He's also arguably the most over-the-top character in a show that revels in its own over-the-topness and which is one of the few super robot shows that enjoys widespread popularity outside fans of the genre. I can't honestly dispute your claim that he's generic because I haven't watched more than a couple episodes of Mecha shows other than TTGL and Code Geass, but he seems fairly rare to me, at least in quality of execution, if not archetype. So yeah =D

@AttemptingReason He's more of a parody/throwback to older super robot shows. Hell, the entire series is eerily similar in both fashion and form to Gao Gai Gar. Another thing is, just 3 years before TTGL, the same group did Diebuster, a sequel to Gunbuster, where the main character warps herself from Pluto to another planet(forgot which specifically) and claims that "For the bond between Nono and Oneesama, distance no longer has meaning!".

@CaptainZETTA I can appreciate that. I think the key then is the show's popularity. A lot of people who've never seen TTLG's ancestors and inspirations watched it and liked it, so Kamina is their go-to character of that type. I'm interested in if you enjoyed the show or found it too derivative. I thought it was a blast and that the theme of constantly exceeding limitations was both relatable and hilariously appropriate for a show that scaled its battles up by a factor of 10 every few episodes!

TTGL is such an epic journey. It's one of my favorite of all time and it's really hard to find something that can help show it's name. You my friend have somehow managed to get to that level of awesomeness to relay it to others in such a cool way. I seriously got all chocked up(because I realized how much I missed this anime.) I'm so glad I found another talented AMV maker and I'm definitely SUBBING.

this is completely beautiful to look at whenever I watched this anime, I did it on the computer, and at some times the video would have such bad quality that I couldn't make out at all what was happening on the screen it was just a blur of pixels. When I watched this I was completely amazed of how it looked it was so glorious to watch and i had no idea how absolutely beautiful anime can be.
