  • I plead on behalf of the nation, freedom is golden, do not change our way of life, restore it to what it was, be difiant in the face of terrorism, by taking away freedoms, you change the value's of our nation, and by doing so succumb to the will of the enemy. Legistlative powers get abused by councils and police,so lets stop the change now, lets make Britain a free country again. We don't need ID cards or databases. Would your family want that? do you really want do that to Britain? please rethink

  • under tyranny, people over time will react and will fight for their freedoms, do we really have to go through all that again? learn from the past Gordon, is it really necessary to shred the constitution, and change our values, off the back of a few death caused by terrorism, when put in perspective more people die from falling down the stairs in this country? do you really want a police state? a country of government control? consider you might not be voted in next term, would your child approve

  • im glad 42 days did'nt get the the lords! Gordon 'unelected chickened out of an election' Brown talks of safe guards, well Mr Brown, where are the safe guards for our law abiding citizens from 'anti-terrorism' and 'serious organised crime' laws being used by police to harrass, search and arrest peaceful protesters, creating a climate of fear for those who wish to hold the government of the day to account, if you quash those freedoms, you have a people living under tyranny, and as history shows

  • Brown's justification of the 42 day detention by providing due judicial process etc is nothing more than clouding an unjust act through bearucratic fog. The measures he points to do nothing more than ensure that the i's are dotted and the t's are crossed and will not offer much protection to the imprisoned.

  • and secondly he said 'we are extending the freedom of the press by not taking away their powers of investigation'EXCUSE ME! how is that extending freedom of the press!?? its just an admittance that YOU WERE GOING TO STOP their investigative powers but didn't! haha Brown and Labour , you are a joke and against freedom and civil liberties! you just confirmed that by that very speech you made in response to this. VOTE LABOUR OUT!!!!!!!!!!

  • hang on , i watched Gordon Brown answering this and he said they were 'trying' to extend people's right to protest around west minster. Wait wasn't it Labour that stopped that in first place lol and in any event that wasn't the question Anita was asking, Anita is talking about people being ARRESTED under anti-terror laws for peaceful protests that have nothing to do with terrorism!

  • I'm turning 27 in 2009. Sadly I've learnt the most dangerous organisations are the ones preaching and enforcing. Ultimately consequences of how they behave inspire backlash, the shear brutality of which form the grounds for further disturbing measures. Smoke screened with righteous rhetoric.

  • Hello Anita! Erosion of Civil Liberties? Justice? What is that? Welcome to the ELECTIVE DICTATORSHIP run by the Arch 33 Degree Freemason GORGON BROWN. Also: Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 -Restriction on right to protest. ID Cards Detention up to 42 days [6 weeks - no charge] Access to Justice Act = Non Access to Justice/Denial of Legal Aid! ELECTIVE DICTATORSHIP!
  • it is our duty as free citizens to break any law that is unjust...when those ID cards come in...expect riots

  • damn right! we need more people like you around!

  • HERE HERE

Finally, I sure as hell hope Gordon Brown will see this let alone answer it,

THERE ARE MANY OF US LIKE ANITA out there.

And Brown really needs to know that.

    xxx

  • I wrote to my mp on this issue just before the vote in the commons. It did not surprise me that he slavishly followed the party line.Never mind the liberties protected by the brave men and women in the 2nd world war.Whats scary though is that there are a lot of people who feel it is a correct measure in the bogus war on terror.History should tell us all how civil liberties were stripped away in Germany in the 1930's all for the excuse of protecting people against the terrorists.

  • Fuck you Brown and every MP that voted the bill through, greater men and women than you will ever be fought and died for freedom and the pricnciple of Habeus Corpus and you've fucking sold it down the river you fucker! I'm thouroughly ashamed to call you Prime Minister of our country. Bastard!

  • The vote has gone through, as Tony Benn said "I never thought I would be in the House of Commons the day that they repealed the Magna Carta" , MPs chose political expediency over civil liberties and political principle.

But it's not over, the bill still has to go the Lords, and we still have to hold Gordon Brown to account, so please carry on voting for the video, just click the thumbs up sign next to the video on the Downing Street site.

    Thanks,

    Anita

  • Well Anita I hope that Gordon Brown will listen to your question and respond to it !

  • Remember the Birmingham 6? It took 16 YEARS for them to be proven innocent.

Also, if I have to prove who I am to get an ID card, why do I need an ID card to prove who I am?

  • Add the ID card scheme, and the government will have put in place all the apparatus for a highly effective repressive police state. Cameras recording our every move, mobile and email surveillance, and now this. I don't think the Labour Party are out to get me ... but what happens when someone comes to power who decides it is a good thing to suppress opposition? (history shows that this happens in every country sooner or later) Gordon Brown and Blair will have made their job trivially easy.

  • I agree that this question needs to be addressed. I dont see what Gordon is trying to achieve by eroding our civil liberties, as citizens of the UK we nee dto stand up, we cant allow the Government to take away our cherished values of justice, and the so called 42 day extension is the opposite of justice, whats disturbing is that a poll claimined most people supported this, government propoganda at work. And Labour is the leftist government, even the Conservative leader is aopposed to this.

  • I couldn't agree more Anita. It is the use of fear to justify this erosion of liberty that deeply concerns me. Is it our alliance with the US and the adoption of their values and culture that makes this seem acceptable?

  • I just clicked on the green 'thumbs up' sign next to this video on the downing street youtube page. Is that all I need to do to vote this as the best video in the 'Ask the PM' competition?

  • How much do you all want to bet that regardless of how many votes this video gets, Brown will not answer it. OR he'll do the usual politician thing of answering the wrong question.

This is a serious issue - locking someone up for 42 days without telling them what they've done is outrageous - is the government just going to keep on raising the limit?

  • Hi thanks for the video

have you seen the documentary Taking Liberties? I think you can get it off amazon for about a fiver if you haven't

I asked my MP about this at a meeting and he said the reason he voted in favour of 42 days was "because I couldn't get 90" !!!! If you want to hear more about that please check out my video "questioning my MP tom harris on his voting record"

    love love love love love

  • Good question!

  • I totally agree with you Anita. I am also very concerned about the erosion of our basic civil rigts. I hope Gordon Brown will reply to your question.

  • Fantastic question which Mr Brown must answer before he gets my vote. Well put Anita

  • hi Anita - thanks for that - very well phrased and a question that needs to be asked

  • One of the most important contemporary questions, concerning liberty, with which we are faced as a nation.

I commend your noble endeavour and have voted for your video to be brought before the PM.

  • I've written to my MP too (Andrew Slaughter), and after months of pestering i finally got a reply saying he was 'reading up' on the issue before deciding (more likely seeing how hard the Labour whips come down on his ass). I'd like to suggest he browse the Magna Carta - the prose is a bit turgid, but the ideas are pretty enduring.

  • btvsk8 asking brown to read the Magna Carta is asking to much of him, he did not even read the eu constitution and past it with out asking the people of the uk and he did so with out a care in the world he just dose what hes told by his master in brussels.

  • As Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize Winner has commented

"The best way to combat terrorism is by maintaining and strengthening the freedoms that terrorism seeks to destroy. The protection of those freedoms will not be advanced by increasing the period in which terrorism suspects can be held without charge"

  • Thanks for the comments, this is the first time I have posted a video on youtube, but I feel so strongly about this that I wanted to do something.

In reply to Martynjones111, extending the period for which you can detain people before charging them, or curtailing other civil liberties in the name of 'protecting people'is not the way forward. Not only are such changes ineffective but at worst they can act to radicalise popel and act as a recruitment tool for terrorist organisations.

  • agree with this wholeheartedly. Bit by bit our rights our being stripped away under the guise of the threat of terrorism. Governments protecting or restricting its citizens should never be confused.

  • i couldn't agree more with anita and with evian54321. can't wait to see what the PM makes of this

  • this is probably the only articulate question i've seen posted to the PM. The other questions are random ill-informed garbage posted by youtube "dossers" who know nothing about politics, just posting a video because they're "youtube dossers." Its a travesty that this only has 100 views in 4 days whereas the garbage the dossers post has 1000's of hits after just 24hours. it just goes to show that gordon brown is wasting his time with a)young people & b) young people on youtube.

  • You will have know civil liberities when you have been blown up in a tube station or burnt to death by a plane flying into your place of birth. The people that have been detained have all shown great interest in extremism and MI5 has tailed these people months prior to there imprisonment. If these people were left to there own devices and kills people in terrorist acts people like you would be complaining that enough wasn't done. What do you suggest is done to protect or lives?

  • "The people that have been detained have all shown great interest in extremism and MI5 has tailed these people months prior to there imprisonment"... really? If that were true there would be enough evidence to charge them for a crime. Detention without charge involves locking people up without evidence. That means they could come for you or me. How would your employer/family respond to that? Are you willing to be banged up for 6 weeks?

  • Well done anitad14, a good question and I hope you get a response. I'm flabbergasted at the prospect of having to carry my 'papers' and be frisked by a black ski masked state police thug for the crime of walking down the street. I suspect Gordon and his superiors will have scant regard for you, your question and any other citizen who wishes to regain their freedom. All the best.
