  • Wii sports pawned all

  • If you are very good at perceiving, like me (I proudly say) notice that SMB is a Perfect, I mean Perfect Arcade game port to the Nes. It strikes me to this day, that "that" was possible in 1985 and that no other Mario came close to it. The platforming engne for all smbs after it are very different. Sadly though. The only 2 things I can think of is: 1- either smb was coded purely in Assemby or 2- the original engine was destroyed or deleted in an accident. No other game came close 2 smb's glory

  • @1200com Well the only 2 Arcade versions of Super Mario Bros. I'm aware of is the PlayChoice-10 version(NES rom) and the Vs. Super Mario Bros.

  • @lmcgregoruk - It might have been the vs then. All I remember is, that it was in a pizza store, and that I played it before buying the NES or before it was released in the US. The fluidness of the side scrolling engine combined with the Mario/Luigi character walking animation hasn't been matched in smb2 or 3. DOn' know about the newer smbs though!

  • I'm guessing you rushed in each of these videos for gameplay...

  • put the vids up in HD please.....O wait ....

  • You do realize that SMB 2 in NA and in EU is a clone of the game called Doki Doki Panic right? SMB 2 in Japan was later what we got on Super Mario All Stars call The Lost Levels. Nintendo of America though the game would be too hard for American gamers. So they put out what you see here. The clone copy of Doki Doki Panic.

  • @fade2black001 And how is that relevant to where the game ranked? Have you played a Mario game recently? Did you notice Shy Guys, Birdo, Bob-ombs and / or POW's?

  • @baigandine A forgot Cactuar and desert levels!

  • @baigandine Uhhh yes. All what Nintendo did was one of their less selling games Doki Doki Panic in to what you see it today. They took the elements from the game and made it into what you see today. Mario is Nintendo and it sells. So they capitalized on this idea and made money off it. That's all.

  • @fade2black001 Doki Doki Panic was also Nintendo, by Shigeru Miyamoto. But how is that relevant to how well the game sold?

  • @baigandine Its really not. All I was trying to say is that people know Mario and it sells so Nintendo used this to appeal to the consumers so they can profit off of it. You understand what I am trying to get at here?

Doki Doki Panic was a JPN only game then Nintendo of America changed the sprites to Mario and we got this clone of Doki Doki and now Nintendo has evolved it and is making money off of it. Its brilliant marketing on their part.

  • ahh, those were the good times before i switched to sony

  • More like best selling Famicom games. The Dragon Warriors sold for crap. Dragon Quest on the other hand sold damn well. Even if you combined Dragon Quest and Dragon Warrior sales, I doubt their world wide sales would top those of other NES games released world wide. It was a hit in Japan, but Japan's game sales are nothing compared to the United states, where the games bombed. I'm sure Batman and Contra had way more worldwide sales. You must be counting ports to hand helds and stuff.

  • Awe yeah TNMT

  • you can t count smb2 because the european version isnt the same as the japanese, because nintendo thought that the real game is to hard for us

  • Golf. Fun. Yay.

  • Zelda 2 adventure of link is one of best and hardest games what i have played.

  • A shame so many people were suckered into buying TMNT; that game was pure garbage.

  • aw poor baby, wii sports deserved it,

it was about to happen , get over it , smb was old .20 yrs lucky it stayed there that long, goldeneye should have dethroned it along time ago

  • @ninendowii2000 Goldeneye was great, but more like Ocarina of Time.

  • gaming is dead- these were the days!!!

  • Back then all you could count on was how pretty the game box looked, how cool the name was, and your crappy instinct... Companies knew this

  • i cant stand the dame super mario bros. 2 it was hard then shit..... but right after it the best of the best super mario bros. 3 man that some fun times

  • @SuperGreedyboi it wasnt even a mario bros game it was some japanese game they adapted for mario bros. weird huh. pretty stupid if you ask me, why just not be lazy and make another one like the the first

  • @AneierHSNO4 It wasn't just some random Japanese game. It was made by Miyamoto, creator of Mario.

  • @baigandine yea but it wasnt an original mario game. it was originally called Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic because the 2nd original one was too close to the 1st and too hard they adapted the one we now know as super mario bros 2. which was said probably a bunch b4 me on here

  • @AneierHSNO4 Yes, although it already had a couple of features ripped from Mario. POW blocks and Starmen. Not sure about the Starman theme song.

Less obviously, severed heads that functioned the same way as a Koopa shell, even if they were not originally rendered as such.

  • @SuperGreedyboi The Real Mario Bros. 2 was hard as fuck. It had the same look and playability as the first in the series, but there were a lot of BS level designs that were meant to kill you.

The creators of the game felt that it would "be too hard for American gamers" (Insulting...) so they re-packaged Doki Doki Panikku with some Mario characters and sold that instead. If I remember correctly, you can play the original SMB2 in "The Lost Levels".

  • zelda 2 and super mario 2 were of my favorite nes games lol

  • great games and so much epic music

  • Anyone have Retro Game Challenge for the DS? I just relized it's game Guida Quest is supposed to be Dragon Warrior.

  • I thought Dragon Warrior iv was one of the rarest games in NA, well top 50 at least

  • Just wanna warn you for the Zelda 2 haters below. Since zelda 2 is better than the first one :P

  • the creativity level when smb 1 came out was just Godly. a man who smashes bricks with his head, stomps on mushroom like creatures, can shoot fire balls and throw turtle shells.

  • how is mario brothers best selling game? it comes with the system

  • @dakid291 well, i liked zelda 2, just because its differen't doesn't mean its bad

  • Zelda II. Biggest disappointment ever.

  • The guy who plays SMB sucks!

  • @inviiincible its not necessary everybody to be a hardcore gamer at SMB

  • wheres CONTRA!?

  • The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros' 1 and 2 are games that I could sit down and play right now. Although I really like the Dragon Warrior games they take a lot more of your time. All great games, though. (except for Zelda II, never really liked it)

  • YOU GOT MARIO 1 WRONG IT WAS RELEASED IN OCT 85 AS LAUNCH TITLE

  • I can't believe Super Mario Bros. lost it's spot as best selling game of all time to fucking Wii Sports.

  • @glitchedgamer thats because it came with the wii (duh)

  • @darkra17 I don't think it should even count because it came with the system. It can't be "best-selling" if you are FORCED to own the game if you buy the console.

  • @glitchedgamer Then that means Super Mario Bros. doesn't count either.

  • @glitchedgamer yeah thats why i think pack in games shouldn't count

  • @glitchedgamer Tetris is the best selling game of all-time if you count mobile

  • "Best selling" does NOT mean "best game"! I bought alot of games that I THOUGHT was gonna be good, but ended up being shit.If I could go back in time,I wouldn't buy some of those games. The same goes for movies!

  • @XtonishingRavish I wonder if they ever released the numbers that this game sold when not bundled with the NES

  • I can't believe you show us In-game footage of you typing in your name...

  • Thought he was going for the 1up at 9:18 :D

  • a lot of these copies of dragon warrior were sold in japan i am thinking. Even thought i love DW.

  • I've always heard that Super Mario 3 was the biggest selling video game of all time. How did the first Super Mario Game get #1? If that's including all the copies that came with the system, that's not fair.

  • @marilyn007manson1 If I'm not mistaken Super Mario 3 is SNES, this is strictly NES

  • @GrimHellscream super mario 3 was a nes game but they re released it on the snes in super mario allstars

  • @GrimHellscream The original Super Mario 3 was on the NES. The first Mario game on the SNES was Super Mario World. Then SNES made Super Mario All Stars which had Super Mario 1,2,3 and Super Mario lost levels in one game. But the sounds and graphics were upgraded a little.

  • LIES!!! Metroid sold 16 million units!

  • Actually 7th hand Super Mario bros was released in October 1985 with the nes NYC US launch. It was released in march of 1986 to the rest of the country with the success of the launch and the nes 1985 christmas figures.

  • I love Dragon Warrior 2's music. I could listen to that all day. Medieval Europe like environment, dragons and kickass music. What more could you ask for?

  • smb2 is shait

  • legowelt sound style

  • So if super mario brothers is included why not then duck hunt?

  • @HellsFire1973 I never got duck hunt with my system, just Super Mario Bros. I'm not sure how many copies went out with the system.

  • man, that version of TMNT had me so pissed, but I finished it out of spite for its existence. interesting video.

  • @noizyme me too, I was expecting it to be like the arcade game. I was disappointed when i rented it lol.

  • Obviously Super Mario bros. is the best sell game in the NES =P

It came included with the NES just as said at 8:58

  • @mrfart35000vr Yup even though personally I will always love mario 3 a million times more. My dad and I played that into the ground when it was new. Rented it for 6 months straight before I finally got it for christmas. Played it all summer of 1991.

  • @Luigi84289 Lol I didn't say I prefer Super Mario Bros. I said it came out with the console XD

  • TMNT had a great soundtrack

  • guys dont complain a game you like isnt on nootice its best selling not favorates

  • @runescapemaster100 even if it were favorites, favorites is still an opinion, so even if you're bitching about someone's favorites, you're STILL A DOUCHEBAG..and an idiot.

  • @devastaticon no m telling people not to get mad because this is fact and best selling

  • @runescapemaster100 Yup these games were the most popular. Doesn't mean they were the absolute best that is complete opinion.

  • I love the first ninja turtles game and I think I'm one of a handful of people who can beat it legit. All my friends and I played it. I don't know why it gets so much flak now because it's hard. Halo is hard most people probably haven't beaten that on legendary but no one bitches about it. Tight controls, real level variation, and awesome music make for one awesome game not to mention all the turtles are unique and have their own uses at different points in the game.

  • @devastaticon Exactly. These games are what people bought back then not someone's top 10 greatest nes games in all of existence list.

  • Man i miss the eighties!

  • @GaunletofDestruction Me too. I feel sorry for our kids who will never have the privledges of growing up with the cheesy graphics (yet fun games) that we grew up with lol.

  • Its kinda strange that megaman isnt on the list

  • @BatmanDrugs yeah i agree, mega man is amazing

  • i remember back in the day, if you ordered nintendo power they would give you a free copy of Dragon Warrior. Ha ha, i guess they were trying to kickstart the rpg craze in america but never worked. As a kid i never understood it till later on.

  • how many dragon warrior games are there?

  • Too bad best selling doesn't translate to best games for most.

  • didn't tetris sell even more

  • all that games is very hard to pass.. and that's the reason why we all passed the game right now....

  • Die! 6:22 >:D

  • well the dragon warrior series is pretty amazing, they need to remake the original for ps3

  • So your telling me that NO 8-bit MegaMan game had ground braking sales?

    *Inafune plays MegaMan2*

None of them? Kiss my ass MegaMan 2 Outsold Zelda 2 by a mile, and Kid Icarus had way more sales than SMB3. SMB1sales are like, equal to the NES's sales.

  • have not played DW3 in over a decade, yet I hear the music and it all comes back to me.

  • WTF ^^

  • Wow, Golf was high selling??? I guess ppl liked simple back then...

Mario 2 originally wasn't a Mario game at all, that's why it's so different from the others (no block-breaking, no score, etc.) and hence why alota people didn't like it. It was a japanese game and they replaced the characters with Mario characters.

  • SMB 2 sucked

  • Comment removed

  • zelda ftw

  • I played dragon warriors with simulator like 4 yrs ago, but loved it!!! I am sure why they are sold the most

  • They should bring back the sword that shoots lasers in Zelda. It would work well with Z-targeting and the Wii Remote.

  • Comment removed

  • once upon a time, super mario games were the most sold games of all time. today? the most sold game is Wii sports. yuck.

  • where's megaman??????????????????

    0_o

  • Holy shit! MArio 2 came out in NA first? AND 4 years before? wow ..

  • @offthelinegt mario 2 wuz different in jpn and came out in 86 we got doki doki panic duisgised as mario not the real mario 2.

  • The Mario game series are the most selling video games in the whole world of all time. :D :D

  • everyone knows that mario bros is like the greatest even on the nes it was fun and challenging

  • Wait, it says Mario 2, but thats not Mario 2, thats Doki Doki panic Rip off. The Real Mario 2 was never released in America, and was only on the Famicom disk system in Japan, and was exactly like Mario 1 minus a couple changes. It was later released on Gameboy ad Super Mario: the lost levels. Anyways nice video.

  • @Kevster012 and super mario allstars on the super nintendo.

  • @sneskegagama, true, but I was talking about what systems they were originally from. Allstars was just a Snes game including all the Mario games from different Nintendo systems, thats why I didn't mention allstars.

  • @Kevster012 People in Britain and Japan didn't like the original Super Mario Bros 2 but it was due to be released in USA so Japan took the game Doki Doki panic and quickly made some changes to turn it into Super Mario Bros 2. If you want to play the orignal Super Mario 2. You can find it on the Super Nintendo game "Super Mario All Stars" it's now called "Super Mario Bros:The lost levels". I always wondered why Super Mario 2 was so differant than the others until I heard about it on TV.

  • Were the dragon warrior games made from squaresoft? The overworlds look very similar to Final Fanatsy

  • Comment removed

  • not tetris? i'm suprised.

  • If you look at the list on wikipedia where he got his Top 10, number 6-10 only use copies sold in Japan. So, its obvious the list would change if there were data available for US sales.

I'm sure Golf and all of the Dragon Warrior games would no longer be on the list. Replaced with Tetris, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Metroid and the like.

  • @no1cp Good point. I imagine Tecmo Bowl and Paper Boy might be up there too.

  • 2 of my favorite games was on there. Legend of Zelda (being my favorite) and SMB3. I loath TMNT. How such a badly designed game sold that much is beyond me. It must be the E.T. effect. I never liked turn based RPG's. It feels too much like a board game. If I want a board game I would buy a board game.

  • wow pokemon totally ripped off dragon warrior

  • NO ITS FINAL FANTASY

  • Did you guys know that Nintendo Power magazine gave out free copies of Dragon Warrior for the subscribers ? That's probably why they sold so many copies

  • @newjack1879

That was only the first game, which isn't on this list. While none of the Dragon Warriors sold well in the US, they sold really well in Japan.

  • I had no idea Dragon Warrior was out in the NES days. I just know it from the Gameboy color versions on. You learn something new everyday.

  • over 40 mill copys! holly shit.

  • 60mill NES was sold ...

  • Thank Christ himself for Super Mario Bros. He plays it religiously with a Shining Goblet of Mana daily.

  • Regardless of the fact SMB was sold with the NES, it was a marketing tactic to sell. When the NES came out in the US, gaming was on the verge of death, so selling the NES alone wouldn't of sold. Packaging SMB with the NES and charging just a bit under both seperate, saved the industry.

  • If you wanna get nit picky then one could argue that it shouldn't be on the list as it was the NES that was being sold, SMB was just a handout. It was never actually "sold" it was "given" with the purchase of the NES. But that's only if you wanna nit pick it to death. I don't mind it being at #1 as it was one of the best games ever but I think the SMB3 deserves it more as it sold the cartridge and not the NES.

  • @BonJoviFanboy I agree. But it does irritate me that SMB1 made number one. It didn't "Sell" it's way to number one, it snuck along into our homes with the systems. It cheated lol.

  • No Castlevania Either!!

  • No Mega Man!!

  • HEY!! Where is Mike Tyson's Punch out? I love that game.

  • How did Golf end up on this list? yuck

  • Thanks For The Information^_^

  • why is it when there is a countdown list on nes it always has super mario bros at number1!!!!!!!!

  • In this case it's because it is the best selling NES game.

  • Sorry, but SMB3 has sold the most units out of ANY video game.

I quote, "In 2008, Guinness World Records listed the game as the best-selling video game to be sold separately from a system, and reported worldwide sales of over 18 million copies."

  • The NES was sold with SMB1.

  • Which is why I don't think it should count. Any game sold with the console is gonna win as if you ahve the console you have that game.

  • I will mention it in this video.

  • Thank you, saw the annotation. SMB was great but I just love SMB3 way too much. Fav game of all time.

  • I hated mario bros. 3, my favorite game on the nes was metroid

  • guinnessworldrecords:

The Nintendo game Super Mario Brothers has sold a total of 40.23 million copies worldwide. The 26 games featuring Mario, the character who first appeared in the arcade game Donkey Kong in 1982, have sold more than 152 million copies in total since 1983. More than 40% of US households own a Nintendo game system.

  • @THE7thHAND really over 40% ? shit dude thats freaking awesome,

  • @THE7thHAND But how many of those games were "Sold" with the system? When my parents bought me my first Nintendo 22 years ago, their intentions weren't to purchase Super Mario Bros but to purchase the system. Super Mario Bros just happened to be with it, are the statics including those games? They shouldn't since that game was suppost to be "Free" with the purchase of the Nintendo.

  • @wtf123456789100 are u idiot? Obviously Super Mario Bross ONE is most sold than Super mario 3.

  • @wtf123456789100 I know you've already looked like an idiot being marked as spam and being proven wrong, but are you retarded?

  • @wtf123456789100 fuck you faggot retard

  • wheres caselviana

  • I'm sorry, it didn't sell good enough.

  • wow DRAGON WARRIOR looks pretty much like old pokemon games

  • Did the Super mario bros cart get 40 million from just the duck hunt double pack. Or did you add everything super mario bros?

    Super mario bros by itself

super mario bros with duck hunt

super mario bros with duck hunt and world class track meet.

  • On SMB 3, ur suppose 2 kill those mushroom guysguys after u get the feather. Then u clear the way 2 run & fly up n2 the clouds followin' the coin trail.

  • only the cool kids can jump over the flag...

  • 40 million SMB carts sold?! No wonder you can't move for them on ebay. If these numbers are going by pack-in games too however, where's duck hunt? I'd say for every two regular SMB carts you'll see one SMB/Duck Hunt cart.

  • Hmm TMNT eh? Betcha there we're 4 million people getting pissed off and throwing the controller at the screen....

  • wtf is dragon warrior i've never heard of it till now lol

  • That's exactly what I said so you are not alone...

  • Ahww good old times!

  • omg, u suck at playing mario games... :)

  • is it me or dragon warrior IV says Dragon Harior?

  • haha tibia aint much better than the first one :P

  • Well, the original mario bros was packed in with the NES that's why it's the highest. Not that it is not deserving.

  • I love Dragon Quest(Warrior)

  • And I'm sure Nintendo thinks you're crap, too! :D

  • Was that supposed to be offensive? o_o;

Okay, illiterate man. Whatever you say.

  • Dragon Warrior reminds me ALOT of Star Tropics.

  • All Hail the Mario 3, king of the nes.

  • woo zelda 2 my favorite zelda game. that is also BY FAR the hardest zelda game:]

  • AVGN did a review on TMNT

  • why do you know how many people buy the games on the NES?

  • You can look it up on the internet.

  • Here's a little side note - most of us already know this, but to those who don't, did you notice the difference of 1988 for the US to 1992 for Japan on SMB2? That's because the game we know as SMB2 was originally a Japanese game called Doki Doki Panic for Famicom Disk System, with Mario characters put in. The game called SMB: The Lost Levels in America is the real SMB2, which we didn't get until Super Mario All-Stars, and even then it's not exactly the same. Out SMB2 is called SMB2US in Japan.

  • Smb3 best game But SMB Is FREAKING GOOD Tooooo

  • #10 was like Pokemon but on a waaaay lesser scale..

  • wtf 40mil?, my god thats insane @,@

  • incredible the difference of graphics with top 2 to top 1

  • super mario brothers changed the era of video games, it took video games to another level at that time...

  • Super mario bros sold 40 million?!

Damn, that's a lot. But it was a great game, still haven't beaten it.

  • Cant believe Legacy of the Wizard wasn't a top seller. That game was awesome.
