Actually, the centrifugal force of the rear tire spinning would have helped keep the contraption going straight and steady, have you ever tried to hold on to the two pegs of a spare bike tire and have someone spin the wheel, then try twisting around/maneuvering the spinning tire by the axle? It's hard, because the tire wants to stay straight.

@chrispomroy actually the tire does not want to stay straight but to rather spin in a circle. hold it with one hand on the axle and you'll see
