I'm from Chicago and just passed the 40 Watt Club days ago ....imagine my surprise when I see the image utilized in your song ....how cool is that ? I hope your song inspires the changes or lack thereof you seek ...... REAL SONG , REAL LYRICS .... congrats on writing a REAL song .
I love how the Selig cronies play their underhanded attack tactics to try and divert the real agend of the multinational corporations which is to suck the local economy's profits out of the local economy and into the hands of the corporate greed mongers. This isn't about some musician's royality check or sales tax revenue, or jobs. The real victory will come when people refuse to buy chinese crap from big box corporations and realize that buying local is way healthier for their community.
@baddbaxx I , for one, think Wal-Mart sucks and so does Selig. I don't buy chinese crap at Wal - Mart, but I dont buy your crap either. I buy stuff as often as possible at my local flea market and farmers market. Two things ' progressive ' Athens does not have anymore. And I am far from underhanded , as I am telling you exactly how it is. BTW isnt REMs record company, Warner Brothers part of a ' mutli - national corporation ' ?
I do have time on my hands. I'm successful enough to allow myself goof off time. No, I'm not negative, friend. I just know hypocrisy when I see it. Where were these do gooders when Wal Mart used imminent domain to throw elderly black people out of their homes to build a Superstore in Oconee County just outside of Athens ? Nowhere. Because that Wal mart wasn't in their backyard. If they wanted to ' protect Athens ' they should have started long ago. Have a nice day.
Thanks for the musical inspiration! We are starting our own grass roots organization in Pagosa Springs, Colorado to stop Walmart from decimating our small town.Check out our website Pagosa First.com.
I just cannot stop crying...its just that funny. BTW - Doesn't John Bell live in Cleveland ? Put a head shop in that Wal - Mart and sell local music only and they will be all for it !
@baddbaxx So, is it or is it not a DBT album sold in a Walmart store? Are they gonna profit from the sale of said album? Are you telling me they won't collect royalties?
@frankiscool ...honestly, what is your problem with Walmart. The numbers it employs and services or the fact that they are non-union. Walmart is the business model icon of distribution efficiency that provides goods at reasonable pricing. Gee, what a terrible thing.
@jas0707 If you really don't know the problems with WalMart in general, then I suggest a quick Google search. But as far as my "problem" with WalMart goes, it's not really with Walmart specifically, but moreso the need to encroach into the downtown area. Sure, let's hire a bunch of people at the downtown WalMart....oh, but there goes the same number of jobs from local businesses that are having to close thanks to WalMart. We have 2 Walmarts already, but only one downtown.
Idk what that casengregg is talking about you don't know shit. Patterson hood is quiet possibly the greatest songwriter of All time and every word he writes has more meaning to it than anything I've ever heard musically you obviously don't know what the hell you're talking about.
@jamrob2010 Whoa. OK. Let's not get out of hand here. Patterson Hood? Greatest songwriter of all time? He's definitely good. But I imagine he's got a couple hundred miles before he catches up with Dylan, Springsteen, Neil Young... Christ, even Fleetwood Mac.
I dislike the concept and implementation of WalMart as much as anyone, and I never shop there. I never have and I never will.
But given the high density of low income people in the area immediately adjacent to downtown Athens, exactly where do you think these good people are supposed to buy groceries? Many do not have reliable transportation. We cannot all shop Earth Fare. We need a working compromise.
Patterson has the right to voice his opinion. Don't like it then shut your freaking ears. Cause someone needs to say something when shits going wrong.
So even as the economy slowly improves in my Chicago neighborhood, we continue to lose some very creative small retailers. Combine cheap imported products and zero sales tax online (and a very strong lobby) and you've got a prescription for a slow but steady decline of brick and mortar family business. I appreciate your efforts and look forward to a Chicago video response.
"Alternative ghost town" is right - what a shame. I'd pack up and leave for Winterville if the 'mart is constructed. Should have show more shuttered businesses in the video.

Love Patterson, but I wish he would just shut his mouth on all things political and philosophical. The guy comes across about as knowledgeable as the stapler sitting next to my keyboard.
If they don't build it in Athens, they'll build it just over the city limits--on the road to Winterville, or Bogart, or Watkinsville. What these big box guys want, they get.
Way to go Patterson and everyone else involved with this! The new fact-based, non-sensational website is FANTASTIC. No offense to the People for a Better Athens folks, but their emotional and somewhat erratic response was not quite what we needed but the spirit was appreciated. However, this new material is a homerun, well done. I'm proud to be Athenian.
Thanks Patterson! Love that Claire Campbell, too. Sure do wish that it had included just one more stellar Athens drummer though - Patrick "Tigger" Ferguson. Great message - hope it helps. I keep saying, "What happened to Athens, GA? Out with R.E.M. in with Walmart???" Not to mention the new Mayor, Nancy Denson...It will take public figures such as yourself speaking for there to be any chance of stopping it. We do NOT need a Walmart downtown.
I could not agree with the desire to not see a Walmart in Athens more. I have witnessed the ability of the company to "persuade" the local politicians into thinking the traffic concerns are unfounded. The promise of increased tax revenue. Helping us "Live better". None of it is true. Myself and many friends have boycotted the behemouth of cheap chinese goods for years, unfortunately its hard to convince some that a few extra dollars spent is better for our community in the long run, damn shame.
Love seeing Lera Lynn, Vernon Thornsberry, Mike Mills, J.B and Todd from Panic and the Dead Confederate guys and a couple of folks I could not identify - a real Athens classic
Awesome. Walmart, along with America's oppressive corporate tax policy, has been dual drivers in pushing production overseas. The corporation has become such a beast that it's hard to tame and it is hard to convince people looking for a bargain not to shop there, unfortunately. If everyone would just spend a few dollars a week that would have gone to Walmart at local or regional retailers, we'd be in much better shape. Great tune. Glad to see Mr. Bell show up for this one.
