  • Dear Sumi Jo is a gift to humanity. An angel to treasure forever. A true privilege to see/hear this.

  • Soave...

  • 3:58 to 4:18 ... ! the most beautiful sound to ever come out of a human being, probably ever.

  • LOVE this! <3

  • @sandytheslayer. I too will be in the front row on 25 November 2011. I can't wait to be in the same room as Sumi Jo. She is the finest living human being.

  • Absolutely right @operafantic, she is passing every note with the requirement of composer not subordinating the aria to her habilities, she is someone who deserves the crown of extraordinary perfection

  • 3:17 the lady is a legend and so modest too.

  • If it raises the hairs on the back of my neck that is good enough for me. I don't care about critics and experts, if it transports me into the stratosphere, she has done her job.

  • @jerramy Couldn't have said it better myself....

  • Bravíssimo! Tears went to my eyes listening to this magnificent presentation! She is just marvelous!

  • I'm not one for opra. But I enjoy classical. This woman has a voice that touches me inside. Not just the ears, but down in the soul. She is very gifted. Her name came up while I was looking (listening) to 'The Fifth Element' diva scene. I am sure she was the same singer and the 'Diva' scene was not enhanced. Once again, truly gifted.

  • @TheDarkSide61862 No, the score for the Fifth Element was sung by Inva Mula Tchako, but you are correct to say that the scene was not enhanced.

  • @Whirlflux Thought it 'had to be Sumi'. Thanks for the correction. Sumi, awesome! Inva, awesome as well! I have to admit, and to coin what someone else described, both Sumi and Inva makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck and sends "people bumps" down my arms. (goose bumps) I don't know what makes me. But I can listen to the Diva scene (Fifth Element) over and over. Must be the oversized smurf with the tentacles. :)

  • Just amazing

  • she is beautiful, also her dress looks beautiful :)

  • damn.

  • OHMYGOD she's amaziiiiiiiing !!!!!!!!!

  • lovely

  • Glamorous & mad

  • Normally I absolutely love Sumi Jo, but her high notes seemed very tight and strained in this performance. Especially that last one. Ouch.

  • @itshopkittens Agreed.not so effortlessly but anyway she projected the high notes gracefully.

  • The point is, you have to have such a voice - to show off! She has the voice, the technique and - last not least - the deep musicality of a diva. Which I cannot say of Dessay...

  • Thanks for uploading this in terrible quality. It's basically torture to hear hear wonderful voice in scratchy shit quality. I cant believe I can find 1000's of terrible rap and pop videos in 720p but not one Sumi Jo above 240. What is this world coming to? At least you uploaded it I guess....

    Thanks?

  • @The4LA2Baker0 Check the date before you bitch at someone for crap video quality. This was uploaded in 2006, long before Youtube had the HD option. Hell, this was even uploaded before Google bought Youtube. Just be appreciative that there are people who even bother to upload classical performances on here. Anyway, if you don't like the quality, why don't you provide something better yourself?

  • 2:37 to 4:51...

please bring me an original version score which includes these passages.

I think it is quite funny to discuss things that are not written in the score. As time passes and more I get involved with my profession of musician, I get more and more against "tradition", because it brings jewels from the past but also trash. Hopefully, one can enjoy lately performances of all these mad ladies performed as romantic heroines than technique-freaks.

  • What's wrong with that flute player? Why does he play like that? I'm a flute player too, and I HATE when other flute players don't raise their flutes. And now some idiot will say don't like it, don't watch it,will call the name of the dude &write a whole paragraph telling me why does he play like that and that idiot will try to make me feel bad 4ignoring that. But, dude, seriously, before u write all that shit; please, ask yourself if I would give a damn what u have to say about this comment.

  • I have tickets to see her in London later this year in a Mozart recital! I'm going to be right at the front- I'm going to be breathing in Sumi Jo's breath...Hopefully I'll be able sing like her afterwards!

  • No, I like Mariella Devia very much. I heard another Italian soprano, Serena Farnocchia, sing Maria Stuarda live last spring. She was fabulous, with a big smooth voice, great coloratura and expression in a really difficult role. Check her out, if you haven't. Voigt and others are good in different repertoires. As for Dessay's Lucia, I could hardly hear her, and I was sitting downstairs.

  • klas

  • Essa é uma voz!!!! Que timbre!!!!! É UMA DIVA....ETERNAMENTE.BRAVA SUMI !!!!!

  • Yes, Diva- crocodile ! Ohh !

  • WOW! I'm very impress with her. She's pretty much perfect IMO.

  • @operafantic Have you ever seen the score of the Mad scene of Lucia? She is just doing all the difficult things that the composer required. I can see here her serious and honest attitude towards music and composer. I know many other singers that change the scores (because they can't do or didn't make effort to do), just skips those hiralious scales, runs, etc. I cannot understand why this serious attitude towards music can be regarded as just showing off her technique for someone (like you.)

  • @operafantic Nasty comment. Do you dismiss all living sopranos?

  • MALDITO INFELIZAJE... APLAUDIENDO CUANDO AÚN NO TERMINA LA ORQUESTA!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I just noticed how the choir is all Asian...she had to show them that Asians can sing also

  • One of the best sopranos in the world!

  • this is definitely the greatest performance ever ! :))

  • Now, this is singing!

  • Sumi Jo is AMAZING! :D

  • hermosa interpretacion simplemente divina

  • This Mad Scene blows my mind. Splendide, absolutely amazing, a lovely talented soprano. " Hermosísima! el sonido espectacular".Absolutely amazing :))

Wonderful singing, a lovely talented soprano. A force of nature! Magnificent! ORIGINAL AND UNIQUE.Absolutely pleasant. "UN" delight to my ears.

    Thank U for sharing.

  • it was amazing

  • 6:04 to 6:10 whoa...a mess...but the rest was great though...

  • @violinistx100 8:04 - 8:10 sorry...

  • Wish I could sing like that !!! Lovely! Chills at 8:03 ; how she still pushes that one note out! Amazing!

  • Wow! She sounds like a lil bird! Amazing!

  • One of the best coloratura sopranos in the world!!!!

  • Ok, the singing in the 1st aria is a lot nicer, i enjoyed it a lot

  • The middle/bottom needs a TAD more space, but the top is beautiful.

  • Wow----nothing short of stunning! Sumi is so gorgeous, she could almost make me go straight~ lol

  • She has the most beautiful gowns and her voice is ALWAYS PERFECT!

  • well, she has an amazing talent. Some of the facial expressions were comical... but simply amazing singing none-the-less.

  • Perfect!

  • i wish I could sing like that

  • Sigh...

  • Oh man, that note at the end of the first song is so pure and clear.... gave me goosebumps! She's so amazing, I love her!

  • This woman is so underrated - it can't be easy being Asian in opera. Better than Dessay and Damrau, and (I know I'll get shot for saying this) even Devia. That isn't saying much, but she should have been offered half their gigs.

I will say that she needs a new makeup artist.

  • @gustopheles I heartily agree. Although I'm a huge Dessay fan, I've been listening to Sumi all day today and thinking the same thing. She's just...*goosebumps*

  • @gustopheles Hey, we like who we like. I'm a big Devia fan but I certainly admire Jo. Both could teach classes in breath control alone. Other than Caballe I don't know two sopranos with better control than Jo and Devia. Years from now (maybe sooner), we'll be asking who the new Jo's and Devia's are.

  • @rossinilove

Fully agree, we all like whom we like, There will be new great singers in the future but no “new Sumi Jo”, for me there will only be ever be one, exquisite and totally unique!

  • @gustopheles She's not that underated! She's been at the MET and stuff. She's pretty famous...I knew who she was before I...knew who she was...if that makes sense haha =/

  • @gustopheles Bitter much?

  • Comment removed

  • @gustopheles Exactly right my friend - I saw Sumi Jo in concert a marvel :)

  • magnificent!

  • fantastic

  • wow........

  • the 'gum' girl irritating...

  • @sumimimi0 HeHe... It's fun. Gum Girl.... Do you mean the violinist?

  • @smoothiw yeah.. anyways i really than you a lot for posting all of sumi jo's video!!! i love her a lot and i am so happy that people like you post a lot of videos of sumi jo.. once again thank you

  • @sumimimi0 no hatin' you can't even sing this well!

  • @jenshu7 I don't think that user is even talking about Sumi's voice in his/her comment.

  • @cogitoergoboh hahahahahahahahaha

  • @cogitoergoboh hahahahahahahahaha no sa niente!!! di niente!!!!!

  • Sumi Jo, what you give us is pure joy

  • She is the original "Wonder Girl" from Korea. Amazing!

  • She's so amazing. She makes it look so easy!

  • to everyone who thinks she is japanese cause of her look and name, her korean name is actually sukyung jo or 조수경 but she changed her name to sumi jo or 조수미 so that people can call her name easier.

  • Absolut Perfekt!

  • Well 2:37 onwards ain't exactly the guitar duel from the film Crossroads, but from an Opera stance, it's as near as damn it!

  • She is amazing. :)

  • klas

  • What a technique!!! She is amazing!

  • Perfect!

  • blood stains?

  • @livewoutlimit

she's in love with a man, but she is forced to marry someone else in an arranged marriage. on their wedding night, she stabs him to death and to the horror of the wedding guests, wanders out amongst them in a blood stained dress, deranged.

  • Il bel canto, neoclássico...

  • Stunning!

  • I really wish I could have a voice like that however I'm a mezzo soprano so it is not possible to sing those notes :(

  • @JaneBailey01 Be a rebel and transpose it down. :)

  • Amazing soprano! Bravo! She's great!

  • Que goze de voz...! magnifica!

  • I rest near this music, the miraculous voice, thank`s.

  • Beautiful orchestra!!

  • Bravo!

  • sorry in which scenes appears this mad love?

  • I agree with ChrisStockslager below. This otherwise wonderful performance is marred by the “look how long I can hold on to this note – even after the orchestra has stopped playing” syndrome evinced by so many modern performers.

But who is the flautist? His is a brilliant, faultless performance.

  • I get shiverings everytime i hear 4:45 :D

  • Damn Gurlllll! :O

  • BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA - PRIMA VOCE XXX

  • WONDERFUL Eb at the end (well, maybe pretty thin, but perfectly on pitch) ... but 12 seconds? Really? I think after about 7, it's just all in showing off and being a diva about it. I'm sure Sutherland could hold the same Eb just as long, if not longer, but she had the good taste to cut it off at the right time

  • Die perfekte Stimme für diese Partie. Könnte noch etwas zerbrechlicher sein.

    Fantastisch

  • Anyone know what was the last note she hit through scientific pitch notation???

  • @Suny807

    It is E flat 6

  • @Suny807 the last note of the video? A D flat above high C.

  • No...E-flat...

  • he is professional on controlling her voice..

but i think her voice is abit sharp i think o.o

haha i am nt familiar of voice XD but i am interest of it~

  • DIIIIIIIIIIIVAAAAAAAA!!!!!

  • DIVA!!!! she is a diva!!!

  • Yeah! I love Sumi Jo, her control, not enough words to describe it.

  • Voz incrivel e maravilhosa. Grande nome da musica. Um passaro a cantar.

  • 2:32 best part ahahaha =))))))))))

  • goosebumps....

  • Absolutely stupendous...but store the glasses somewhere safe before you hit the 'Play' button!!

  • @savvas74 buahahahha :)))))))) hopefuly some of us are using disposable cups

  • This is the longest E flat in history: 12 seconds. No one else ever did that, as far as I know. Marverlous and good looking too...

  • @zdenko1945 VERYYYYYYYYYYY sucks

  • @AleBro83

yeah....ur mom sucks....but dont make public....

  • @zdenko1945 there is a longer e-flat: almost 14 seconds by Sumi Jo, too.

Check out "Sumi Jo - Offenbach - Les Contes d'Hoffmann - Doll Song"

  • she takes my breath away. her soulful voice. flawless technique -- machine-like perfection.... stunning.

i also love how annoyed the violinists look at 4:52 when the audience starts clapping exactly as they're about to start playing again. =)

  • 4:46 through 4:51 takes my breath away!! Sylvia Sass was the last coloratura before Sumi Jo who could do that, in my opinion.

  • f y i:

Sumi Jo is said to be the worlds best contemporary coloratura soprano, in technique and voice building.

Other great singers in the world are happy to get a lesson by her ...

  • a jes dobra majkumme kad sam ja naredu

  • Sumi Jo has always seemed to me to emote pure, unadulterated, stinging emotion into her vocalisations. Her passion, channeled from her heart to her voice is visceral! I feel her strong Korean voice is one of the best. She is not only power though, but constitutes the epitomy of a great singer. She has flawless technique and power and subtlety throughout her entire dynamic range, expressing a whisper soft note or a crushing, soaring one. Her nuanced delivery is always enchanting.

    Brava Sumi!

  • better than her version of "Mein Herr marquis" of Strauss's "Die Fledermaus"... that's for sure

  • i think the audience thought she finished singing like after singing the e

  • you are beautiful in every way sumi.

  • increible!!!!!

  • Ela é lindaaaa

  • OMG...made me cry....

  • She is the voice!. she song the diva dance. at the moment i heard the song. wow my spirit dance it self. and this. wow she is my idol. i could't think of anywords. but this.. she got a voice of a goddest.

  • wow!!!!! fantastic!!!!!

  • angels voice

  • GRANDISSIMA !!!!!!

  • eccezionale!!!!!

  • esplendida

  • grandiosa

  • see also the rendition of stunning Petya Ivanova's Lucia

  • Fabulous voice. Move over Joan

  • beloooo molto belo ti voglio bene mia mussa

  • She's amazing.

However, I couldn't help but notice that one of the orchestra players (The blond with her hair in a ponytail and short bangs hanging on her forhead) was moving her mouth as if she was chewing on gum... I really hope it's just how she moves her mouth.

If she really was chewing gum I hope the director spoke to her about it.

  • @lvlorbidity in wihich scene (time) is it???

  • the best version I ever heard...

  • 3:34 xD !! 26 seP ! 09 !!

  • es realmente excepcional

  • Elle est fantastique. Quelle émotion.

I also posted my video O Sole Mio to you, I hope you would enjoy it.

By the way miss SUMI JO what nationaly are you ? Are you a Japanese?

    From: Marching On Christians,

    Nagaharu Hayashi

  • She's Korean.
