...get your ear so used to (whatever you defibe by catchiness) that it rejects other things that don't sound like it, and that leads to musical assholeness. But this concerns only whether the music is well thought out or not. Taste is personal, and it can include things that are poorly thought out and exclude things that are well thought out.
So when people say that they don't like deerhoof I get it, but you cannot say it's halfassed or disjointed because it is actually well thought out.
first of all: I AM A MUSIC SNOB and I don't listen to much rock but i believe that deerhoof is one of the best rock bands.
Music is a form of art because the musician uses his purpose to create. if it is an unintentional sound it's called noise. other than that IT CAN BE AND SOUND LIKE ANYTHING. the important thing is that the musician gets the sound that he intended when he plays/writes music. catchiness is secondary and if overused or used poorly it can lead to blandness and...
@Robledoruidoso It's true man. My friend and I were broaching the subject of what constitutes and defines art, and we came to the conclusion - although we weren't necessarily happy about it - that anything whatsoever can be art; all that is required is for its producer to dub it so.
Why do people think Deerhoof fans are music snobs? I don't get it. As far as indie rock goes, it's some of the least pretentious and immediately accessible music I've heard.
I agree, a friend introduced me to this band, and I think of it as a piece of Art, you may not understand it, your ears might not reconize a sound but its art, and you appreciate it for what it is.
Music snobs? I don't get that either... To me, the fact that I love their music proves that I am a very screwy individual. Or at least, I have very screwy eardrums. Anyone that doesn't like this stuff, I totally understand.
I personally love them, and would go to drastic measures to get tickets if they ever perform in my town.
Deerhoof have a myriad of perfectly catchy songs with totally traditional song structures, what have you been listening to? If her voice puts you off fair enough but I hardly think Deerhoof are "Incohesive"
I'm not sure I'd agree with you that Deerhoof's song structures are traditional, but there are a lot of traditional borrowings strung together in suprising arrangements. This is where gocleaver got his descriptor, "incohesive." Like you, I think incohesive is not correct. That's because their songs and style are better described with the word, "pastiche."
I hate it when people mistake half-assedry/incohesion for creativity. You could get the same effect by visiting a construction site...this shit is so disjointed it pains me to think of all the ignorant douchebags thumbing it up to make themselves feel cool.

Sorry folks, but this is indie music snob material at its purest. Its the kind of 'music'(read: noise) snobs have pound repeatedly into their heads over a long period of time before they 'like' it, in order to deceive themselves and brag to their faggot friends that they listen to a band no one's ever heard of. Guess what tards, if you listen to Fergalicious 34 times in a row, youll think its catchy too.....catchy doesnt mean 'good'.
Fergalicious wasn't awful. what else is good about music other than catchiness???? catchy just means you like the sound of it.
And i think the category "indie music" is trying to catch too much int one term, it is reallly silly. I don't think all music that goes unplayed on top 40 radio should be lumped together in one silly term.
I don't think people really listen to Deerhoof because they're catchy. And that's a pretty big assumption you're making about "pound[ing] repeatedly into their heads." Haven't you ever heard of an acquired taste? If I only did things I liked the first time, I would be eating baby food, watching Teletubbies and listening to Raffi. Is that what you do?
"Why do it?" bahhhahahah
