  • I was five when this happened and I lived near fadden pines. Luckily my house didn't get burnt down....but it was close to.

  • when this happened i was 5 i lived in gungahlin and my mum and dad were helping in the evacuation center then met many families that had lost family member but they luckily found most of them. One of the people they met had lost all there belongings and lost there are also in the fire. I stayed at my friends place with my 2 year old brother and we had packed our car with everything important to. My Auntie and Uncle lost their house as the lived in Duffy but they had all they needed to live.

  • My house wasn't affected by the fires, but i remember how scared i was, the sky was orange and we had the radio on all day and we were getting our house ready for the worst

  • i was 8, i live like 3 hours away from canberra and the smoke was so thick in the sky

  • I believe that 5 people were killed in the fires

  • @jmanenright

It was actually 4 people who lost their lives.

  • were is the rest of the vid you see 2 blokes from my cfa jump in the car down the high way up a bit further ??

  • "This video contains an audio track that has not been authorized by WMG"

Oh well I don't get to hear the music then, which means I have no idea what it was, so how could I possibly know that I might have purchased it WMG?

  • What was happening at the beginning of the movie there?

  • That was the fire approaching, it was coming over the Mt Stromlo area, burning the observatory and heading for the suburbs.

  • Oh right okay then. Like I could understand the situation, its just that they were yelling a lot in the car. There was a lot of ambers I guess. Thanks Tom.

  • I'm actually crying while I watch this. I was 12 years old, I had a ten year old sister to look after. We didn't know what was happening. Our house burnt down at 6:00 that night. We lost everything.

  • *hugs*

  • who will ever forget that fire.

i live on the coast and at 3:30pm it was like someone switched off the light.

canberra must have been hell on earth. thank god for the volunteers who risked them selves for others.

a special thank you to all.

  • it was like hell on earth. where my family and i lived at the time was safe, but even so, it was the most terrifying day of my young life. 3.30pm was like midnight, and the smell... it will always feel like yesterday.

but, thank goodness this is on YouTube. i needed to see this to move on from the scariest day of my life. :)

  • i can still remember them fires and since then i have always wanted to be a fire fighter now i am a fire fighter, i hope i never see anything as bad as this ever.. im not scared as such its the homes and propertys and most importantly the people that worry me... great video..

  • Dark and it was only about 1500hrs daylight!

  • 5 years on, still feels like it only happened yesterday! very scary stuff! I live in Holder, next to hard hit Duffy.

  • it was just scary how quickly it came, it went from clear, to smokey, do darkening skys, to approaching fires in just over an hour.
