- This will be a gig consisting of at least 12 proper songs by HSL.
- There will be humourous "banter" in between these songs, where hopefully people will laugh initially but in retrospect will learn about themselves in a way they didn't expect.
- The names of crushes, exes, friends and family will be changed in order to protect the innocent.
- Any sort of recording, analogue or digital, still or live action is authorised and actively encouraged. It helps give HSL a sense of fame and importance.
- While the songs and stories presented by HSL are entirely autobiographical, HSL realises there are at least 3 sides to every story and every version of events is as valid as each other.
- There may be a PowerPoint demonstration if HSL understands how to use it properly. After all, he doesn't want his life to look like a transition year project...
Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Robert Johnson, Brian Jones... all giants of music history and mythology. All five, as well have many others; achieved so much in music and popular culture, achieved amazing wealth and worldwide fame, burned bright and died tragically young. The infamous 27 Club. All dead at the age of 27, "all dead, but still alive. In endless art, in endless time"
Feb 21 2008 will be the last day of Honest Spud Leonard being 27; the next day is his 28th birthday. To mark this occasion HSL will be playing a tribute concert to his potential; like Marlon Brando in On The Waterfront, "he coulda been a contenda, coulda been somebody". HSL too could have been a contender, but in truth he isn't.
Incredibly self conscious, with massive self confidence and terrible self-esteem, HSL will be playing a set that will encompass his whole life; his ups, downs and in betweens. An artistic career that has lasted over ten years, which has been encompassed in a press release which has taken thirty minutes to write.
An searingly autobiographical show, full of the pathos, exaggeration and revisionism that you'd expect of a self-admitted contrary, contradictory cynic and chancer. A charismatic pisshead who has played shows in three continents, released several records, played close to 250 gigs, met every living musical hero he has (and played with all of them except The Dirty Three). Yet he has never been content.
HSL stops playing it safe in The Roundy on Thursday 21 Feb at 9pm.
Nice. Like the commentary too. Keeps up the high standards of directors commentaries everywhere.
