I really love Mdme. Dessay's singing & acting, but one thing I don't like is the struggle for too much realism in bel canto operas. In some ways, I like what they are doing in this scene; i.e., the dream-like landscape behind a scrim. However, I don't think there should be so much "going on," such as licking the sword. Also, my personal preference would be to avoid having the splotches of blood.
Her acting is breathtaking as always but...she is litterally struggling to sing this....she completely missed the trill at 2:34 ..this is so goddamn sad! I know she has had an amazing carreer of glory but i dont want it to end just yet!! :( And it's not like she is 60 or something....she is 45...Why did she lose her vocal power so early? Not having made it to see her live while she still was at her tops is and will always remain one of my greatest regrets in life.No sarcasm. This is the truth :(
Maybe slightly less than her optimal self but this is a superb performance and the trill is there at 2.34 and that final note is still maintained.
