I much preferred Jones on the front foot. He was an excellent counter-puncher but I never felt as though he looked safe going backwards in those straight lines. He's was much better in the center of the ring, turning his man.

There were openings that Jones should have taken. Tarver was 'for the taking' in this round. I think if Jones let his hands go, he would have gotten a TKO. He also could have TKO'd Tarver in the 11th & 12th.

Tarver beat him fair&square, but it may have been different had Roy stayed a light heavyweight. Ironically, Tarver slowed down after he gained weight for the Rocky Balboa movie

Jones was done the first time he fought Tarver.His last fight at LHW before moving up to HW was against Clinton Woods,and Jones looked amazing during that fight.Then when he went back down to LHW and fought Tarver he was a totally different fighter.Compare the Jones-Woods fight to the first Jones-Tarver fight,you will see Jones' skills weren't what they used to be.Still RJJR is one of the greatest,one of the best boxers ever.

I much preferred Jones on the front foot. He was an excellent counter-puncher but I never felt as though he looked safe going backwards in those straight lines. He's was much better in the center of the ring, turning his man.

He's was like a freestyled boxer... he had a better ability to anticipate body movements that most people and he could literally play with the other boxers because of that. Jones confidence is also a cause of his downfall or perhaps he lacked the true killer instinct. When he had Tarver on the ropes after the intitial body shot onslaught he let him recover instead of piling on more hard shots and possibly getting the ko. He did thesame in his last fight; after staggering his oponent, he stepped back, smiled and let him off the hook. Then he was promptly dispatched himself. Homlmes did the same against Spinks. Leonard and Tyson and knew how to finish.

There were openings that Jones should have taken. Tarver was 'for the taking' in this round. I think if Jones let his hands go, he would have gotten a TKO. He also could have TKO'd Tarver in the 11th & 12th.

He was better prepared for this fight than he was in their first fight which, if you closely without HBO's over-dramatized commentary, Roy pretty much controlled the entirety of without that much difficulty. @neilsdunn I really believe his conditioning started to suffer when he came down from Heavyweight. To me, making that jump in weight was his worst career decision. If you compare the toning of his muscles in this fight to his other light heavyweight bouts, before his move to heavyweight, you can see the difference.
Tarver beat him fair&square, but it may have been different had Roy stayed a light heavyweight. Ironically, Tarver slowed down after he gained weight for the Rocky Balboa movie

Sadly this was pretty much the only good round of the fight for Roy. The rest of the fight he didn't fight to win, only to not get knocked out. But he did show glimpses of the old Roy right here and you could tell that a prime Roy would have easily dismantled Tarver.
