Saw this concert (the recording he's using) when she did it in NY. 1st row dead center. When she sang this song it was so powerful that it is hard to describe. Unfortunately no recording on earth really captures LuPone like a live performance. She is truly a force of nature.

OMG! Seth, I'm just seeing your page here for the first time and I'm tripping out about how we share an obsession over so many of the same exact details and nuances of her singing! Juilliard uses the Skinner method for voice and diction training - "V" is a voiced consonant so it makes sense that she would sing through to the last utterance of "alive". IMHO as a singer and teacher is the "through" and you" is not head voice - she places very forward in the mask to keep it all in line.

I really enjoy listening to anyone who is completely obsessed with any subject and knows it cold. I have no real interest in the material he deconstructs, but I love hearing him doing it! Not to denigrate Ms. Lupone, she is obviously the best at what she does, but the musical genre doesn't do much for me.

i have also worked with Patti but not in a musical capacity. i was her dresser in London on 'Sunset B'. As i dressed her each night she used to sing thro most of Act 1 and believe me witnessing that voice so close up with such power and passion was something else!!! She is a real STAR !!! Can you explain what placement is? You say it a lot but I don't really get it.

placement basically means where you're singing from. you can belt in the chest voice which is more pressed in the throat, or you can, i dont know, float (for the lack of a better word) in the head voice. it takes a lot of training to get the placement patti lupone has lol

it's funny my friend Edric and I have discussed her exquisite and unique techniques, especially the emphasized consanants followed by the "-uh" at the end and my personal favorite: the held note where vibratto comes into play 2 or 3 beats into it, and usually on the on beat... marvelous

I was hoping you'd eventually do some Patti -- aside from the hilarious near-miss arm hook from the Evita Tony performance! One of my favorite things, though, about Patti's "Being Alive" is the fact that she doesn't speed up the music while she holds "aliiiiive" (just before the last verse & at the very end). So many people do, and it just sounds like they don't have enough breath to get thru it. Not only that, but then she launches into the last verse without taking a breath! LOVE it!!!
