The Scottish and Irish were rebelling form England. At that time amost all of Ireland was government property of the Kingdom of England. The crowns of England and Scotland were also united in one person. Beside's it was the United Kingdom of England,Scotland,and Ireland.

The song is an old Scottish one, supposed to have been written by a Jacobite rebel awaiting execution. He addresses his wife who will return to Scotland by the ordinary high road,High road whilst he will return by the Low Road - the spirit road walked by the dead - and be home before her.
