Further up are more crossings, the sounds of trains like the jingle of hundreds of cattle shackled by pirates. As large container units come close the air is ominously displaced. The wheels shear--short, rhythmic crescendos of arcing grind. In the distance the Canadian Pacific is reversing, its gears high wind as it pushes carriages along.

ahhhhh yes. My grandma used to live in the N.E. part of portage, every weekend I'd be over visiting and hear these monsters rumble through at all times of the day.

So I guess that was the station I waited at as a two year old for out trip to B.C. One of my first memories. And I recall wondering what kind of locomotive the train would have. It turned out to be one of those modern green and yellow things that didn't go chugga-chugga.

How was that long container fastened atop two smaller ones? the edges were hanging over.

All containers fasten at the corners with locking pins. They are designed to fit together like that. If you have a 53' container on top of a 40' (or 2 20') container they are designed to lock together.

The truth is a Railfan wants to get stopped by a train, whereas a normal person is in a hurry to get nowhere, so it bugs them. Just never try and beat the train

Very true. I see that with my wife - she doesn't want to get stopped by the train, whereas I'm delighted. It might be different if I saw a train every day on my way to work.

Great for visitors, not so much for locals, eh? My wife used to live in Regina and Winnipeg and had the same kind of comment about trains - always blocking crossings. :)
