@megsypu i do believe the difference regarding what appears semi expert and pro is little these days. d7000 is perhaps all we all need. go to... freedslr . co m remove spaces and get an opportunity to win completely new Nikon D7000
@Jayramjiki123 Either camera will be fine for a beginner. If you want to discuss this in more detail it would be better to do so on the PhotographyREVIEW forums.
@Jayramjiki123 The D3100 is newer and has better image quality and video features. That said, the D5000 is still a great camera and I still recommend it - especially if buying the D5000 means you have more money for a better lens.
@Kiljan137 Not being much of a filmmaker, I hesitate to make recommendations. The D5000 is certainly capable of capturing good video, although the 720p resolution is a limitation. Right now the most popular video DSLRs are made by Canon. You might be better off posting a question on the PhotographyREVIEW Digital Video forum.
@biped19 Yes, the feel and build is pretty comparable to the Canon Digital Rebel cameras. I took the D5000 mountain biking a few times while I was testing it and the small size and low weight made it very comfortable in my hydration pack.
@pomssi1 Can't blame the white balance on the camera. That was my fault. I left it on auto white balance when it should have been set for tungsten :-)
@123miguelp Oh yeah - image stabilized lenses like Nikon's VR lenses make a big difference if you're shooting at slow shutter speeds. I can't post the link here but if you search PhotographyREVIEW we have a very good article on image stabilization.
i'm just a beginner and my parents are going to buy this very cool stuff as a present for my birthday! i am so much excited as he opens the box as if i am the one opening it.. i can't wait to open my own nikon D5000!.. ^_^
which do you think is better, nikon D5000 or canon 500D?
@camz25 Never think about "what's better" just... THINK or Decide what's the purpose or use you'll give to the cam. d5000 would be so much exceeding for some people, d5000 would not be good enough for some other activities.
@Yukino82 I don't remember for sure but I think I used a Canon EOS 5D Mark II for this video. Keep in mind that processing has a lot to do with the final quality. too. Even the best quality original will look like crap if you don't process it right.
@curtismichael14 They're very different and that's going to be a personal decision. The Olympus costs a lot less and offers a lot of the performance of the D5000. The D5000 will be better in low light and for action.
@curtismichael14 If filming is your thing, then I would go with the Olympus and buy the EVF because it makes handheld video better. The E-PL1 is my fave cam for video right now.
@PhotographyREVIEW ok thank you so much :) i'v been trying to get a professionals perspective on this, i have been looking for a camera for months, so thank you very much :)
@Quagmire88 I don't even know what that is. I love Slayer, bacon, mountain biking, skiing and taking pictures. Is that what the Dharma Initiative is about? :-D
@pierrerichard7777 I really can't remember. I have a lot of cameras come through and I usually shoot these videos with one of the review cameras I have. It might have been the Canon EOS 5D Mk II. Whatever it was, I obviously forgot to set the white balance.
@pierrerichard7777 No problem. For what it's worth, I've found all of the current HD DSLRs and Micro Four Thirds cameras are capable of excellent video if you shoot it right and process it well. The processing is key. If you don't do it right, the final video can look terrible. My first 5D Mk II video was totally mushy and it wasn't the camera's fault.
Personally, I'm a Canon owner. But I like the image quality of the Nikons better right now. And I love the D5000's tilt/swivel LCD. Once you use one, it's hard to live without it.
Yes. I don't always get them back quite on time, though :-) They do all get returned, though. If I really want something for myself I still have to buy it, just like everyone else. I do get to a little more hands-on time for testing, though :-)
@pbellini19 lol AF is autofocus and it has a built in motor to focus , and VR is vibration reduction and it's important to keep it in a lens , well both features are...
I'm sorry, I can't remember for sure which camera I used to make this video. I have a lot of cameras come through and sometimes I use them to make these box opening videos. If I remember right, I think I may have used the Canon EOS 5D Mark II for this one.
I think this is a very good beginner DSLR. It's not too expensive, easy to use and it leaves tons of room to grow. For more details read my pro review. There's a link for it in the description next to the video.
Not at all. The main reason is that it's a digital SLR with a much larger sensor. A larger sensor means that the actual pixels are larger, and that means significant;y less noise. This would actually be the case with any digital SLR.
The auto focus is great for an entry-level DSLR and better than any compact camera. You should read my finished D5000 review on the site for more info :-)
I really enjoyed your unboxing and review! Very informative! I learned a few things that I didn't know before. I've been keeping my eyes on this one and still doing research but so far it looks pretty promising! =)

Interesting spin on D5000 vs 620-E Flip Screen. I've held the D5000... love the grip. Like the Menu's. Much better ISO performance. However the size/weight, flip screen, and kit lens of the Olympus (not to mention price) have me leaning 620-E. You have a 530.
