Why should it matter if its the original? For paganini your suppose to do fingerings that your comfortable with doing not copying what a man did, that obviously had a hand condition of some sort
@ericgable Not fingering, it is the original "bowing". Multiple notes slurred, which makes it significantly harder that separate staccato. Compare his bowing with that used by Shlomo Mintz, for example.
this is not completely original bowing as he plays 3+1 combination all the time.Check Alexander Markov performance-also not completely original bowing, but he plays much more bowing combinations than this one. However this is fantastic performance....
@diafiro By "not completely original" I mean that this IS NOT the original bowing. The original manuscript that I know has written combinations 3+1,3+1, 4 , 4 in first two bars, and then it says "simile". So if you say original bowing I would expect him to play this combinations in each bar, and not only 3+1 as he does. However,I say again - this is absolutely incredible performance.
@mufty1qwer33 I would like to know what your source is for the 'original manuscript"?? I go by the one found at the website IMSLP-"dot"-ORG. In this one it's written (3+1)(3+1) - Simile.
Not that I intend to have a spirit of contention, but I'm actually working on this very caprice and am trying to do the 3+1 throughout, and it's working quite nicely so far... so (3+1)(3+1)(4)(4) would mean a new headache!!! :))
@mufty1qwer33 you are mistaken.. 3+1 is what Paganini wrote. He writes first 8 16th notes 3+1,3+1, and then writes simili - I have the copy of his handwritten manuscript.
But remember, violinists usually don't perform at their top speeds, so the way to judge a player's technique is not by speed, but by accuracy: their intonation, the clarity and evenness of their notes, etc.
This is why Kavakos' technique, while astonishing, is not quite Heifetz or Kogan. He goes fast but he keeps making mistakes: I've listened to his Paganini 5th, 24th, and his Sauret cadenza, and he messes up in all of them. Speed alone is not technique. Accuracy is.
Are you only judging by speed? Kavakos went off-tune on the high E natural near the beginning. And he used the much easier bowing. Remember: just because someone plays it slower, doesn't meant they can't go faster. This is not a race. I bet both of them can go faster, but it would sound ridiculous. I judge technique by accuracy, not by speed, and Kavakos consistently makes inaccuracies, despite his speed.
Outstanding playing. Love it how you keep to the original bowing throughout the piece, even in places where it is acceptable to play down/up-up-up.
By the way, what would make the bowing even more "original" (or, rather, authentic) is if you would play the arpeggios in one bow, like it's written, rather than divide in order to get more sound. It's a bit of a challenge, but worth trying.
good heavens that was like WOW. :) Oh and critics... please don't forget that there is NO such thing as a perfect performance... that's why we play live... it's always different and exciting. Perfect performances are done in studios with a net. That's great... we all love a great album production... but this isn't that. My money says most of the people criticing little things like it ruins the whole thing can't play a quarter as well anyway. Oh and, Paganini would not have played it smoothly.
it's true that is one of the best out there...but is not even close to kavakos
Feng Ning plays the whole thing in 2minutes :05 seconds kavakos in 1 minute 45 seconds !!!!!!! kavakos is completely in another level, one step avobe of all others
is like f3000 and f1 at spa franchorshamps (by the time difference i mean)
In my opinion this guy is one of the best violinists we will ever see. It is very rare to see someone so technically outstanding and yet one of the most musical.
haha. you can't play that any cleaner. riccochet bowings is the hardest bowing to do besides for slured spicatto. Nobody plays these bowings because they are to hard to play. and what is this melody you speak of? the only thing happening in this pieces is sequencing. there is no melody, just notes.
those are the left fingers, slapping very hard on the fingerboard. in many cases, like when descending quickly on arpeggios, very hard to avoid -- it's instinct to keep the taught string down between notes. one of the very few times you'll hear the "percussive" elements to a violin! and unintentional, of course... but like I said, hard to avoid.
Thats clearly not the original bowing, but its not seperate either. looks like 3 downs, one up one on every beat. Which is not the original bowing. Look on my page for the best version of this, with totally original bowing throughout.
the problem with the original bowing is that no one can do it without making more noise than pitch - probably paganini could -
but bravo for trying!

if players don't use original bowing to play this piece, paganini caprice no 5 would be the easiest one to play, even comparing with no 16.

And why does anyone have to play more "bow combinations" ??
Go check the manuscript! The original says 3+1 for the entire Agitato part.

Does anyone what that 'ticking' sound is at 2:02?
I don't think it came from the audience, cause I heard the same thing on Itzhak Perlman recording of this piece from his 1972 album.
