Technically this isn't Hydroponic, at least not in the greater sense. What she doesn't tell you is she puts the seeds in peat moss wrapped in a biodegradable cardboard. The only thing she is doing, is giving it water, and florescent lights. The idea behind Hydroponics is not to use soil at all, rather using a medium such as rockwool which has no nutrients in it. You have to use liquid nutrients (some times solid that can be turned into a aqueous solution.)
@jws54 It depends on what you want to do. If you're just looking to grow plants, hybids are better a lot of times. (No, hybrid does not equal GMO either because I know someone will cry about that). Hybrids are normally bred to be disease resistant and generally hardier. However, if you want to save seeds, then you'll need Heirlooms because Hybrids often do not produce true to themselves. As far as taste goes, it doesn't matter. I've grown both, and there are good tasting plants from either side
Loved the ideas...As teachers of science and math we wanted to express our thanks. I personally I have a new use for my 60 gallon fish tank that I have been holding onto since my UCLA college days. We're quite sure that classroom enthusiasm should peak 3x. By the way how did you setup the the container trays so that the water flows back into the fish tank? We can see the holes drilled for the tubing to enter.
Nice little "factory" you have setup for starting seeds. But I also would suggest that you use black tubing and dark colored totes or reservoirs to help prevent algae growth.
Good thing she has a nice rack, because she has some bad advice about hydroponics. Light + water = algae=bad. Use Black totes for your reservoir. Roots won't grow in light--i.e. light pruning. Could be I getting what she is trying to accomplish, but it seems like she doesn't really understand much about hydrponics.
@jws54 Are there any organizations defying this or fighting this? I want to be with the opposition. I'm working feverishly at getting off the grid...for good...food, water, power....maybe an internet connection but that's it. Your thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

Is that really crossed linked polyethylene? It looks like regular vinyl tubing. I work with PEX, and it does not look like that, I have worked with white, red and blue colors, but never a clear one. If it is PEX, please let me know the maker. PEX is a great piping, but does not do well in UV light. Thanks for your time in advance.
I'm working on a system right now, trying to start a small hydroponic veggie business. Do you have a splitter off of the main pump inlet for each bin or do they gravity feed from top to bottom from one main line?
I'll probably use rockwool starter cubes instead of peat
have you considered covering the top of the bins with clear plastic to increase humidity and germination?
Hello. Great videos. Very inspiring and education. Question: What is the ROI on this system? I have been thinking about doing something more elaborate than what I have today which is two tube lights that I raise on top of books when my seedlings grow. In Minnesota, we have the harsh winter too where I need to get ahead of the spring if I want to save a lot of money through using seeds rather than buying plants.
It's awesome to see this, as I already use my aquarium waste water to water my plants! The waste water is rich in nutrients that plants love, and I was able to produce some of the best tomatoes I have ever had last year. I'm going to set one or two of these up in my garage with some fish and see what I can get done! Might even be able to sell some seedlings like you've been doing! $1400 for 700 seedlings every 3 weeks is amazing!
some people don't have access to sunlight at all seasons. I live in ny, i never see the sun in winter or summer because of my homeplacement. If I could, I would be farming in all sunlight, but i live in city :(
It looks as though she is using jiffa plugs to start her seedlings off but generally they just contain peat and have no realy nutrient value.
Is she adding a nutrient to this "fish" tank?
Is se also saying that she only turns on the hydro for one hour a day and it pumps water round the system twice in that time. drip feeding them twice in an hour is she saying?
Why use the 12/12 flowing lighting? Shouldn't she be using 16-24 hours ?
Hydroponics will work anywhere! Grow hydroponics indoors, and you can have an entire garden inside, free from extreme heat or cold, free from wind or hail. No bugs. No soil born diseases. No weeds.
The woman in this video is growing seedlings to be transplanted into soil, but with some modifications, the same system could grow full sized adult crops with incredible yields and almost no hard work.
So many things going through my mind. But If we had 10,000 of her we could end world wars and world hunger, all available at your local hardware store.
Seriously I wonder why this sort of info isn't passed around to poor countries. But i'm thinking if they started setting this up, the government would force them to grow cash crops to be exported to richer countries. which is what's happening right now.
Great system! My only critique would be to keep your nutrient solution in something that keeps dark inside like a rubbermaid container and using dark hoses. (sunlight induces unwanted algie and bacteria growth). Georgeous set-up!
You might be able to use hydrogen peroxide for bacteria control also helps with fertilization. Silver also destroys bacteria/prevents them from growing/starting so you will never need to change any filter for that BUT I don't know how safe silver is for plants. Algae farms for growing blue green algae purposely restrict the light & oxygen in tubes to make it grow faster.. so again hydrogen peroxide may be key here. I don't see much need for the gallon tank if oxygen is constant like fish tanks.
Okay, what are the clamps doing? Are you using Jiffy-7 peat pellets? Are you using nutrients in the water? How are you controlling the level of the water in the plastic tanks? Are the plastic tubes going to the end of containers pierced with holes. Would be nice to have better shots of inside the containers. Not sure if this a hydroponic system or just a fancy watering system with some lights. Still a nice setup.
@elreservista You can still get bugs (esp. gnats) if ur setup is too moist. If u have too much moisture, gnats will attract and breed and can destroy your roots esp in seedlings.
Can you make a parts list of what all is needed to set asystem up like this. Very interested in building one t would be greatly apperciated also if you could give some directions in the setup also
Very Nice Setup. I did try once about 20 years ago to grow Hydroponic lettuce and Tomatoe's but it didn't last me long lol!. i like to get into the compost hands on and then spend an hour aday cleaning it out of my finger nail's (ouch!). i have a fresh water stream in my field's and it's fast flowing. so we grow water crest and the duck's love it. thank's for sharing with us. ;-)
Enjoy your videos. Can you please elaborate on your watering system. Do you have holes in the tubing? How do you route the water from tray to tray? Thanks
How do you handle those jiffy things the seeds in mine just rot because they are either waterlogged or too dry. It is hard to get the balance for them right.
Thanks. Yes, it is humid here when it warms up. This is around 50% or so (South Carolina). This is why I don't have to use water in my styrofoam chick incubator in the spring. Maybe I will try your newspaper pot idea but, make them smaller to start out seeds.
@GardenGirltv would it be possible for you to do a step by step guide on how to build the hydroponic system? i would be very interested. thanks oh and i love your personality..
to me thats not realty hydroponic. it is a automatic watering system. there is no nutrient solution is there? it looks like your using peat pellets for seedling media which would be considered a soil base. but it is a good idea for what you use it for . could you,or have you used it for cuttings? also how does it drain from tray to tray (top to bottom) or individual trays each have a drain?
Thanks for the video, I've been building a system like that for a couple years now. Very Functional, but, after seeing yours, I'm going to go ahead and convert it for Seed Starting. Question tho... What was your overall success rate on seeds actually sprouting?
what type of hydroponic system do you have working for you? And, how do you use the jiffy pelets inconection with the system? other hydroponic systems want you to put the seeds right in the rocks, instead of puting the jiffy pelets on top could you explain to me how you worked it that you can use the jiffy peltes on top or can you suggest a book I could get to explain it to me. I would love to find out how I can have as may seedlings as you have. thanks :)
I always had problems with those peat self expanding pots. My seeds rot. Always too wet or too dry. I use cardboard tubes with the ends closed off on the bottom like a box and filled with my favorite dirt.
I was thinking of starting an aqua/hydroponics system using used 55 gal barrels cut length wise but I am looking for more information. Also what types of meat fish would you recomend for central texas area. I was thinking tilapia but not sure what the laws are on them. Any and all help would be appreciated.
Do they grow and produce okay? I've had terrible trouble growing corn, if you can transplant and get a decent harvest that would make things much easier.
I have learnt so much from you and I will try the hydroponics soon. I hope my hydroponics garden works as well as yours. Thanks for the video. do you use a heater in your room to make sure the plants are in an area that is 70 to 80 degress? It gets really cold in canada and the ice frezzes to your window on the inside. So I have to get a heater really soon.
Great video! You've made it all perfectly clear. I gave it five stars & I'm going to start sharing it. Thanks a lot. We're planning to get started with this soon.
I'm a aquaculture lover also and is there a better way to spend winter days, than gardening inside with hydro-systems? Um, I don't think so. I wanted to see the fishes... ah well, next time maybe. I'm going to guess gold fish or some other surface breather? Do you do your own water quality tests and if so, what kits are you using? People may be interested in water chemistry... nitrates/nitrites yadda yadda.. love YOU! Ah, sniff that 02 enriched air.
Great video. It still stumps me on it, and I've seen two videos on it. Of course if I did the research I'd be good. Instead, I'll remain in awe, as usual, of Patti and all she does!
Well the floresent bulbs arent usually as bad as the regular lamp bulbs. I dont think it would raise it that much. I have a couple of grow lights for my small indoor garden and I didnt really see a difference. But she has a lot going there so it may be more.
I have the same system going and it increases my electricty bill by about 20.00 more a month. Your electricty bill will go up more depending on what type of grow lights you use. my setup cost me about 500.00, and about 20-40 more a month for electity dirt lights. (this is in canadian money)
thanks for introducing me to black aztec corn :)

It's an Aquaponic system. It runs on fish poop. Google Aquaponics. You can build one with anything from an old toilet to a super tanker.
Just look at a natural pond with water, fish and cat tails growing. The cat tails filter out the fish waste and grow well.
It will work with rice planted in gravel and a big, big fish tank packed with cat fish. Cycle about every 6 hours.

Hydronutes 2 years ago
Lets fill in the parts about explaining the system.
Here is my guess:
The fish is given fish food and his waste is pumped to the gravel in the trays.
The gravel filters and holds processes that convert ammonia to nitrates and the plant or seeds use the nitrates.
The water comes in above the gravel one or all the time. All the time may be too much.
The seed trays in the peat moss starters sit in the bins and get wet.

My system only waters the plants for about an hour each day. That may be too much if the area is humid.
They need to dry out almost completely before the water cycles again.
You may have jiffy pots that have a bacteria in it that is too hardy also.. I have found the seeds do okay just in the gravel too.

to me thats not realty hydroponic. it is a automatic watering system. there is no nutrient solution is there? it looks like your using peat pellets for seedling media which would be considered a soil base. but it is a good idea for what you use it for . could you,or have you used it for cuttings? also how does it drain from tray to tray (top to bottom) or individual trays each have a drain?

the fish tank provides nitrogen from the fish waste that's why the fish tank is in the system

No its not!!!
Theres not even fish in there SMART ONE!!

Thanks for the video, I've been building a system like that for a couple years now. Very Functional, but, after seeing yours, I'm going to go ahead and convert it for Seed Starting. Question tho... What was your overall success rate on seeds actually sprouting?
Thanks in advance.

Wow! I am ready to go to Brazil for my initial training in permaculture and here I find your urban one. Very informative, congratulations!

This is awesome Patti! How does the water in the tubing drain into the plastic tubs? Did you puncture the tubing within the boxes?
Thanks!

This is so well done. Thanks for your clear explanations Patty. I have courage to try now.

what type of hydroponic system do you have working for you? And, how do you use the jiffy pelets inconection with the system? other hydroponic systems want you to put the seeds right in the rocks, instead of puting the jiffy pelets on top could you explain to me how you worked it that you can use the jiffy peltes on top or can you suggest a book I could get to explain it to me. I would love to find out how I can have as may seedlings as you have. thanks :)

I just put the pellets into the gravel. It is easier for transplanting to just pull the pellet out and re pot or whatever.
In my system they go into newspaper pots or the garden. Check out my newspaper pot video.

Tilapia would be best. There are some good farms in Florida I think.

Patti, I had read that corn doesn't transplant well. Do you do something special for that?
pattyloof 3 years ago
I have transplanted Corn seedlings aslong as you have them growing in a soil plug to start with.
karylchase 3 years ago
Do they grow and produce okay? I've had terrible trouble growing corn, if you can transplant and get a decent harvest that would make things much easier.
pattyloof 3 years ago
Soil plug is the key. I have had great years and so so years with corn. It is tough to grow sometimes.
GardenGirltv 3 years ago
Thank you! I've never used soil plugs, I'll have to try them.

looks like a good system

are you using EM-1 to increase germination rates?

I have learnt so much from you and I will try the hydroponics soon. I hope my hydroponics garden works as well as yours. Thanks for the video. do you use a heater in your room to make sure the plants are in an area that is 70 to 80 degress? It gets really cold in canada and the ice frezzes to your window on the inside. So I have to get a heater really soon.
crewlla 3 years ago
I don't use a heater, but the building is kept above freezing for plumbing reasons.

Great video! You've made it all perfectly clear. I gave it five stars & I'm going to start sharing it. Thanks a lot. We're planning to get started with this soon.

Nice to see your videos as always Patti!

Make an instructables. This was an awesome episode. Thanks. I'm definitely going to set up this system when I get my own place.

Great video. It still stumps me on it, and I've seen two videos on it. Of course if I did the research I'd be good. Instead, I'll remain in awe, as usual, of Patti and all she does!

I have a question: Doesnt this significantly increase your electric bill?? Anybody?
roullettechick 3 years ago
Well the floresent bulbs arent usually as bad as the regular lamp bulbs. I dont think it would raise it that much. I have a couple of grow lights for my small indoor garden and I didnt really see a difference. But she has a lot going there so it may be more.
RedWhiteandBetrayed 3 years ago
I have the same system going and it increases my electricty bill by about 20.00 more a month. Your electricty bill will go up more depending on what type of grow lights you use. my setup cost me about 500.00, and about 20-40 more a month for electity dirt lights. (this is in canadian money)
crewlla 3 years ago
Dude, she's getting 1400$ per batch back. So I'm pretty sure the bills don't bother her.
