was at this gig at salford uni,it was my first and best gig ever, was 16 at the time and just being nearly dead on my feet from singing and dancing and moshing, awesome, thanks for posting this brings back great memories
It's fucking great. Cheers fella from Granby Rd, I know that street. Probably swam near in Stretty sports centre. Haaaaaaaaay they were the good ol' days!
@snusansmammut He seemed a shy guy in the middle of upfront boys and thus tends to be underated So it's good to read those comments about Rourke's outstandiing bass skills. Thanks
Whew, Morrissey had it going on back in 1986! This song is definitely one of their most amusing and catchy. I like their more drivey, aggressive songs.
i was about to say how the hek did m.Joyce create a crescendo on the cymbals in the intro whilst playing the toms like that????????? ....oh wait its johnny marr !!!! LOL : P
I lived on the same road as Morrissey and went to his school. Proud of the way he turned out because he used to get loads of grief off the locals. Well done Steve, lad! Yep, I'm a fan!
New Order, The Smiths, etc, etc... Un lieu magique enfanta d'immenses groupes indépendants qui s'ils n'ont pas toujours rencontré le succès commercial, ont marqué l'histoire de la musique. Classe. Très classe ! Vive les Smiths !
I love Mozzer but I was sad the way he dismissed Rourke and Joyce as not being important they were very much important- after all they were an integral part of one of Britains Greatest ever bands- The Smiths..
i was at the gig in preston ...some idiot threw a coin or something and the gig was over after 2 minutes...i never saw the smiths live apart from those 2 minutes.
if i ever see the person that threw that coin, i will happily do serious harm to him.
Fucken oath. Marr is an awesome guitarist and one of my favourites but The Smiths wouldn't be the same without Andy's great bass playing and melodic bass lines and MIke's solid as rock drumming. Fucking genuises the lot of them.
Shame that neither Morrissey or Marr gave them their due at the time. It's rare to find a group that has a special combination, a certain chemistry that makes great music rather than merely good. They will never return, but who needs to see an aging Smiths? I just hope that soon some band gets their act together and kicks some serious arse, as they did, if that is at all possible...
Well it's true that they were a great rhythm section and were responsible for a leage part of The Smiths' sound. Just a shame they didn't write any of the songs. Andy Rourke is one of the best bass players of any 80s British bands.
I'm hoping for a new Stone Roses or Smiths to come along again. Maybe they have and I've missed them, I just hope my friend back in Manchester keep me informed! This clip is just wonderful, thank you...
Joyce ( in my opinion) was able to give the Smiths a little touch of punk or strengthen the sound if you will. Correct me if I'm wrong. Fuck I love this band...
On Canadian money (bills) with the Queen's head on them, when I was a kid, we'd amuse ourselves by folding the Queen's face over itself in such a way that it no longer looked like a face, but looked like 2 buttocks instead: The Queen's Bum!
We still have her visage on our $20 bill, but it's a different(& bumless) picture now. Too bad.
As a Canadian, Elizabeth II is MY Queen too (Canada's head of State, she graces our $20 bill - not her best pic there). She doesn't belong just to the Brits!
"I say (Mama's boy) Mozz don't you ever crave (-confess!)
basiacally mike joyce and andy rourke did put work into the smiths, u cant be in a band and not contribute every1 plays their part and every1 should get equal money its a band for fucks sake not a solo project, y do u think johnny marr payed them both sraight away, morrissey is rollin in it he doesnt even need the cash hes just stubborn
the smiths werent just about good musicians, as mike joyce is quite a capable musician. It was about the message of being a Smith, Mike Joyce didnt contribute to this, or any ideas to the Smiths, same as Andy rourke, they didnt have a clue about it, they were just there in the background contributing nothing, that you cant hire
Why shouldn't bassist and drummer -(both talented and necessary),who were there day in and day out for tours and recording, and worked just as hard on stage as anyone - not receive 25% each of the performance portion on recording and gigging? For a couple of supposed "common man" lefties, M & M sure
established elitism and oppressive class division within their own band! Mozz thought HE was QUEEN of The Smiths... & "the servants shall serve". Shameful.
In fairness the Smiths would have existed with or without Rourke and Joyce. And they were free to object to the royalties percentage at the time but didn't.
actually one of the most amazing songs in my mind from The Smiths.. the power of this song is dark and moving. Such an amazing song! Thanks for sharing!
@snusansmammut They did have two guitarists many times, when playing live. Agree about Andy Rourke, though.
