
The only one who needs forgiveness are the nuns of the convent and the recordcompagny. One of the reasons why she killed herself in the end is BECAUSE of them. They need forgiveness, not Jeannine. She suffered.

So Untrue. She entered the convent to become a nun, not a singer. The convent is where you give up your self and offer one self to God, not seek fame and fortune. The Nuns and the Church is not to blame here. Jeanine wanted fame and couldn't deal with it once she got it. She them committed suicide. She committed her self to hell, where no prayers can help her. So Sad.
oh please suicide doesn't commit you to hell..everyone has a right to end their life whenever they want..if God doesn't want them to kill themselves..he shouldn't allow them to get so depressed as to cause them to do it
She did NOT commit herself to hell. She was in need of help beyond what mortal persons could do for her. She's in heaven singing with all of the other angels.
@Daniklein Once again.. In most countries a receipt for the donation would solve the problem. If the Convent got the cash Churches are normally so embroiled in good works that the cash would have been eaten up. Most cleric's income is normally less than the cash minimums for tax purposes. There would have been a mental issue and much as you can't be blamed for Cancer, Heart deseas or stroke , mental ilness is something that needs work.
This story is true. A lot of other injustices happened to her after she left the convent. For the Dutch speaking audience I recommend the book "Soeur Sourire. Zie me graag" weitten by Luc Maddelein/Leen Van den Berg (ISBN 90 5826 330 4)

to serve God, what a business, it's consuming oneself to the bone

to live in solidarity among them consecrated

I add no critics, the Lord is my choice
