For the ref, it's hard to see the puck there. The post would be in the way, and if he was looking through the netting, then the goalie's blocker would be in the way. Whether or not you think it's a goal or not, they did a good job of going straight to review.

The person who had the best view of what actually happened was Mike Leggo, and he made the call from being in good position. Actually yes. It turns out the ref overturned the wash out call because he had a better angle and saw the puck cross the line. The washout was by a ref who lost sight of the puck. So when they contacted toronto for a review, the on ice call was considered goal. Toronto said they couldn't see the puck and didn't have conclusive evidence to overturn the play, so since the on ice call was goal, then they went with goal. Sucks they didn't explain this better till later.

it seems to me NHL officials rule in favor of Dallas most of the time. And when it matters most. Overtime or SO. Brett Hull's famous "no goal" in Buffalo in the triple overtime of Game Six of the Stanley Cup Final! And of course they changed the rule right after this happened so Dallas could justify their Stanly Cup victory... This year NHL officials disallowed Capitals absolutely legitimate goal right before the siren. so the caps lost....

SO, when they got on the horn with Toronto, the call on the ice was goal and there was no way to overturn it.

The on ice ruling was actually goal. the ref who called it off cause he lost sight of it, so he asked the other ref and he said it went in. So the call was no conclusive evidence and it went to the call of goal. There is an article on this actually from the NHL, after they checked the recordings and what not.
Yes cause he lost track of it. So he waved it off. Then when he talked to the other ref, that ref said he saw it go in. They then went and told the scoring table we have a goal, but toronto wanted to review it. After review they decided it was inconclusive. So the original call was upheld as a goal. Weird, I thought I explained that. Either way.

The replay at about 2:40 is misleading. You see from the other replays that the puck was definitely moving into the goal. At about 1:26 the replay they show is inconclusive at best. Given the speed of the puck and the position when it is seen last, I'd say it didn't go over. Judging on where Howard's glove was when he finally got it to push it out, it may have gone across the line, but probably didn't. Bad call, but the game meant nothing to both teams.

It wasn't the refs call. Once it goes to Toronto, it's the War Room's call.

@MrTwonton The ref beside the net called no-goal, but the other ref coming from center overruled him and called it a goal. The war-rooms call was inconclusive so the on ice call of "goal" that was called by the ref at center ice stood. That's the reason this play is so controversial.

it seems to me NHL officials rule in favor of Dallas most of the time. And when it matters most. Overtime or SO. Brett Hull's famous "no goal" in Buffalo in the triple overtime of Game Six of the Stanley Cup Final! And of course they changed the rule right after this happened so Dallas could justify their Stanly Cup victory... This year NHL officials disallowed Capitals absolutely legitimate goal right before the siren. so the caps lost....

At first glance I thought it was a goal. But the ref didn't, and a goal was not proved yet still given.

just so everyone knows the call on the ice is no goal.
after that the referee's on the ice have no further call on the status of the goal.
it is sent to the war room in toronto where officials then look at all the camera angles in super slow motion high def.
i suspect the people in toronto had an additional angle not shown to the public that clearly showed a good goal

@kanyeezy24 Toronto didn't have another angle. It was said after the game that the back ref who was Leggo convinced the ref who was on the line that it went in. Watch part 2 of this that's where they say how it was ruled on.

@kanyeezy24 Actually the call was reversed on the ice before they went to Toronto. The other referee and the two linesmen all had goal on the ice so they officiating crew reversed the call on the ice to a good goal.
SO, when they got on the horn with Toronto, the call on the ice was goal and there was no way to overturn it.
I'm not saying the officials got it right, but that's what happened.

@DLGFTW. hmm, it's too bad they don't just put plexiglass underneath the goal and goal line and put a camera underneath...or at the very least don't paint the ice underneath the goal and throw a camera down there, or even further just put a microchip inside the puck and have sensors on both goal posts which tell you if the puck fully crossed the line.

actually the reason it was called a goal was because there was inconclusive evidence. "But the call on the ice was no-goal!" You say. Ah that's where the refs got ya! Apparently the ref from the blue line had a better view than the ref 2 feet away from the goal and he called it a goal. So apparently that call overrules the call from the ref closer. (This was what was explained to Babcock)
Make sense now?... didn't think so. I don't wanna wear a tin foil hat, but stuff like this doesn't help

regardless of whether or not it crossed the line, no angle had evidence of thath. the on ice ruling is no goal. replay doesnt show otherwise... so why the hell is it a goal? thats just nhl reffing today...

The on ice ruling was actually goal. the ref who called it off cause he lost sight of it, so he asked the other ref and he said it went in. So the call was no conclusive evidence and it went to the call of goal. There is an article on this actually from the NHL, after they checked the recordings and what not.

Yes cause he lost track of it. So he waved it off. Then when he talked to the other ref, that ref said he saw it go in. They then went and told the scoring table we have a goal, but toronto wanted to review it. After review they decided it was inconclusive. So the original call was upheld as a goal. Weird, I thought I explained that. Either way.

Just because your closer doesn't mean you have a better view. See if you look, the glove is between his line of sight and the puck, the glove blocked his view, The ref from behind can see between his legs and see the puck the entire time as he places his glove over it.

For the official explanation, go about 3:25 into part 2 of this when Ken and Mickey get the word from the NHL.
But as for the video review, on the reverse angle look they show at 5:40, you can see the puck the whole way and I'd say that conclusively shows the puck did NOT cross the line.

1:31 1:32...you can see the puck clearly over the line...and I'm sure the tv crew knew it to...I love how they show it as howard hovers over the puck but then fast forwards it past this view the second time you see it. I could see the puck over and I'm think toronto saw the same thing which would explain way they called it a good goal

Even as a Blackhawks fan, this is just horrible. I may not like the Wings but Im all about fair calls. If the original call from the ref 2 feet away was no goal, then thats the call. Mike Leggo shouldnt be able to overturn it. This guy should be fired and banned from sports for the rest of his life.

this isnt the refs fault. the puck at live speed from his angle looked like it could have crossed the line and if they didnt go check the replay then they arent giving them a second chance to make the right call.If anything its the replay crew in Toronto's fault for saying thats conclusive

Toronto said there was no conclusive evidence that it was a goal, but Leggo overturned the other ref and called it a goal. This is one of the biggest abortions of a call Ive ever seen!

Actually i'm not a red wings fan, but this was a horrible mistake from the referee.
You could see, that the puck wasn't with the full volume over the line.
BUt in fact, the Red Wings had 6 Chnaces for a goal but didn't score once....

The replay at about 2:40 is misleading. You see from the other replays that the puck was definitely moving into the goal. At about 1:26 the replay they show is inconclusive at best. Given the speed of the puck and the position when it is seen last, I'd say it didn't go over. Judging on where Howard's glove was when he finally got it to push it out, it may have gone across the line, but probably didn't. Bad call, but the game meant nothing to both teams.
