im not saying this is a main point for vista....but what was good about it having high requirements is that it finally made manufacturers ship computers with better graphics cards/specs.....i would prefer to have a resource intensive OS as it would make our technology advance faster as it is required.
It started with a deal with Intel, which had a bunch of shit-quality CPUs they wanted to get rid of. They couldn't run Vista at all. But by lowering the official requirement needs (the actual needs were still the same), MS solved that problem for Intel.
Only thing is, this is also to cheat customers, because it meant vista wouldn't run well, which MS knew, but did it anyways.
its just fancy visual effects which can be added on to any windows computer.....how does it make ubuntu a "better operating system" ? It hardly makes productivity any better
@xkflash 80% of the compiz plugins cannot be ported to Windows, however you are right in saying they are just pointless eyecandy (I don't run a CWM on any of my gnu/linux machines).
As for productivity, I think 10-second boots, multiple workspaces, and snappy UI responses put Gnome well ahead of "The Microsoft Genuine Windows Experience" (or whatever they're calling the BSOD these days) for now.
@xkflash I used Vista, before I went Linux. The total amount of time spent on useless crap like downloading updates, installing, closing down, AND installing again before shutting down completely then restarting installation of this "#%"¤% update again after I booted up... Its just not worth it. With all the other things that were so WRONG about windows, it was HORRIBLY slow and very unsable too, I found myself using more time on the OS than actual work.
@ytvoice1 The difference lies in the way Windows "do things". Updating is SLOW. Just one small update and you have to restart three times?
I never restart in Linux Mint, after an update? And it updates while I work?
Faster system, faster boot up, uses less memory, is far more stable and more user friendly, is more safe than Windows. And it found ALL my hardware during installation, which also, took lot LESS than Windows...
@ytvoice1 you (hex539 and ytvoice1) both sound like you
a) have hardly used windows vista
b) listen/believe rumours about windows products
c) have a system made about 7 years ago as you both complain about vista being "slow" and "resource hungry".
my computer is 2½ years old and was fairly cheap compared to what was around (just under $1000 AUD) and it runs smoothly to this day. rarely freezes. i'll give you the boot times are slow, but other than that there is no advantage in using linux
The computer is "vista ready", and it was built in.
No need to hide the truth, I know Microsoft lied about system requirements for Vista, and it, ts a known fact.
But the REALLY embarrasssing is, that Mint, which is free, is so much faster, so much more stable. On the excact same computer. That tells something about bloated MS-crap.
@ytvoice1 you guys...not only is that the most pathetic reason, as i hardly ever need to update or worry about updating (as most of the time it does it in the background)....but you don't NEED to update and you don't NEED to restart your computer straight away.....you can just turn it off when you usually do, and then start it when you usually do and its updated.
1. Vista has to restart EVERY update. But before it restarts, it make a first installation. Then it restarts, and a second installation. Then a restart again.
Damn, it was SHIT. The only thing it did was restarting. And the updates was in mb-size EVERY time. Because all their proograms are shit-bloated.
Vista sucks.
2. Linux Mint, which I use now, it downloads updates in the background for the whole system, not only the OS. Then it installs the updates in the background, and thats it.
@cloudownage666 to keep unrelated things separate, for example I don't want Spotify or Firefox to show up in my window lists when I'm coding, but it's handier (and faster) to have them readily available when I need them without having to resort to tray icons or launchers.
ps. not everyone runs with 4 workspaces (I use 6), it's just that all the ricers who make these videos never find the settings to change the number.

In case you don't know how to get the cube, this is one way to get it (that I have heard of): go to the Add/Remove Application place, search for "compiz" (a desktop-effects-program) and it should pop up there, then download and configure. Piece of cake ;)
@nintendofan102 true but I herd that uBuntu takes up too much MBR space so it uses a pointer. If I wanted to get rid of it I would have to repair my windows master boot record.
The only technical improvement in Vista was expelling unnecessary GDI (Graphic Device Interface) codes from ring-0 to ring-3 on the Intel CPU ring-protection architecture.
But those GDI codes were so spaghettied and thus not well isolated from kernel codes that a bunch of preemptions on ring-transition occurred during even a simple graphic drawing. This is why Vista works so slow.
if you wanna do cube this on ubuntu do start then z when you finishing dragging press enter then if you wanna spin it round click start and draging left or right

Yes, I have it running on a Pentium 4. I'm really a mac user (have been for the last 10 years) windoze makes me laugh it's so slow and childish. I ran across Fedora/Ubuntu about 3 months ago, when I needed an extra machine for the kids. I was so blown away by the speed, elegance & robustness of the system...
I've just sold my mac laptop and bought a netbook with Ubuntu 8.04 remix.
it shud be easy to take it off a mac, and on windows, if you make a dual boot then you need to download "Boot-Edit" and use it to get rid of ubuntu or any other linux.
I had windows 7 found it was hanging at times, so i moved to Ubuntu, i put XP on Ubuntu but in all fairness Ubuntu has it all and for free.. i am really more than impressed by it
if you are looking for overall perfection, uBuntu, if you have a very high end pc and want games too, then Win7, else normal pc's with games is Windows XP is the best.
nowadays, many games work on ubuntu.
BTW >> ubuntu is now 9.10, its new, better, faster, awesome. I am using it xP
Yeah, I installed Ubuntu to dual boot with Windows XP on my desktop computer. I had to do a chkdsk /f and reboot twice before resizing the hard disk since the Windows ntfs filesystem had a few defects. Other than that, it went smoothly, and I'm now using Linux as my primary operating system.
maybe hardware size (very good looking Mac-Pros.... might just buy one myself), but in terms of useability, my laptop running U9.04 is amazing. I set it up to look like a Mac on one account, and a Windows Vista on the other.
I do confess that most linux distro's look assugly.... very dry GUI's, but they are ultra-easy to edit to look great., Both my accounts are almost impossible to distiguish from the original, and I have EVERYTHING I want from Linux :)
cool !, however I still think that Mac has better looks and mouse control when it comes to window manager. well that's what I have found out by looking at friends' computers. I do not use mac or windows for last 6-7 years :)
Hell Yes, Im sitting here trying to make justice with my little cubedestop for vista but it just dont compare to the FREE shit you have with Linux. Also almost anything is offered in a Linux version now so no more compatibility issues.
Don't hate me for this but I'm not a fan of pointless eye candy. I want my desktop to look nice but things like wobbly windows and fade ins etc just make everything take longer, even if only by a fraction of a second. I don't like virtual desktops either. The only use I can think of would be if you were looking at porn and wanted to hide it from someone.
And that's why linux is so awesome. You get the snappiness that you prefer while someone else can have the flashy style that they prefer. It's freedom of choice.
por favor no saques el cobree...... todos podemos decir lo que somos pero no salgas a la calle gritando orgullosamente tu ignorancia al aire.........
Ya ves, siguele con tu DirectX10 y tus jueguitos 3D......

Install Compiz on Ubuntu and then setup which effects you want, what keys to use etc.
it uses openGL to render I think.

It's the way forward!

shut up there about windows
barnaulishe 2 years ago
if "windoze" was so "childish", why didnt you get that for your kids? macs are great, and so is windows.

Very good... I like that argument!

Coolness
I'm downloading Ubuntu onto my Mac xP can you take it out? I'm just wondering
Morningdew1435 2 years ago
it shud be easy to take it off a mac, and on windows, if you make a dual boot then you need to download "Boot-Edit" and use it to get rid of ubuntu or any other linux.
=D

hey,i am going to get a netbook, what is better ubuntu 8.04,windows 7 home premium, windows 7 starter,or windows xp home edition?
FrankieJames7 2 years ago
depends what it is for
Ubuntu is really cool, but if it's for work then stick with the common ones.
lemming124 2 years ago
I had windows 7 found it was hanging at times, so i moved to Ubuntu, i put XP on Ubuntu but in all fairness Ubuntu has it all and for free.. i am really more than impressed by it
celticpro 2 years ago
if you are looking for overall perfection, uBuntu, if you have a very high end pc and want games too, then Win7, else normal pc's with games is Windows XP is the best.
nowadays, many games work on ubuntu.
BTW >> ubuntu is now 9.10, its new, better, faster, awesome. I am using it xP

Why do all these video have to have bad porn music?
isegoria1 2 years ago 3
Yeah, I installed Ubuntu to dual boot with Windows XP on my desktop computer. I had to do a chkdsk /f and reboot twice before resizing the hard disk since the Windows ntfs filesystem had a few defects. Other than that, it went smoothly, and I'm now using Linux as my primary operating system.

maybe hardware size (very good looking Mac-Pros.... might just buy one myself), but in terms of useability, my laptop running U9.04 is amazing. I set it up to look like a Mac on one account, and a Windows Vista on the other.
I do confess that most linux distro's look assugly.... very dry GUI's, but they are ultra-easy to edit to look great., Both my accounts are almost impossible to distiguish from the original, and I have EVERYTHING I want from Linux :)
fiyahballz 2 years ago
cool !, however I still think that Mac has better looks and mouse control when it comes to window manager. well that's what I have found out by looking at friends' computers. I do not use mac or windows for last 6-7 years :)

fiyahballz 2 years ago
Hell Yes, Im sitting here trying to make justice with my little cubedestop for vista but it just dont compare to the FREE shit you have with Linux. Also almost anything is offered in a Linux version now so no more compatibility issues.

arnulforompido 2 years ago

Don't hate me for this but I'm not a fan of pointless eye candy. I want my desktop to look nice but things like wobbly windows and fade ins etc just make everything take longer, even if only by a fraction of a second. I don't like virtual desktops either. The only use I can think of would be if you were looking at porn and wanted to hide it from someone.
Long live Linux

And that's why linux is so awesome. You get the snappiness that you prefer while someone else can have the flashy style that they prefer. It's freedom of choice.

Cool effects! However, I suggest that you forget all this useless eye-candy and get a proper window manager like wmii or xmonad. :)

Para aquellos winderos No se si se han dado cuenta que los juegos son mas eficientes en linux que en windows y dan mas FPS
For those windows users. I don't know if you have noticed that games are more efficient in linux than in windows and it gives more Frames Per Second
