Also if it was a case like this were the point of the criminal is not to attack you, just pointing a gun at them would be enough stop them, with out doing any harm to yourself, him, and the store.

If someone is determined to kill you with a firearm, OC will not protect you, only a gun would. If the criminal was planning on stealing from you, and you point a gun at them(no need to shoot), they will stop, for fear of being shot. Spraying OC would also work for this, but you will damage the store, the criminal, and possibly yourself. A gun works for both cases but OC only for 1.
