  • I am crying This song holds so many memories....thank you for this exquisite post

  • Wonderful song by Irving Berlin, and sungs so beautifully and heartfelt by Harry! Thank ya, Harry!

  • wow never heard this before compared to I cant live weird

  • Thank you Blue Knight.

  • Was this a troubled Man may be unlucky in love ? very beautiful singing voice ,

  • Alot of people didn't want Harry to do these standards at the time but he insisted. In the end, I am so glad he did them otherwise I personally might not have ever heard many of them. This really is his type of music oddly enough.

  • ive ben thinking about nyc and medtating, now i open this up and the city is the first thing I see, amazing!

  • It just reminds me of Happier times

  • My Mum played harry all the time when I was growing up........the world is a little darker for his passing all those years ago. Playing his songs is like creating a little bit of magic.

  • What a beautiful song of I think the 1920's,and sung by Harry Nilsson is pure magic. Thanks a lot.

  • I don't understand why this album [Schmilsson in the Night] and the follow up, were not mentioned in the otherwise excellent documentary on BBC1, last night. Superb arangements by the maestro, Gordon Jenkins.

  • @Philpotts24 edited out for time

  • @Philpotts24 I believe it was mentioned, in disgust, by his producer who expected Harry to kick on from Nilsson Schmilsson. W\hat a talent, what a waste in many ways. Sad.

  • An excellent documentary just this minute ended on BBC TV. It was called: IMAGINE... HARRY NILSSON: THE MISSING BEATLE. A must-see for all fans.

  • 1:50 = dirk nowitski

  • What a beautiful song !

    Gret ¨

thank you very much for sharing

    SMILES

    6******

  • He died of heart failure in 1994, a year after suffering a massive heart attack

  • Can anyone tell me how Harry died?

  • Beautiful job on a beautiful song!!!!!!

  • I too just finished watching the documenatry on Netfkix.I bought the album,Schmilsson in the Night when it was released in 1973 and it has held up as a masterpiece.

  • divine....

  • Great Singer and song writer. Im just now realizing all the great songs that Harry wrote and sang. I remember them, I just didn't put the face to the music. The documentary on netflix was great. Wish I could have met Harry.

  • @Eugene9077 What exactly was the documentary called? It sounds interesting.

  • Oh, the control! I swear he had four lungs. Wonderful.

  • harry had savior faire.

  • Wonderful, beautiful, love it!!!!

  • Great quality sound!

I love this album - in my top 20 :)

  • I was on "D"shift ambulances at welford road leicester.this song still brings a tear to my eyes, used to listen to it with the two barrys!barry sanderson and barry johnson, really lovely song.Sung by a great singer.

  • A classic Irving Berlin tune...sung in an excellent manner! Harry's LP is a classic, too...Bless him and the late Gordon Jenkins for even doing this album in the Rockin' 70's :)

  • We were so lucky to have him...but "gone to soon"

thanks for the memories Harry !

  • Harry and Irving, what a fab combo

  • what else can you say, beautiful song, rip harrry

  • This is what music sounds like in Heaven....

  • @terrryc

aw, that made me tear up. I'm sure they're listening to him there.

  • This album and its CD version appear with regularity on eBay. There shouldn't be any difficulty in finding it. It's worth the effort.

  • 心の中に何時も一緒に居ます。魂と成りて

  • I bought A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the NIght in Arizona in 1974, but how would you find it now - good question. Until I heard him sing all the standards, I didn't appreciate the true character of his voice. Utterly wonderful...

  • @cliftongal51 I think you can find it on Amazon. Beautiful song.

  • @cliftongal51 Amazon I bought the album in July. I think it was $9.95.. enjoy !

  • I love this in The Great Gatsby, song is perfect for the theme. So lovely.

  • I was amazed that Harry was from Brooklyn. Many people thought that he was English. His mother dragged him across the country as a child, settling in a dumpy apartment near Brewery Row in Brooklyn. He was the only White kid in his school and was repeatedly beaten because of it. "I know why the caged bird sings"...Maya Angelou

  • " A Little Touch..." was sold here, I believe I had a copy.

It knocked my socks off first time I heard this.

  • does anyone know how to get a hold of A Little Touch of Schmillson in the Night II? it was only produced in Britain and, as far as I can tell, never sold in the states.

  • @greensmyth I had this album, many years ago. I had gotten it through Columbia House I believe. 'Twas a long time ago :)

  • I always remember my dad having "A Touch Of Smilsson" on a 8 track player in an old ford Zephyr in the early 70's , i would have been about 6-7 at the time, even from an early age i found myself hooked on this guy and still play is music often, R.I.P Harry.

  • I believe this album is named, "Nilsson, a touch of Smilsson".

  • @TheMadSyrupMaker "Nilsson, a little touch of Schmilsson", that's better.

  • @TheMadSyrupMaker "A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night"...a play on the words of Shakespeare, Henry V, Act 4 Prologue:

That every wretch, pining and pale before,

    Beholding him, plucks comfort from his looks;

A largess universal, like the sun,

His liberal eye doth give to every one,

Thawing cold fear, that mean and gentle all

    Behold, as may unworthiness define,

A little touch of Harry in the night.

  • magnificent harmonist

  • Brilliantly captures the essence of the 30's & 40's; Thanks a million for the touching post!

  • very much like somewhere over the rainbow

  • Oh how I wish I could hear him sing this in person.

One of my favourite songs of Harrys.

    I love ya Harry.

  • ooooo.... This is one of my fav standards (Fisherman's Wife got me on to it as a kid, lame, but there it is), and Nilsson is my FAAAAAAAAAAAV songwriter (I am a crappy songwriter, but, again, there it is), and I luvs this cover and HAD NEVER HEARD IT BEFORE!!! Who says youtube is soulless???

  • I once had a double LP of Harrys with renditions of many older songs this one was on that LP but I have not been able to find it since.

  • I've also been looking for this album.

Great voice and brilliant orchestral arrangement. Quality...

  • Oh, how I miss Harry. He was so childlike and innocent in his music. From the songs that he wrote and the ones that he sang that were written by others, they all made me either cry or smile, or a bit of both. Rest In Peace, beautiful soul. Thanks for all the wonderful music and memories. Too bad you died so young. God Bless You. They dont make them like him anymore. I hope that Arrow is with you up in heaven.

  • my dad used to sing this to me. he'd sing the chours. i'd never heard the rest of the song till today. i love it.

  • I loved this grand old standard: sung by Harry...he brings romance back to life!

    Bravo ..

    Thanks for posting...

  • a$kının amına koyim $arkının da amına koyim, evet ben de yutuba kufretmek icin giren insan modelindenim, sevgiler.

  • güliiiz, aşkım

bu şarkı bizim şarkımız olsun mu:(

    bence olsun...

  • I recently tried hunting down what was (in my opinion) the best version of this...it's a standard rom the early 30's I think...and it was between Nillson's version, and Art Garfunkel's...but I've got to say, for clarity and sheer beauty...Harry, you've done it.

  • Absolutely lovely - and painful.

  • Fantastic video, with color, the editing and the images. I love the song and the singer too.

  • great tune great sing along doesn't make me feel sad at all

  • Real Sweet ... and so sad ( if you're going through the same thing ...)

  • I have got goose bumps listening to this, it is so beautiful. It was one of my mum and dad's songs 74 years ago, God Bless them x

  • @cutanea2 You must hear Bernadette Peters' version!

  • A truly beautiful voice.

  • distracting flickering video, the untraditional melody makes it tough to listen to. haven't found a version of this on you tube I liked. my quest ends here, so I'm posting.

  • Listen to dorothy in the golden girls

  • That's funny but better to try Jodie Jean :o)

Love her version and love this song.

  • She's great, too.

  • @andrewlaker3 Yeah, nice. Saddest song ever written?

  • @andrewlaker3 thats why im looking this song up

  • I used to dance to this in a ballroom competion 40's throw back......

  • Good song

    What mean " I am blue " ,please ?

  • means

    i am sad

  • Ok ,thank you very much.

  • Yeah it's a way of saying I feel down or depressed... normally in torch songs when someone is pining for another :o)

  • Merci beaucoup

    Thank you very much

    Thank you Youtube

  • What'll I dooo.... ( :

  • The verse most singers omit is pure genius with a subtle key change that made it one of the hardest pieces of music to learn. But then Irwin Berlin was pure genius. A great great tune.

  • One of the most simple, yet beautiful songs I've ever heard. I remember it in the begining of the movie The Great Gatsby, which came out in 1971. Its beauty has never left me, and I'm glad I found this version - thank you Harry, wherever you are - in music heaven, I hope.

  • I agree. Did he do the solo in the movie?

  • when im alone with only dreams of you that wont come true, what'll i do?

  • what a doll. what a sweet voice and brilliant musician. thank you for posting. beautiful images and video work. harry harry harry harry.... what are WE doing with you? of course he would do the less well known berlin intro (learned something! thanks!) ... one example of his brilliance...

  • 'A little touch...' has been re-released with added tracks that were cut from the original....it's a gem. We truly lost a treasure when we lost Harry.

  • can someone tell me. Is this a special beginning or has everyone else just omitted it before? I have never heard this version of the beginning before

  • this isnt a special begining its the real Irving Berlin lyrics to the song,

Gone is the romance that was so divine.

'Tis broken and cannot be mended

    You must go your way,

    And I must go mine.

But now that our love dreams have ended...

    What'll I do

    When you are far away

    And I am blue

    What'll I do?

  • I missed a luxury. Give me a "What will I do" Please share. What a dream o f music. What will I do?

  • This wasnt such a "little" touch... was it? :P

  • Beautiful...

  • what an incredible talent! So beautiful, pulls every emotion from me all at once, can there be anything left to hold on to?

  • That was beautiful. I am glad I found this. Thank you.

  • one of a kind..

  • Thank U

  • Thank you ever so much for posting this! I love this song so much and always sang it to my daughter when she was a baby. She seemed to like this song best out of all I sang to her

  • For anyone who cares this version of the song was from Harry's album

'A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night' (1973) (RCA Records), US #46

Several other famous songs are covered on it.

  • Thanks for this! I remember this song from "The Great Gatsby" movie (1974). That arrangement would break God's heart!!! This is beautiful, too. Thank you !!!!

  • I remember it from Gatsby too. I bought the VHS video and it's not used, there's some substitute instrumental, so disappointing. It's about royalties and ownership issues I think.

  • this is a really old song, i remember my grandfather whistling this when i was a little girl. '69. i love harry singing this!!!

  • Best version ever? 0_o

  • OK, I just broke up with my sweetheart after 10 yrs. and I hear this. UGH! This is the most beautiful version of this song that I have ever heard. Harry knew how to sing a ballad.

  • Best rendition of this song, EVER!
