I have been a piano technician and Steinway specialist since 1994, so I guess I am slightly prejudiced, but to me there are only two kinds of pianos...Steinways...and everything else.
Fabulous all around. I'd love to hear more of you playing this instrument. I bought David Rubinstein's CD of it on iTunes, and I'd have bought yours if there was one! There are plenty of standard 9-foots for those who want them; I think this instrument is fantastic, amazing. Thanks for sharing.
@Maxobillion... Smaller does not mean better either. David was not attempting to make a statement that bigger is superior - completely moot point on your part.
@aacmcc Not completely moot. Smaller is not better either. So fine, I rephrase my comparison to fit your line of thinking.
Bigger does not mean better. Would you rather cruise on the Queen Mary 2 or an oil tanker? That being said, smaller does not mean better either. Would you rather cruise on the Queen Mary 2 or a tugboat?
As far as piano goes, I don't care what size it is as long as attention to the action and the sound is paramount.
@aacmcc Y'all are both totally missing the real point here. If you have 22 foot ceilings, and the circular arc of your draperies, when tied back, is probably eighteen feet. The Tassels are the size of small Dogs. Well, you can imagine the dimensions of the Chandelier(s), the Mantel, the Drapery Cornices, the room's Crown Moulding assembly (almost always exceeding two feet)... To have a Piano long enough to properly ground the room visually, twelve feet is about right.
I don't know about this piano...It's really long and really loud.
If someone wants to pay 650k to have the biggest piano in the world than all the more power to them. But there are so many concert grands that cost between 100 and 200k and frankly sound far better than this. Steinway, Faz, Bluethner, Mason, Bosie, Bechstein...
They might not be 12 feet long but they don't need to be.
D's are 8'11 and 3/4 of an inch and they are perfect for just about every venue in the world. Only 130k!
I played this piano last year at the NAMM Show in Anaheim, and believe me, this piano is UNBELIEVABLE! It blows all the others out of the water. It has an incredible dynamic range. You can play things in the tenor range that would sound like mud on a Steinway D. Everyone that I spoke to at the show that played this piano agreed with me, including Paolo Fazioli! This recording certainly doesn't do it justice and unless you've played it for yourself you can't possibly make a comparison.
This makes my 9 foot grand look puny. But I would match the sound so far....let's hear some real big stuff on that baby! BTW who makes it? Keep growin' em!
This is the largest piano out there really... David's recent price was quoted at $650 grand.. Thanks for the nice comments - there's a possibility I'll throw a few pieces from the concert up. Messiaen Preludes 1-5, Michael Garson Homages to Ligeti and Messiaen, Scriabin Op. 33/1 and 37/3 with improvisations on each, Bill Evans Turn out the Stars, Clare Fischer Liebesleid.
One thing sure the bigger the harp in the piano the longer the strings,
and longer strings give more bass resonance & power.
Its amazing how the big concert grands boom out the sound when
played by an expert.
GooglFascists 3 weeks ago
@GooglFascists Then the Boesendorfer 290 Imperial should have the same lenght as this piano, mainly for C0 resonance purposes.

Why does this pianis (sic) need a 12-foot grand to make a miserable few inches of preclimactic sounds?

Mr. Steinway himself told ME that he thought this was the best piano ever made or would ever be made, so let's discuss the PERFORMANCE?

@wildeval I would love to hear a professional recording of this piano in a concert hall.

@aacmcc But actually, a good big grand piano is always better than a good small grand piano.

@Maxobillion referring to this piano as an oil tanker is very much off the mark.

Didn't Kawai make a 13' back in the 1980's. I think it was on tour, but only an experimental piano.

@LVB1770
No one does make a piano this big - apart from these people, and that's because it's totally unnecessary, too big to move, to expensive and too loud.
It's a huge $650 thousand dollar novelty.
