when you do a hopstep or a step back and you land simultaneously with both feet, then you can choose which is your pivot foot. however if you land on one foot then whatever foot that is, thats automatically your pivot foot. he landed on his left then his right. so by definition of the rules his left was his pivot. traveling occurs when a player lifts there pivot foot. argue that. call me a hater all you want or that im dumb but its written in the NBA rules which i have read.

@thechido but there also a definition of good sense, in a game if u look closely it's nearly impossible to land at the exactly same time, in normal pace u barely see the difference so it's considered simultaneously foot land. If u look at the closer details all plays would have something illegal. It's a legal play since the time between the foot landing is almost invisible in normal motion. Everyone here just saw a travel cauz it was in slow motion.

@vietiscool Nah first of all for it to be a hop step, Kobe has to land on both feet at once. Even at normal speed you can see that Kobe steps back and lands left foot, then right foot. Let's say he landed both at once.. since he dribbled, picked up his dribble then stepped back, he has no pivot foot. He would have to pick up his dribble mid-air after pushing off his foot for the stepback to have a pivot.. but here he dribbled, picked it up, then pushed back. After that, he shuffled for a travel

Yes, it was a travel because he didn't land both feet (not a hop step). But after actual hop steps you still have a pivot foot, which is why people do that on layups. Hop step, then a step (pivot), then they jump off that leg
