I don't know why, but in every playthrough of this game that I've done, Smorg's attacks and movements time perfectly with the music. Like, from 1:24 to 1:27, Smorg attacks. And the buildup to it is just so epic.

Originally there was an additional part to the chapter that involved the Shadow Sisters confronting Mario & Co. on the train and then summoning the Smorg. Lord only knows why they took it out for the final version of the game. ;__;

Well, the Shadow Sirens invoked the Smorgs to delay the train to Poshley Heights by lifting the train bridge in the Riverside Station. That didn´t work, so the Smorgs got on the train and kidnapped all people in it. So, the Sirens' plan was to make the train stop and get the Crystal Star before Mario, though failing.

@BlackRoy13 The X-Nauts created the Smorg from genetic experiments to slow Mario down. If you look in one of the lab rooms on their base on the moon, you can even see some floating around in some of the tanks. So actually, they do have something to do with the plot.
