This is such a depressing movie. Everything about it is incredibly bleak.

"Precious" at least had a happy ending, but the difference was that in "Precious" the protagonist is helped by people who really do care. In "Lilya-4-Ever" nobody gives a shit. The kids are all on their own.

It's not explicitly mentioned, but in this film she's part of Estonia's Russian-speaking minority, left behind after the USSR crumbled. Their situation is precarious because Estonia doesn't want them.

The girl which this story is heavily built upon was named Danguole Rasalaite. She was 16 y.o and trafficked from Lithuania to Sweden in september 1999. She escaped from the traffickers and after a few days, on the 7th january 2000, she jumped from a bridge onto a highway. She was taken to hospital and was declared dead on the 10th of january 2000.

She left behind her three letters for her friends in Lithuania. They were never sent. In the letters she explained everything.
