Alot of people didn't want Harry to do these standards at the time but he insisted. In the end, I am so glad he did them otherwise I personally might not have ever heard many of them. This really is his type of music oddly enough.
My Mum played harry all the time when I was growing up........the world is a little darker for his passing all those years ago. Playing his songs is like creating a little bit of magic.
I don't understand why this album [Schmilsson in the Night] and the follow up, were not mentioned in the otherwise excellent documentary on BBC1, last night. Superb arangements by the maestro, Gordon Jenkins.
@Philpotts24 I believe it was mentioned, in disgust, by his producer who expected Harry to kick on from Nilsson Schmilsson. W\hat a talent, what a waste in many ways. Sad.
I too just finished watching the documenatry on Netfkix.I bought the album,Schmilsson in the Night when it was released in 1973 and it has held up as a masterpiece.
Great Singer and song writer. Im just now realizing all the great songs that Harry wrote and sang. I remember them, I just didn't put the face to the music. The documentary on netflix was great. Wish I could have met Harry.
I was on "D"shift ambulances at welford road leicester.this song still brings a tear to my eyes, used to listen to it with the two barrys!barry sanderson and barry johnson, really lovely song.Sung by a great singer.
A classic Irving Berlin tune...sung in an excellent manner! Harry's LP is a classic, too...Bless him and the late Gordon Jenkins for even doing this album in the Rockin' 70's :)
I bought A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the NIght in Arizona in 1974, but how would you find it now - good question. Until I heard him sing all the standards, I didn't appreciate the true character of his voice. Utterly wonderful...
I was amazed that Harry was from Brooklyn. Many people thought that he was English. His mother dragged him across the country as a child, settling in a dumpy apartment near Brewery Row in Brooklyn. He was the only White kid in his school and was repeatedly beaten because of it. "I know why the caged bird sings"...Maya Angelou
does anyone know how to get a hold of A Little Touch of Schmillson in the Night II? it was only produced in Britain and, as far as I can tell, never sold in the states.
I always remember my dad having "A Touch Of Smilsson" on a 8 track player in an old ford Zephyr in the early 70's , i would have been about 6-7 at the time, even from an early age i found myself hooked on this guy and still play is music often, R.I.P Harry.
ooooo.... This is one of my fav standards (Fisherman's Wife got me on to it as a kid, lame, but there it is), and Nilsson is my FAAAAAAAAAAAV songwriter (I am a crappy songwriter, but, again, there it is), and I luvs this cover and HAD NEVER HEARD IT BEFORE!!! Who says youtube is soulless???
Oh, how I miss Harry. He was so childlike and innocent in his music. From the songs that he wrote and the ones that he sang that were written by others, they all made me either cry or smile, or a bit of both. Rest In Peace, beautiful soul. Thanks for all the wonderful music and memories. Too bad you died so young. God Bless You. They dont make them like him anymore. I hope that Arrow is with you up in heaven.
I recently tried hunting down what was (in my opinion) the best version of this...it's a standard rom the early 30's I think...and it was between Nillson's version, and Art Garfunkel's...but I've got to say, for clarity and sheer beauty...Harry, you've done it.
distracting flickering video, the untraditional melody makes it tough to listen to. haven't found a version of this on you tube I liked. my quest ends here, so I'm posting.
The verse most singers omit is pure genius with a subtle key change that made it one of the hardest pieces of music to learn. But then Irwin Berlin was pure genius. A great great tune.
One of the most simple, yet beautiful songs I've ever heard. I remember it in the begining of the movie The Great Gatsby, which came out in 1971. Its beauty has never left me, and I'm glad I found this version - thank you Harry, wherever you are - in music heaven, I hope.
what a doll. what a sweet voice and brilliant musician. thank you for posting. beautiful images and video work. harry harry harry harry.... what are WE doing with you? of course he would do the less well known berlin intro (learned something! thanks!) ... one example of his brilliance...
'A little touch...' has been re-released with added tracks that were cut from the original....it's a gem. We truly lost a treasure when we lost Harry.
Thank you ever so much for posting this! I love this song so much and always sang it to my daughter when she was a baby. She seemed to like this song best out of all I sang to her
Thanks for this! I remember this song from "The Great Gatsby" movie (1974). That arrangement would break God's heart!!! This is beautiful, too. Thank you !!!!
I remember it from Gatsby too. I bought the VHS video and it's not used, there's some substitute instrumental, so disappointing. It's about royalties and ownership issues I think.
OK, I just broke up with my sweetheart after 10 yrs. and I hear this. UGH! This is the most beautiful version of this song that I have ever heard. Harry knew how to sing a ballad.

@TheMadSyrupMaker "A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night"...a play on the words of Shakespeare, Henry V, Act 4 Prologue:
That every wretch, pining and pale before,
Beholding him, plucks comfort from his looks;
A largess universal, like the sun,
His liberal eye doth give to every one,
Thawing cold fear, that mean and gentle all
Behold, as may unworthiness define,
A little touch of Harry in the night.

this isnt a special begining its the real Irving Berlin lyrics to the song,
Gone is the romance that was so divine.
'Tis broken and cannot be mended
You must go your way,
And I must go mine.
But now that our love dreams have ended...
What'll I do
When you are far away
And I am blue
What'll I do?
