Saw this concert (the recording he's using) when she did it in NY. 1st row dead center. When she sang this song it was so powerful that it is hard to describe. Unfortunately no recording on earth really captures LuPone like a live performance. She is truly a force of nature.
straight tones into vibrato is not hard lol, and i dont get why everyone looooves her voice. i mean i looove her, but her voice is not what it used to be... :/ sorry
OMG! Seth, I'm just seeing your page here for the first time and I'm tripping out about how we share an obsession over so many of the same exact details and nuances of her singing! Juilliard uses the Skinner method for voice and diction training - "V" is a voiced consonant so it makes sense that she would sing through to the last utterance of "alive". IMHO as a singer and teacher is the "through" and you" is not head voice - she places very forward in the mask to keep it all in line.
I really enjoy listening to anyone who is completely obsessed with any subject and knows it cold. I have no real interest in the material he deconstructs, but I love hearing him doing it! Not to denigrate Ms. Lupone, she is obviously the best at what she does, but the musical genre doesn't do much for me.
You know Patti was criticized mercilessly about her not being articulate enough in her debut as Evita so some people have said that her overenunciating everything is just a big f'you to all her past critics.
Her turn as Leocadja Begbick in the LA Opera production of "Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny" was absolutely amazing; perfect balance between chest and head voice, and skillful navigation of the passagio.
hi Seth - I am surprised that you are not bothered by the many out of tune notes....especially in the sondheim...are they not so important in a live broadway performance?
they distracted me...but of course what A MAGNIFICENT voice it is.
i have also worked with Patti but not in a musical capacity. i was her dresser in London on 'Sunset B'. As i dressed her each night she used to sing thro most of Act 1 and believe me witnessing that voice so close up with such power and passion was something else!!! She is a real STAR !!! Seth, i think you are too!
Recordings of Patti's cover of "Being Alive" can be found on her album 'Patti LuPone Live' and on the soundtrack recording of 'Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall'. The song cannot be found on her album 'Patti LuPone at Les Mouches' or any of her other recordings. However, since singing it in 'Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall', it has become a fixture in her concerts.
As a side note from the Patti extra emphasis. DIdn't she get a lot of crap in the 80's for NOT having dicition. Maybe she got overtly dramatic with her diciton. Just a thought.... discuss
placement basically means where you're singing from. you can belt in the chest voice which is more pressed in the throat, or you can, i dont know, float (for the lack of a better word) in the head voice. it takes a lot of training to get the placement patti lupone has lol
I really want to get Lupone's verson of "Come to the supermarket..." but I can't find it anywhere to download. And I've also looked for Live in various stores. Anyone know where I can get it?
Thanks for posting this! I'm like in love with Patti LuPone and i always love noticing the over-enunciation in Being Alive! And I now love "supermarket" because of this! Thanks so much! I'm a huge fan of yours!
I teach high school English, and I have a very hard time talking about the literature when I'd rather talk about Patti Lupone. I love that you do this and post these videos so that I can PROVE to my students that I am neither wrong about Patti's divinity nor alone in my near insane obsession with her. Thank you, thank you, thank you, and let's hang out if you're even in San Francisco!
I think I've given you at least 1000 views on this video. I'm listening to Patti LuPone Live now, actually, in anticipation of the Gypsy recording that is now in the mail on its way to my house. Why did I wait so long to pre-order from Amazon?!
YES!!!! I for one want to be reincarnated either as one syllable (GEN) in "Eva's Final Broadcast," "I want to tell the people of Ar-GEN- tina . . ." or as (yes, this is obvious, but true, nonetheless) the bridge (is this the right term -- I'm not a musician) in "Dream," "But the tigers . . . SHAME-UH!" There is no one better!
May I point out, viewers, that if you enjoy watching Seth and his um...obsessions...you really ought to buy his novel 'Broadway Nights.' As funny, as madcap, as smart, as full of delight as Seth on video, in convenient paperback form. Just a treasure, like the man himself.
a 26 yearold gay law student from Washington State thinks you are a God, I wish I could sit and listen to Patti with you and you can explain to me all of her little tricks and intricate details and I will explain to you how to write a contract that you can void even if you sign it :) :) :) LOVE YOU and keep it coming!!!!!!!!!!!
Isn't this guy the vocal coach on Legally Blonde the Musical on MTV ? Anyway, he's really entertaining and he really knows why he's talking about. Love the LuPone <3
omigosh i love this!! lol what's hilarious is that i do this ALL the time! haha i always play my fav parts over and over and like move my hands like that lol and i literally say "I'm obsessed with that!!" lol this video rocks. and so does Patti and Seth lol
I'm so glad that I found this video right after having seen her singing this on the Sondheim Celebration DVD for the first time today. I was soooo blown away!
it's funny my friend Edric and I have discussed her exquisite and unique techniques, especially the emphasized consanants followed by the "-uh" at the end and my personal favorite: the held note where vibratto comes into play 2 or 3 beats into it, and usually on the on beat... marvelous
Wonderful - this is the first video of Seth's I've watched, but I'm about to go through them all.
I've attached a vid of Patti performing "Being Alive". Viewers should note that the attached "live" performance likely differs from the recording used by Seth - but after listening to Seth it's great to watch again.
I actually think that this version of "Being Alive" (compared to the one she did at Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall) is even better, even though the latter is INCREDIBLE!
Again, you make me happy. Thank you. It's not very easy. ♥
Aaah, I love Patti LuPone so much!! I'm so glad you've done her! Ach, her belting is just phenomenal. I literally have the same reactions to her singing as you. I have to play certain bits over and over again just because they're so mind blowing! Aaaah, ah-maaaaaaa-zing!
I was hoping you'd eventually do some Patti -- aside from the hilarious near-miss arm hook from the Evita Tony performance!
