I just started an aikido class and I am pretty sure I'm officially the worst tumbler ever. I can kind of tumble backward, but anything involving going foward ends with me flat on the ground or back where I started, lol. You're very fluid, though. I'm trying to pick things up from your video to help me in class. Haha, thanks for the vid.
I would like to suggest the breakfalling techniques for ukemi, which should be learned by 2 d or 1st kyu:ie the "kickout" breakfall, which is from a tenkan shomenuchi iriminage, and the breakfall from shihonage>> there are two in this category, breakfalling from a low shihonage, and of course, harder, would be from a high (standing) shihonage.
There's also the breakfall from koshinage, and out of jujinage. Breakfalls are to be differentiated from "high rolls" . Cheers!
I thought you'd do a highfall... but what you did do was really great. I haven't done all of them myself before... I want to try the side and to the back rolls. You do a great dolphin dive, too. The rolls where you're hugging yourself were interesting too, never seen those before.
thanks. yea, i need work on my highfalls - i reckon it's gonna take at least a year or so more before i can use it well consistently.
the rolls where i hug myself just simulates the scenario where my hands are out of action, either because they are injured or they are being held on (such as in the jujigarami technique). they are really helpful - helps you work on curling up into a ball that much more.
actually, i don't think there's a straight fall downwards from a standing posture in my dojo's syllabus as well - i was just giving a running example of how the ukemi basics progress from a static, low drop to a higher drop, to a more dynamic fall etc. in the vid.
the only reason i would do such a breakfall is if someone grabbed hold of one of my arms and i couldn't roll out of it.

Good stuff. It's always good to see how you can apply Aikido in the real world environment, and not just the dojo mats :)

yea, it's fun to know that your ukemi can save you out there... although i must admit i'm still a little wary of trying it out on concrete! ;)

well the rolls feel very smooth on concrete.
Just make sure there is no shards of glass!
that much I know :)

So you just drop yp your elbows from straight posture?
I was taught to squat as far as possible, then fall to my elbows.
