Should also make mention of Denny Fitch here. Here was the expert pilot who happened to be a passenger on this flight and who became an additional member of the crew. It was largely due to his expertise (as well as Al Haynes's) which lead to the plane being 'landed' on an airfield, near paramedics and in a way which enabled 185 people to survive. Everyone who subsequently tried to fly a recreation of this plane in a simulator lost control of it and crashed a long way away from the airport.
@otis369 Yes I know. It's very sad that 112 people died. My point was that the pilots' super human skills prevented a no survivor crash. They had never received any training for this kind of emergency and nor had anyone. It had always been assumed that it was impossible for all three hydraulic systems to fail at the same time, and that a no survivor crash was inevitable if by a billion to one chance they did. My heart goes out to all 112 victims and their families.
It's hard to make out the words with the high pitch humming. But the video helps describe what was happening. Huge tragedy.. I hate engine #2. It's too close to many functions that require hydraulic fluid to maneuver the plane. Stupidest invention in aviation history.
Wow such grace under pressure. Unbelievable. "Good luck sweetheart" to the flight attendant. A hero.
