@MadamePetrarca - I'm certain that you know that, for most Christians, Sunday is the Sabbath.
The bible says "Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work ...". It does not say which day from which to start counting. Many of us start working on Monday, so the seventh day is Sunday. If you start on Sunday and take your Sabbath on Sunday, that's fine. In 1945, five months before liberation, Eric Liddell died in a Japanese prison camp in China. He was in China for his missionary work. He won the 400 meters in 1924 because of his faith, and he gave his life in 1945 for the same reason. Whether you are a religious person or not (and I am not), his adherence to his principles is more than admirable, it's something to be emulated.
@thejuncopartner i totally agree brother im not a person who beleives but i agree with your sentiments totally !!and with your name i can presume your a clash fan as well as someone who is more clued up with something i think i know quite a lot about as my grandad was a chindit who fought the japs in ww2 in burma but he was a christian to his dying days and he took no pleasure out of killing japs !! it had to be done good v evil and good won and eric liddell and thosands like you i salute you
No, he didn't win because of his faith. He won because he was an incredible athlete who worked his tail off all his life. It's great that he believed in God, but God didn't have a thing to do with it. He said God made him fast, but it was his decision to use that gift.
He said during that last race" Where does the power come to see the race to the end? From WITHIN."
@teegilled I think you misunderstand me. You are right that he chose to use his gift. But he ran the 400 meters because he would not run the 100 meters. Contrary to the movie, he knew well ahead of time and was able to prepare. But, if not for his faith and his principled stance to keep that faith, he would not have chosen to decline to run the 100 meters and instead run the 400 meters. In that sense, he was on that 400 meters start line because of his faith. That is what I meant.
@teegilled Ok, sure, but you said "He won the 400 meters in 1924 because of his faith."
What you meant was he RACED the event because of his faith, but I still say he won because he was extremely talented, not because of God or Buddha or Muhammad or any other deity.
@teegilled If you mean to say that it was his BELIEF in god and not GOD himself that enabled him to win, you're right. His faith gave him discipline to stay true to his principles, which made him stronger spiritually and athletically. Just goes to show that religion isn't entirely a bad thing. It can sometimes be motivational. If I believe that God made me specifically for running, I'd run a hell of a lot harder than without that belief because I'd know that I was destined to run hard.
well, I was simply seeking to problematise your statement that Christians have free will. although i suppose there is some truth in it i thought it was conceptually a little flat and required some clarification. i agree with you in the sense that christians have the personal right over what to decide or think in any given situation. but what i thought your statement didn't acknowledge is that these thoughts, actions, and so forth, must align with biblical principles.
@koolfraser Granted, but sometimes, unfortunately, they don't. There's a very fine line too, in what is considered to align with biblical principles. Although, for myself, I don't consider Christianity a religion as much as I consider it faith. It's as I heard a man once say:
I am running marathons at age 65 and this movie motivates me to no end.It was a remarkable movie of a wonderful era.It is the quintessentail running movie. Thanks for posting.
One of the greatest shots in movie history is in this scene. You have to look hard but it's there. As Liddle makes the final turn they cut to Abrahams staring in wonderment. It's a great scene because it shows, ever so subtetly, that Abrahams knows in his heart of hearts that he could never, not in a million years, beaten Liddle. Liddle, as Shultz says, runs for something deeper than pride.
Just as the opening of the film shows the joy of running, the final shot shows the joy of faith.
the most reatrded thing in the world a man walk on waterm whales that swallow men whole and spir them out, I belive in supoerman, I was a christain all my life since age 5 with chariots of fire, i gave up a 5 star job to be a nerd pastor as long as i was married, found out jesus is fake, church run by mafia all about slavery and money. thier were 3 other christs before the jersleum chirst, we celbarate dec 25th becuase of the egyptian jesus christ, jresleaum was a copy cat,
@tazwildcat7 No, the most RETARDED thing in the world are sloths who can't spell and who are too fucking lazy to get a dictionary. Unsurprisingly, these same morons misrepresnt positions with which they disagree, such as Christianity. Fortunately for them, God forgives them, even when they don't deserve it.
Actually it wasn't that he didn't want to run on the sabbath it's that he didn't want to run on a Sunday. The "sabbath" is on Saturday. Just to clarify.
Does anybody know that 80's movie ( I thought it was Rudy at first) where there's two kids at summer camp or something and they have a race through the woods in the end?
I have a book my father in law gave me on the Paris Olympiad of 1924 and there are the pictures of these very same people staring out from time to me.
Scholz, Liddle, Abrahams and others all in black and white in their prime with the odd looking outfits of the era.
@Staymewithflagons salute stay...........how great is this line in this movie at its climax..." Jenny..I believe God made me for a purpose but He also made me FASSSSSSSTTTTTTTT...and when I run I feel His pleasure....I aint religious a LICK but that line crushes me...and then the music creshendos OMG brilliant
This movie doesn't go into what Eric did after he won. He returned to China, the land of his birth, and worked in a hospital during WW2. Eventually he sent his wife and children to Canada, where he planned to meet them after the war. When the Japanese closed in, Eric and the doctors at the hospital refused to abandon their patients. They were all interned in a camp, where Eric continued to minister to the sick and train Chinese athletes. He died of a brain tumor shortly before liberation.
"I believe God made me for a purpose and He made me fast!" This passage is so moving, especially the last part when he puts his head back (2.37) and runs as the real Eric Liddell ran. I think Ian Charleson did a great job there. But I don't think he portrayed the real Liddell's warmth and humanity, as attested in his biography, in everyday life.
I appreciate the testamony that Eric Liddel presented even back in the 1900's Olympics! He would share his Christian Faith with the world, and look where it led! The Gold Medal!
One thing inaccurate in this film is that Liddell knew about the scheduling of the 100m months before it took place and specifically trained in the 400m in order to win it.
In religion...is there such thing as free will, or does everything happen the way its suppose to. Like for example judas, did he choose to screw over jesus or was that what he was "programmed" to do? I have always been interested in this.
For whatever reason, Judas never had a choice. But think about this:
Most of what we do has no effect on the outcome of the day. This is true for most of mankind. For an extreme few they change the world.
When Judas betrayed Jesus it was simply an event. In the end it changed everything, religion, the Roman empire, how billions have lived their lives and how many wars have been fought?
If Judas had not betrayed Jesus would his image ever become so powerful and inspiring?
If there were no Judas there would be no crucifiction, and no one to die for our sins. Effectively, society would stay the same. But then of course, if you believe that Jesus had a reason, it would have been carried out eventually, just not by the Judas.
Judas Iscariott had serious problem. He tried to force the Lord's hand into doing what he wanted. The Jews wanted to drive the Romans out of Israel, and Judas tried this attempt by getting Christ to do it, however the Atonement had to be accomplished, and by this the apostles could not understand why at first of how allowed himself to be taken and crucified, but it was imperative to show forth God's righteousness, to show forth how human sinfully inclined nature is rightly related to death.
Judas had the problem of of being double minded, that is, having a foot in two camps, or having two bob, one going each way. If one plan didn't work out, then the back up of "plan B" was there, or so he thought. He stole money from the bag to purchase a field for himself, just in case things didn't work out for him, and Yet Christ knew all this, and he still gave Judas plenty of time and opportunity to stop and repent, and turn around, but he didn't. So at the judgment seta, he will die again
@YoungTeufelhunden (cont'd)...free will loosed from the moorings of God and Jesus is potentially morally beneficial but it can also be potentially harmful. christians have free will but there are very clear conditions and limits on that free will as determined by the religion itself.
Every man has free will, God doesn't want robots, for he takes pleasure in willing obedience of those who desire to do what is right in His eyes. Judas had the problem of double mindedness, i.e a foot in both camps. one in the world, and one in Christ, but unfortunately, no one can ever serve God that way at all whatsoever. He tried to force Christ's hand in driving out the Romans, but if that didn't work, then he could enjoy his field for which he stole the money for.
@nafan75 To fulfill the prophecy, one of Jesus' close friends had to betray Him. But Judas still had the free will to repent. He didn't. Peter also betrayed Jesus in a sense, and he repented and became the leader of the first church.
@AtarahDerek Completely agree with you, If feel that Judas made an ultimate sacrifice takeing the purest leap of faith. I think he was chosen by Jesus over the other deciples to do this act of unthinkable loyalty towards his master.
jamie..sorry to say but hate is not only a very powerful negative emotion...it is a mental disease...it instiagtes violence & destructions....hope u dont mean as u say
Well i like the fact that Eric Liddel was about as fine a man as you could be ,devout right up to end in a japanese prison camp just days short of liberation, dieing from a brain tumer.Other than that the only thing i have to add is the irish are short, you dont know how to season food, and enough on the potatoes, for the love of god five different types of potatoes at one meal is four too many.
Again, keep these irrelevant topics rolling in! (Oh and you're right, we can't season food. LOW BLOW DUDE!!! The whole food-seasoning issue is a very touchy subject, but man, that was harsh)
He didn't throw the paper away. He held it in his right hand.. but you're right, it doesn't show the paper in the middle of the race.. then it reappears at the end xD
I think God gave us everything in the world for us to succeed and be happy. Sometimes things like car accidents and someone killing you is not part of the plan. Its unfortunate but no matter what I think God made life an eternal cycle
BananaShakeizzle, success and happiness are not the most important thing. Accidents and death are not the worst thing either. Life and history is linear according to God's Word. Everything culminates to Jesus Christ. Trust in Him.
Amazing film, me parece el film de superacion y constancia mas increible jamas echo, sin duda alguna es la mejor pelicula deportiva de todos los tiempos y posiblemente este entre las 3 mejores peliculas de todos los tiempos.
Fantastic final scene in a wonderful movie! The looks on the faces of audience members starting at 2:42 is the best part -- they are in awe of the perfection they are witnessing. Eric Liddell was the best.
What are you on about? He didn't die for a purpose, he just died. If that's what you believe about death, you are a moron. Why do millions of children die of dissentry? Why do natural disasters kill hundreds of thousands? For a purpose? Grow up, you're like a child.
Read the scriptures, if you will. And look at historical events which taken place in history. God is definitely real, and one of the most signifiant ways in how he works and operates is through people.
People descended from the first human pair that wee made on this planet. Gen 2:7 and onwards. that's your answer.
@snappycruise Excuse me, I was conversing with someone who asked me a legitamate question. If you have no interest, then don't bother making comments which is of no value, epsecially about the Creator, as you have no idea what you are doing.
@ditdatdot I don't know about the man Eric Liddle himself, but I do know that the actor who played him in this film was.
From scripture, Homosexuality in eyes of God is an abomination, and is viewed upon as immoral, and contrary to nature. It is something that man has done, by choosing to do, and not from the Creator himself.
@ditdatdot Homosexuality is view upon as an abomination in the eyes of the Creator. Just read the historical record from Genesis Ch 19. In the book of Leviticus from Chapters 18 to 20, the nation of Israel were given diverse laws and ordinances to live by, as to not follow the immoral practices of the Land of Canaan during the exodus. The practice of Homosexuality carried the death penalty, as the practice itself was defiling influence, and not to be tolerated.
@ditdatdot If you are referring to Abraham being told to slay Isaac, that simply was a test of faith, as the angel stopped him from going ahead.
Homosexuality is contrary to what God designed with this creation, as the act is abominable and contrary to nature. In scripture, the woman was made for the man to be his help meet, and there are spirtual lessons associated with the blessing of marriage between a man and woman in order to form a family unit.
@yehudiadelphos You're absolutely right that God hates fags, but you are wrong that man has free will -- the only free will agent in the universe is God Almighty. He is sovereign over ALL things (God hated Esau before Esau was even born.) That doesn't change man's responsibility to OBEY God and and incur His blessings -- mankind's duty is the same: OBEY, but only God's elect WILL obey.
And also, God does NOT love everybody. Did He love Judas Iscariot, who He said should never have been born?
@HappyMayonnaise123 Man has free will indeed. God has no pleasure in robots.
Scriptural proof that man has free will. (I'm using the KJV) Exodus 25:2,Judges 5:2,9, 1 Chronicles 29:6,9. God only loves those who keeps his commandments, 1 John 5:3, Christ was giving Judas Iscariot opportunity, but Judas chose to betray him, even when Christ was fully awre of it
@yehudiadelphos To say that man is in control over his own destiny is to deny the sovereignty of God. The elect are indeed PREDESTINED for salvation. Look at John Chapter 10, look at the first five chapters of Ephesians. If God has determined that you are going to Hell, then you are going to Hell -- period. God has created vessels of wrath fitted for destruction, and vessels of mercy for salvation (Romans 9:13, Malachi 1:3). GOD controls the hearts of men.
@HappyMayonnaise123 God knows the end from the beginning, and yet he also perfectly just in his dealings with man. If you believe in predestination, then you are wrong there, because the person who is going to be condemened has no hope, wouldn't try, and that it would be a complete waste of time for God to even give them time and opportunity opportunity to repent and have the privilege to be reconciled back unto him, and have the hope of redemption out of out death
@HappyMayonnaise123 Have a look at 2 Peer 3:9 God is not willing that any should perish, but all should come to repenetance. In Acts 17:30-31, God has appointed the day in which he will judge the world in righteousness. This does speak of the Christ's return who will estblish his Ftaher's kingdom on earth, of which will be done whether man likes it or not. God manifestatin is what the overall plan and purpose of Gid is with this Creation.
@yehudiadelphos "God is not willing that any should perish" does NOT concern EVERY son and daughter of Adam -- it is in reference to the elect. He is NOT willing that they go to Hell, and therefore they DON'T -- all the rest DO! If He wasn't willing that ANY should perish, NONE would perish. And what's with this nonsense that God "foreknew" events, but didn't predestine anything to happen? See Romans 8:29-30 (See my next message).
@yehudiadelphos 2nd. See the first Chapter of Romans to see how filthy reprobates end up in their disgusting condition. It is because God has "given then up." It is not the work of man. God has given them up to a filthy lifestyle, whereby they cannot think straight about anything.
@HappyMayonnaise123 In romans Ch 1:22-32, yes it speaks about those who chose to be rebellious by refusing to serve God by not following his ways, as they wanted to indulge in the lusts of the flesh, and do what they wanted to do whatever appealed to their own interests. The folly and confusion of idolatry is what they invented, Read Isaiah 44:9-20, Psalm 115:1-8 and bythis defiled the, mselves defiled themselves to do abominable things.
@HappyMayonnaise123 The word reprobate means void of judgement, being unable to discern matters, i.e good and bad, right and wrong, truth or error.
In Rom 1:22-32, where it speaks about God giving those over to a reprobate mind, He simply let them go, to allow them do whatever they wanted, an dlook atthe result. They werre responsible for their own actions.
@HappyMayonnaise123 Concerning idolatry, in history the practice of Ashtoreth/Astarte/Ishtar, the goddess of fertility and war. A stautue image of a naked woman where people commited prostitution and orgies, and also sacrificed their children in front of it, of which the lower half of statue was stained with the blood of young children who were murdered for this. And yet all this was great party for those who indulged in it
@HappyMayonnaise123 Mal 1:3 does not speak about God controlling the hearts of men at all. It speaks about God passing judgement upon the Edomites who are Esau's descendants. The words, "laid his mountains and his heritage waste" speak of the political power and residence the Edomites had. The Edomites have been extinct since then, as they afflicted their brothers the Jews, however "the Edomite spirit" is still in the world today by anti semetism, and they too will perish. Ezekiel Ch 35
@yehudiadelphos The word "foreknew" is used in Scripture ONLY in reference to PERSONS, never towards events or actions. God foreknows EVERYTHING because He has decreed it to be. See also 2 Thess. 2:13, the concluding words being "Predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son." The elect's conformity to Christ is not the cause of God's foreknowledge, but the EFFECT of God's predestination of His elect. God is sovereign over ALL, and foreknows ALL because He has determined EVERYTHING.
@HappyMayonnaise123 God knew everything about this Creation before it even began, even with His son the Lord Jesus Christ. In 1 Peter 1:20, Christ was "fore ordained", that is- by being in the mind and purpose of God, before hand, as Christ was the representative example to all of the human race, as he was provided by God's grace and mercy in order for us to be reconciled and redeemed back unto Him.
GOD said...He who honors me..i will honor!

I like this video because
1.When we are confidence about God, God makes us confident.
2.All power lies within, mainly in our thinking.
3.Living for purpose.
All three are equally beautiful and important.

AtarahDerek 1 year ago
"I believe God made me for a purpose and He made me fast!" This passage is so moving, especially the last part when he puts his head back (2.37) and runs as the real Eric Liddell ran. I think Ian Charleson did a great job there. But I don't think he portrayed the real Liddell's warmth and humanity, as attested in his biography, in everyday life.

I have always been interested in this.
nafan75 2 years ago 2
For whatever reason, Judas never had a choice. But think about this:
Most of what we do has no effect on the outcome of the day. This is true for most of mankind. For an extreme few they change the world.
When Judas betrayed Jesus it was simply an event. In the end it changed everything, religion, the Roman empire, how billions have lived their lives and how many wars have been fought?
If Judas had not betrayed Jesus would his image ever become so powerful and inspiring?
IamChrisLang 2 years ago

So at the judgment seta, he will die again
yehudiadelphos 2 years ago
Yes there is a choice in religion, you choose to believe in God, and as a Christian you have free will.
YoungTeufelhunden 2 years ago 5
@YoungTeufelhunden free will insofar as you follow God's will; any departure from such is sin.
koolfraser 1 year ago
@koolfraser Would you care to expound?
YoungTeufelhunden 11 months ago
@YoungTeufelhunden (cont'd)...free will loosed from the moorings of God and Jesus is potentially morally beneficial but it can also be potentially harmful. christians have free will but there are very clear conditions and limits on that free will as determined by the religion itself.
koolfraser 11 months ago
@koolfraser Yeah, I see what you mean.

He tried to force Christ's hand in driving out the Romans, but if that didn't work, then he could enjoy his field for which he stole the money for.
yehudiadelphos 2 years ago
@nafan75 To fulfill the prophecy, one of Jesus' close friends had to betray Him. But Judas still had the free will to repent. He didn't. Peter also betrayed Jesus in a sense, and he repented and became the leader of the first church.
AtarahDerek 1 year ago

From scripture, Homosexuality in eyes of God is an abomination, and is viewed upon as immoral, and contrary to nature. It is something that man has done, by choosing to do, and not from the Creator himself.

yehudiadelphos 1 year ago
@ditdatdot Homosexuality is view upon as an abomination in the eyes of the Creator. Just read the historical record from Genesis Ch 19. In the book of Leviticus from Chapters 18 to 20, the nation of Israel were given diverse laws and ordinances to live by, as to not follow the immoral practices of the Land of Canaan during the exodus. The practice of Homosexuality carried the death penalty, as the practice itself was defiling influence, and not to be tolerated.
yehudiadelphos 1 year ago
@ditdatdot If you are referring to Abraham being told to slay Isaac, that simply was a test of faith, as the angel stopped him from going ahead.
Homosexuality is contrary to what God designed with this creation, as the act is abominable and contrary to nature. In scripture, the woman was made for the man to be his help meet, and there are spirtual lessons associated with the blessing of marriage between a man and woman in order to form a family unit.
yehudiadelphos 1 year ago
@yehudiadelphos You're absolutely right that God hates fags, but you are wrong that man has free will -- the only free will agent in the universe is God Almighty. He is sovereign over ALL things (God hated Esau before Esau was even born.) That doesn't change man's responsibility to OBEY God and and incur His blessings -- mankind's duty is the same: OBEY, but only God's elect WILL obey.
And also, God does NOT love everybody. Did He love Judas Iscariot, who He said should never have been born?
HappyMayonnaise123 1 year ago
@HappyMayonnaise123 Man has free will indeed. God has no pleasure in robots.
Scriptural proof that man has free will. (I'm using the KJV) Exodus 25:2,Judges 5:2,9, 1 Chronicles 29:6,9. God only loves those who keeps his commandments, 1 John 5:3, Christ was giving Judas Iscariot opportunity, but Judas chose to betray him, even when Christ was fully awre of it
yehudiadelphos 1 year ago
@yehudiadelphos To say that man is in control over his own destiny is to deny the sovereignty of God. The elect are indeed PREDESTINED for salvation. Look at John Chapter 10, look at the first five chapters of Ephesians. If God has determined that you are going to Hell, then you are going to Hell -- period. God has created vessels of wrath fitted for destruction, and vessels of mercy for salvation (Romans 9:13, Malachi 1:3). GOD controls the hearts of men.
HappyMayonnaise123 1 year ago
@HappyMayonnaise123 God knows the end from the beginning, and yet he also perfectly just in his dealings with man. If you believe in predestination, then you are wrong there, because the person who is going to be condemened has no hope, wouldn't try, and that it would be a complete waste of time for God to even give them time and opportunity opportunity to repent and have the privilege to be reconciled back unto him, and have the hope of redemption out of out death
yehudiadelphos 1 year ago
@HappyMayonnaise123 Have a look at 2 Peer 3:9 God is not willing that any should perish, but all should come to repenetance. In Acts 17:30-31, God has appointed the day in which he will judge the world in righteousness. This does speak of the Christ's return who will estblish his Ftaher's kingdom on earth, of which will be done whether man likes it or not. God manifestatin is what the overall plan and purpose of Gid is with this Creation.
yehudiadelphos 1 year ago

HappyMayonnaise123 1 year ago
@HappyMayonnaise123 In romans Ch 1:22-32, yes it speaks about those who chose to be rebellious by refusing to serve God by not following his ways, as they wanted to indulge in the lusts of the flesh, and do what they wanted to do whatever appealed to their own interests. The folly and confusion of idolatry is what they invented, Read Isaiah 44:9-20, Psalm 115:1-8 and bythis defiled the, mselves defiled themselves to do abominable things.
yehudiadelphos 1 year ago
@HappyMayonnaise123 The word reprobate means void of judgement, being unable to discern matters, i.e good and bad, right and wrong, truth or error.
In Rom 1:22-32, where it speaks about God giving those over to a reprobate mind, He simply let them go, to allow them do whatever they wanted, an dlook atthe result. They werre responsible for their own actions.
yehudiadelphos 1 year ago
@HappyMayonnaise123 Concerning idolatry, in history the practice of Ashtoreth/Astarte/Ishtar, the goddess of fertility and war. A stautue image of a naked woman where people commited prostitution and orgies, and also sacrificed their children in front of it, of which the lower half of statue was stained with the blood of young children who were murdered for this. And yet all this was great party for those who indulged in it
yehudiadelphos 1 year ago
@HappyMayonnaise123 Mal 1:3 does not speak about God controlling the hearts of men at all. It speaks about God passing judgement upon the Edomites who are Esau's descendants. The words, "laid his mountains and his heritage waste" speak of the political power and residence the Edomites had. The Edomites have been extinct since then, as they afflicted their brothers the Jews, however "the Edomite spirit" is still in the world today by anti semetism, and they too will perish. Ezekiel Ch 35
yehudiadelphos 1 year ago
@yehudiadelphos The word "foreknew" is used in Scripture ONLY in reference to PERSONS, never towards events or actions. God foreknows EVERYTHING because He has decreed it to be. See also 2 Thess. 2:13, the concluding words being "Predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son." The elect's conformity to Christ is not the cause of God's foreknowledge, but the EFFECT of God's predestination of His elect. God is sovereign over ALL, and foreknows ALL because He has determined EVERYTHING.
HappyMayonnaise123 1 year ago
@HappyMayonnaise123 God knew everything about this Creation before it even began, even with His son the Lord Jesus Christ. In 1 Peter 1:20, Christ was "fore ordained", that is- by being in the mind and purpose of God, before hand, as Christ was the representative example to all of the human race, as he was provided by God's grace and mercy in order for us to be reconciled and redeemed back unto Him.
