O Brasil crescea porque o centro-sul do pais e principalmente Sao Paulo detem a liderança deste processo.
@ MsWeber: You are so wrong! Babenco himself said a short time ago, the situation of the thousands and thousands of street children in Braszil today is even worse than in his film PIXOTE from 1980!!
This video is totally false for 2010. According to UNICEF, 99% of brazilian children attend to school, and there is only 9.000 street children in a population of 200 million....
@MsWeber2009 Brazilian children may attend schools but how good is their quality of education and quality of life. Are they taught by convicted criminals? Do they have enough educational materials like books, supplies, classrooms, desks, and chairs? Do they have enough food to eat to fuel their brains in the morning?

This documentary really show the problem of our society for all the street cchildren in the world.I am a filipino and i think we can come up a filipino version of this film here in the philippines and show this to our government who is actually responsible for our children especially those living below the poverty line.I appreciate the directors way of creating this wonderful short film.Accept the fact that this is one of the worst problem of our society today.Gracias - Vicente from Philippines
Hector Babenco ganhou muito com Pixote, graças a ele, tornou-se um cineasta conhecido mundialmente. Ele poderia muito bem ajudar o garoto sair da vida que vivia.
look brazil isn't all like this only about 5 % percent or t less is like this
brazil has one of the highest literacy rates in southamerican (2nd) and the highest life expectancy in south america btw there are also areas in the u.s.a especially in the midwest
Brazil has a great economy. THere aren't starving children running around every facet of the country. And everyone is literate. According to news reports, there are only millions of homes being foreclosed in the US. There are US citizens in the ghettos like Detroit, New Orleans who are struggling to make ends meet and live off of food stamps. And as far as a hellish country, NO ONE outside the United States wants anything to do with the US. The US has the worst reputation and image worldwide.
ive travelled to 18 countries in the world and ive never heard any anti-US sentiment. It's just a media creation. I'm always treated like a celebrity and I'm just a regular guy.
Come to British Columbia and start talking about how much you love your president. You'll get a different reception. American's that don't show disrespect for other people's culture and beliefs are generally treated OK, but loud boorish people are treated in kind. There is anti-US sentiment in Canada over the pressure your government puts on us to change our drug laws to mirror yours. There are a lot of other issues (our borders, gay marriage, etc.) that we dispute with your government as well.
tho, kims were in the news months ago for, allegedly, bootlegging (not that there's anything wrong with that). pauline kael liked this movie, for all it's worth (tho she hated dirty harry, and kubrick's 2001).
The young boy is played by Fernando da Silva he was 11 when the film was made & like all the actors in the film grew up on the streets. He hawked lottery tickets with his mother & siblings & was one of ten kids. After the film was made he got in trouble with the military police, Supposedly being harrased. In 1987 when he was 19 The MP raided his home, he was playing cards at the time & hid under a bed. He was shot seven times. I learned this from a book by Peter Robb
Your welcome..20 years later..."city of god" a movie based on the book by Paulo Lins also uses residents of that infamous Rio favela as actors. The boy who rises up to run the drugs in that film never received any royalties. Shortly after the film toured the world he was arrested in a police chase on the beachfront of Rio.
Yeah but the approach of city of god is completly different. Pixote uses some residents of favela and very good actors of Brazil in a great movie not only a realistic movie as city of god. This last one is based upon people from the favela to show realit and the screen is very poor but the Pixote's one is great. i'm braziliam so I know that the translation of this videos are terrible and make the movie looses its great poetical lines.
whew! hadn't seen it in awhile. still bums me out hard!
so if thats fernando ramos da silva in the intro, then when was this film shot, i wonder? also another heavy film of merit is rodrigo d. Apparently all of the main actors(who were not actors) were murdered shortly after the films release. i think i read that somewhere...
As I said, both are great films. I've posted the entire Pixote since it is not readily available commercially. Films that are available such as Salaam Bombay I've only posted clips from to encourage viewers to buy them. A portion of the proceeds from Salaam Bombay, for instance, continues to support the Salaam Balaak Trust, which operates extensive street children projects in India.
My parents are originally from Sao Paulo but I was raised in the States...They both came from poor families (granted not as poor as the families depicted here). I've always wanted to watch this film but have had a hard time locating it. I appreciate the fact that you uploaded the entire movie. Did you have to get any special authorization to do so?
First off, I was born and raised in the United States...So IT IS my country...Second of all, who the hell are you to judge me? You don't even know me...I've been to Brazil on several occasions and have helped poor people there on a number of occasions, which is probably way more than you ever have or will...You just want to get a rise out of people huh? Boy, you must be a miserable person...If anything you're the one living the high life..You're ignorant... I should lend you $ to buy some class
"why dont you go back to brazil your country and try to help the street kids instead of living the high life in the states NOT your country"
That video is obviously way old. And to be exact, there are 13.7 million people in the US who live BELOW poverty lines. Apparently Americans aren't all wealthy. Word of advice, do some research before you start to speak. It will make you sound a little more convincing...
Europe wants Brasil to get some of the Greek Bonuses, wish is buying Monopoly money, poverty is not a big issue in Brasil anyway. The rich asking help to what they just to call the third world, now countries of concern.

This is one of my top five favorite movies of all time -- love it. It's also the saddest film I've ever seen.

By the way I bet this movie is better than "Salaam Bombay" or whatever it's called
ManoWill 4 years ago

Did you have to get any special authorization to do so?

why dont you go back to brazil your country and try to help the street kids instead of living the high life in the states NOT your country
donal56 3 years ago
First off, I was born and raised in the United States...So IT IS my country...Second of all, who the hell are you to judge me? You don't even know me...I've been to Brazil on several occasions and have helped poor people there on a number of occasions, which is probably way more than you ever have or will...You just want to get a rise out of people huh? Boy, you must be a miserable person...If anything you're the one living the high life..You're ignorant... I should lend you $ to buy some class

That donal56 might have been a troll.

Don't worry with him! He's probably some brazilian teenager with low self-respect! Or just plain stupid!

The best film about children in my opinion is Salaam Bombay. It inspired me to begin with the Centro de Encontro project in Mozambique.

It's a toss-up - they're both great films.
