He was a talented but hotheaded driver who was always sure he was in the right, and kept insulting everyone around him because of that. He calmed down in McLaren which is a more serious team, and his fire went away with this calm. Given time he could have become serious threat for world championships, but he was too immature to handle the situation, hence the mid-season escape to US racing where he could be hot-headed and crazy, without people hating him for that. Good for him I suppose.
