  • 240p, what a shame :<

    nice work, fast too!

one day maybe, thanks for taking the time to put this up.

  • Did not look like her. Face needed to be longer. Drew ears when they was hidden by her hair ???

  • WHAT U PPL DONT REALISE IS THAT ! HE DID IT IN JUST 9 MINS MAN 9 MINS ! FOR 9 MINS ITS EXTRA ORDINARY GIVE HIM AN HOUR AND HE'LL MAKE AS REALISTIC AS THE EXISTENCE OF PLANET MARS ! :)

  • @razorshaikh

Actually the video is being a little edited at the end i think so im not sure how long it took.

But still even if its 20 Mins... Its a third of an hour. Something like that would take me forever and id love to learn how to draw like that. My portraits usually take something like 4 hours and its not even close to that. And Since I take so long I use a picture cause i dont wanna make my subject die of boredom! :)

  • The model's face is a longer oval, her nose is longer, her eyes are naturally open wider, and her hair is darker.

  • The hatching is impressive.

  • very good portrait i really love it.

  • You are a great artist sir I cannot draw like you.

  • Ummm....... Mr. Haverly Sir my dearest apologies to disturb you but is it right to use a 6b pencil that i have staedler mars lumograph i'm very sorry fo disturbing you not that i am disturbing but i was fascinated by your art. It took my breath away please reply

  • I love the portrait and it captures a bit of emotion/character, for lack of a better word. What pencils are you using? I loved your demonstration. I have always used the one line method to start and move from there. It is quite different.

  • he capture her emotional state of mind but the physicality is diferent she has kind of rectangular face and he draw a round type of face

  • his portrait is off! if i had that tattooed on me i would be furious! just a comment as a tattoo portrait artist. i always thought the meaning of drawing a portrait of someone is to make it look exactly like the person not jsut how the artist views it.

  • Iam getting a mass headace. He does this in 10 that I barely obtain a likeness in an hour. My self portrait just is'nt delivering a great representation towards my college portfolio. Can someone offer some help? I would greatly appreciate the help!

  • hey

can u please tell me wats the best charcoal pencil brand>???

  • i dont see anything :(

  • how do u draw an detail hair for african american hair and locks

  • i like the drawings a lot, but i wondering if you had videos on the basics of creating a portrait. i watched a video where they measure the proportion by using the pencil.

  • u hand must like rythm like music now i learn new things 5star

  • what is that pencil

  • portrait was lovelier!!

  • when they put it on speed, the woman blinks SO MANY TIMES

  • she blinks a lot!!! i can never get eyes right. takes a long time with endless corrections. this is good tho

  • its no good method of draw. ^)

  • thats a good tutorial now i can do it !

  • actually drawing is better than girl herself (like a model in a children's book, a bit unrealistic), but for shadow techniques this video is great, thanks!

  • 1:17 words of wisdom

    and so... if.........you can't draw it ...

    your drawing isn't any GOOD

  • Yeah, that was awesome. Thanks.

  • Doesn't look like her, the actual face looks longer. He has good drawing skills nonetheless.

  • lmao the sketch looks better than the girl herself, when it speeds up look at the girl blink, that guy is so raw, more than sushi lol

  • I think, for a drawing at one sitting, it's common that the more still in the face the model is, it gives a more potential accuracy for the drawer- this is why it's also good to draw from pictures. But it's good you have dimensional advantage where you can probably make it more life like. For me, it's easiest to use #2 pencil on detail. You do a good job under 10 mins... Thank you for sharing.

  • i wanna thank you lon for this videos and lesson, my teacher always tell me do this and that but i need to see the techniques myself, and i really learned and enjoy your videos. thank you.

  • interesting to watch all your lessons.

  • u rawk mistah.

  • speechless.

  • fuckin sick

  • what sort of pencil he use, i wonder?

  • It looks like graphite.

  • wow....she actully does look alot better in the portrait....no offense..:P

  • infact...but he should draw her as she is in reality not in his dreams..

  • @peachieie lol

  • Speedhack! xD

  • You drew it in a way that made the model look much more beautiful on the piece of paper.

  • Wow your amazing! i hope one day i could do portraits like you do them! awesome! makes me depressed that u rock so much lol!

    keep up the awesome work

  • it all depends on the artists style. some of them like photorealistic portraits, some not. but it is incredible how offensive some people are

  • he has good technique but does not achieve lkikness with the model ,an thats what makes portrait drawing difficult.you can use that technique when you draw for comics where no likness is required (when using referense material) , but its no real portrait drawing.so little erasing would help, you can not get each line right at first try.

  • My 100,000 customers would disagree. You, sir, are rude to someone offering free encouragement. Try learning correct grammar and punctuation if you want to sound intelligent.

  • first of all my apology for my bad grammer, english is not my mother tongue.and than ,i do not want to sound intelligent,i am just expressing my oppinion.i am drawing myself and i know from my expirience that achieving likness with the model is very difficult.you have an excellent technique and the picture you have drawn is impressive, but there is not much likness with the model.you can see with one glance that the proportions of the model are diffrent.

  • There is more to a likeness than perfect proportions. I have seen so many stiff and ugly photo-realistic drawings. There has to be some of the artist in the work. Most people have me draw them to find out how they look in my particular style, not for a photo-reproduction. THAT is the art and the joy of portraiture. Otherwise, you might as well use a camera. It is the viewpoint of the artist that makes it unique. I hope you will figure that out. You will enjoy your work much more.

  • i did not consider it from that viewpoint.what you say has reason.anyway i think one can learn a lot from you.

  • @lonhaverly I agree with na55mo34. likeness is not there. way off. What you say there is perfect excuse when you simply cannot do it due to your lacks. Dont be so proud. You dont learn that way. Artists own viewpoint and rendition of the subject is great, but tht doesnt mean it needs to skimp on the techniques or accuracy in measurements. Great art always has both, great artistry AND technique. please work more on your accuracy so that at least you are drawing the same person

  • @lonhaverly just because there is good artists' perception and viewpoint doesn't mean it needs to skimp on the techniques. Good art always has both, good artistry AND technique. I think na55mo34 brought up a good point as thats what came up in my mind as well right from the start. But then if your aim is not to draw the same person but just your own idealized character, it's ok.

  • @lonhaverly so when drawing portrait, it is not very important to capture the likeness of the real person or photograph? it a question im not try to be smart or anything

  • @lonhaverly You were kind of a dick to na55mo34 to be honest =/

  • @na55mo34 I think it´s just great becuase, keep in mind, he´s doing this in 10 minutes.

  • I sort of agree with that na55 said at first about comic-like drawing because the school I went to had a similar philosophy-- something like "don't draw lines but render edges".

But I guess ultimately, it's the quality of the final work that's important, not the techniques used to make it.

    Cheers to you guys! :)

  • I can't believe how immature and childish some of these comments are.

As an artist, I can vouch for how hard it can be to draw just having people watch you, let alone filming, describing, and actually talking along the way.

Having said that, I think the portrait DOES have a likeness to the model, so you're wrong in the end anyway.

    Great job. Five stars.

  • Ha ha! It is odd that people critique this. It is here for encouragement and inspiration, and for education on the very basics, not to prove how good I draw. I really don't care what the critics think.

  • And its good ya dont care!

Drawing is for personal enjoyment, not to make a piece of work for others to put down.

  • what is the pencil you are using

  • Haha your drawings are amazing but your come backs to negative idiots are classic!

  • the girl's face is like.. can u just finish it off and explain later.. :D

  • She looks like Celine Dion. o.o

  • the portrait looks diffrent than the lady

  • I like your style. You have great control of the pencil, and I can definitly learn a lot from you since I am venturing into the buisiness of drawing portraits. About the comment on learning to see... the portrait of this woman barely shows a likeness. Everyone is awed by your speed and how beautifully you have rendered the drawing, but your proportions and accuracy is lacking. I am hoping that is because of the speed at which you draw. Other than that, thank you for these free videos.

  • Well, I am a bit busy, producing a video, teaching a lesson, and drawing a portrait. You try that AND get a perfect likeness!

  • 2:33-34 he says cunt hahaha

  • Haha he does.

  • haha he does say cunt, haha that's terrible

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHA But it's more like 2:34-35 ;)

    HOW FUCKING AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!

  • he's good at drawing hair

  • the portrait shows her even more beautiful than she is....truely amazing

  • Great instruction, the tips you give are very helpful. Your videos remind me of Bob Ross' shows on PBS, it was very relaxing to watch him paint. Thanks for sharing these with everyone!

  • He reminds me of Bob Ross too, haha.

  • Where do you get the type of pencil you are using in the video? I recently went to an art/hobby shop and did not see one similar. You mention chisel tip pencil?

  • It is just a drafting lead holder. 2 mil. The chisel is made by sanding the lead on the sanding block.

  • Thank you very much, I am not a drawer/sketcher by any means, however I have always wanted/desired the skill, your videos have encouraged me to start trying again.

  • This was awesome

  • Ur good but u need to make ur vids more fun cuz they r kinda borin.

  • I do not require that you watch them. (,:

  • HAHA! Great reply! Eat THAT Jade...you hater!

  • your drawings are beautiful so are the women ya lucky devil. its nice to draw with you but your to fast.

  • I already commented on your other vidio, but this one just proved my point. Your awsome, and THANKYOU for posting your Very helpful vidios

  • Thank you for the comment. You are why I do this.

    Lon

  • very talented.

you helped me out with my nose.

    thanks for the video.

  • I have viewed many tutorials, you are the best at understanding, visualizing what your doing, type of pencil to use and tips in drawing. So far your methods are alot of what I use. My problem is too much shading, or not enough.. My sketches are nice, but don't (proportionatly) catch the subject. I am frustrated, I continually refer back to you for someting I may have missed.. Thank you

    Jan

  • wow thanks that stuff about the chin helped me alot. :)

  • the drawing is much better than the model!

  • Wow!Your drawings are amazing,sir!

U used a drafting lead holder,a 5B Lead, and a sand paper to sharpen the lead, right sir?

Where can I buy those materials?

  • 4B lead usually. Any art store, or Dick Blick online.

  • u captured the eyes!

i think the eyes are the most vital in recognizing a portrait of the person.

    I learned from you.

    Thanks!!!

  • Very nice drawing; however, it doesn't look too much like the model. Maybe it's the angle of the camera.

  • wow you made her look so beautiful love the way you make those lines come to life im touched.

  • Only one word "AMAZING"!

  • i'm from romania you are amazing wow

  • that was really, naturally good.

  • this is amazing. the only thing which is a huge problem for me is hair... thats just a great challenge...

  • Wow! How do you do that so fast? What kind of pencil/brush were you using? I really enjoyed watching you draw her. It gave some really great tips.

  • I use a common drafting lead holder for 2 mil leads. I use 4B, but I sharpen it on a sanding block as shown to give it the chiseled point and wide stroke.

  • Wow, I the eyes were excellent.

  • Wow. That was amazing.

  • wow!! how can you do it that fast? like honestly. nice work on the hair. the only thing i notice is that for some reason your noses are always too short, haha.

  • Thank you.

    Nobody's perfect. (-:

  • Don't you find it funny w/e someone doesn't agree with your opinion that their comment sux they go on ranting and whining just because they want to?

  • FANTASTIC WORK!!!!

  • Thank you

  • Don't you find it funny? How whenever someone doesnt agree with your opinions, they put "thumbs down" just because they WANT to. Its really revolting. Anyway, great work, I am also an artist and would LOVE to be as advanced as you. =]

  • i think ur correct on the erasing stuff i dont usually erase unless i hate what ive drawn which is rare

  • neither do I use eraser :D

I think that line is a line, special on her own way

    "true artist never erase"

    :)

  • I dont agree. I think that erasing is alright. True art is from the heart, not from the way u make it.

  • I just saw where you have a website... I'm going to find out some tips..... and the tool you use to draw with.... this is so wonderful. I'm in a drawing class in college and can't do this yet but I'm going to try... Thank you!

  • hey your really good, and that chiseled point thing sounds cool, but what kinda of pencil is that? and what mm lead? because i cant find a art store in my town and the only pencils i can get are 0.7mm and they really suck its hb lead too, so im gunna get one from the Internet but i don't know much about mechanical pencils :S

  • Go to Dick Blick on line and look up drafting pencils and 2 mil drafting leads. It is 4b.

  • I think realistic drawing is amazing, but this is obviously wonderful too. Like you said, it's your own style. I love it!

  • Thank you

  • Great job. The best part of this video is how your subject nearly laughs a few times. I found myself laughing cause of her

  • i am an art student of 5 years and i cannot get my Portraits to look like the person so i ordered som books can you spare a few tips please. are you a teacher.

  • You can join the "Virtual Drawing Institute" at my website for free tips. THere you can post your drawings if you like.

  • Style is dictated by time. Try limiting the time and see how it changes your style. It is the choices you make for the time that you have that brings out the individual style. If you have ten people in an art studio drawing the same subject, and you tell them they have ten hours, their drawings will look more similar. If you tell them they have twenty minutes, their drawings will be very much different!

  • You know, I always draw from photos, and that's the difference. And sometimes portraits of myself then I look in the mirror. I am not telling you that your style is wrong or something...I love the way you draw hair because I always spend sooo much time on it:)

I like when everything is perfect, that's my style.

  • I draw too. I think he's great drawer, but something is wrong with the proportions. I think it takes much more time to do them right.

  • I am not interested in perfect. I set a limit on my time so that I can make a living. THat has etched my style, and provided a living. If you take hours, no one will sit for you. Try getting someone to sit for more than 20 minutes in public! Not gonna happen.

  • You see, this is a sketch method, different than if youi do a photo-realistic copy of a subject. This is a method taught in the old schools. The chiseled point method allows you to capture a subject in a limited time. If you prefer to do photo realism, that is something else again. I prefer the sketch. Though not perfect, it has something of myelf in it. I get more pleasure out of a twenty minute sketch than a twelver drawing.

  • Thanks for another lesson. Personally, I think the speeding up detracted from the last part. Great hair.

  • I use Canson Sothe Sketch pads, and 4B leads for the architectural style lead holder. The practrice exercises are done on printer paper.

  • thanks!!!!!!you helps to the persons !!!!is very well.

¿what class of paper you use? ¿pencil number???

  • She looks like she is trying not to laugh. :)

  • Nice you are awesome!Dude!
